Firing Coaches

I am a long time Sac State supporter. I support more than just football and loved the sport programs here. I must say that I have never posted on this board because I try to refrain from giving opinions that do not have any meat to them. I will no longer be supporting any of the programs. To see how they treated JO absolutely makes me sick. They promised him that his job was secure and that he was a go for the next season. They asked him to make a long term commitment and he gave everything to that program. This is just the wrong way to do BUSINESS. You do not want all you coaches second guessing every move they make because Sperbeck might whack them if they do not see eye to eye. I know that there was some turmoil in the program but JO was not the cause and definately willing to check his opinion at the door and do what was best for the program. I must say that I do not wish ill on any of the other programs but I hope that football fails miserably and both Sperbeck and Boise Boy get booted.

Liar, you are not a Hornet supporter!

Booooooooo YOU!!!!!

Coach Biaz and Coach O are great coaches and will land on their feet because they are talented and respected from the East Coast to West Coast. As a former player at UNLV and Sacramento State (1 year) I have never felt so sick to my stomach about the changes that have occurred the last week. I created a lot of problems for the program by 1 poor decision I made during a football game at Montana (something I will always regret and feel guilty about when reflecting on my senior season at Sacramento State.) I immediately apologized to each and every coach the following week because I knew that I made a selfish decision that made the entire program look bad.

What I can tell you about my experiences from working with Coach Osterhout and Coach Biaz is that they made me want to become a better Student-Athlete. One time Coach Osterhout caught me late to a class and noted that on time was late and only early was on time. I learned to be early and as a result I received an A+ in the class because I sure as hell did not what to let him or the program down. I learned early that Coach Biaz and Coach O caught everything and anything less than your best effort was not acceptable. I led the team in hustle violations in the Spring and was starting to doubt my abilities because I was not very good considering I was previously a TE converted to Defensive End. I finally learned the Hornet way by the end of spring ball and by Fall camp 4 days into double days I noted to the trainers that I had not slept in 4 days because I was having troubles sleeping at night because my mouth was watering all night and I was visualizing myself making plays and beating the offensive tackle in front of me and sacking the quarterback. Coach Biaz and Coach O could flat out coach and was nothing I experienced at UNLV besides my 1st TE Coach. I know they can coach because I was a terrible defensive end in Spring Ball and became a better player because of them. I would have ended my career a mediocre player if it were not for either of them and this is something I will always thank them for. The great thing about football is that there is no bs involved it is either beat the man in front of you or lose and if you lose get back up and try again. It was an emotional weekend for me and I can't even imagine how Coach Biaz and Coach O felt. A wise woman once told me that it is normal to express your emotions and okay to be pissed off, sad, but eventually you have to turn your stress into something positive that works.

I would like to wish both coaches the best and thank them for dedicating their lives to the Student-Athletes at Sacramento State. I would also like to wish the program the best. I am also greatful that when I ran the last leg of the CIM Sunday, when I was obvoiusly still upset about the firing, that I did not see Wanless or Sperbeck in front or near Sacramento State because I probably would have punched them both in the nose. A wise woman once told me that it is normal to express your emotions. Thank you for reading this long winded post. Sacramento State has been an important program to my family and that I am grateful but would not be truthful if I did not exress my disappointment and bad taste in my mouth...One day I will get mouthwash just probably won't be green or gold for sometime.

To say I am not a supporter is ridiculous. You do not know how many Sac State sporting events I have gone to. This is exactly why I do not like message boards. The people that sit on the outside looking in say things that they can not prove. They slander names and families because it is not known who says the things they say.

There isnt one established poster on these boards that has "slandered" any one of the coaches that were fired or their families. Simply disagreeing or not taking some new posters word for something does not constitute slander.

I highly recommend establishing some credibility before making accusations or blanket statements. Simply saying "I'm a supporter" does not establish credibility. Credibility is established with specifics that can be substantiated with facts i.e. quotes or statistics, something like that.

Giving ones opinion is fine, it's even encouraged, but don't expect the people here to take your word for it, whatever it is your talking about at the time. People are going to question you, they are going to disagree, it's just how it is.

The people on this board consider themselves to be HUGE Sacramento State Hornet fans/supporters, that's why we congregate here, to talk about a university and its programs that mean so much to us. This isnt a typical message board, one rarely here's any negativity and attacks are not tolerated. Try to find another board that discusses college sports that is as civilized as this one and I'm sure you'll find that this board is very exceptional.

By the way, welcome to the board.

I believe this is Brad Osterhout, Jon's brother...He played at UNLV and transferred to Sac State and was involved in the Pam incident.

If it's really you, please convey to your brother and the rest of the family how sad we are that Jon was let go. The Osterhouts are synonymous with Sac State football and you guys will ALWAYS be Hornets for life. It saddens me, but I understand that you guys need space from the program. Jon will land on his feet somewhere and will eventually be a head coach...

All of you will always be welcome in the family.

I echo your sentiments PH. Whatever happens Johnny O will have no problem landing on his feet.

We are Hornets for Life and will always have a connection, matter of fact my family loves SAC so much when my wife graduated from UC Davis Medical School (also career saves leader at UC Davis Womens Soccer) my Dad bought her a Sweatshirt that said SAC St. Medical School.

NICE! You are always welcome here.

By the way, I thought the PAM move at the time was brilliant. I know it's not PC to say, but you just happened to get caught. I loved it...

I was in high school at the time and when I saw Sac State on ESPN for the PAM incident, it actually got me interested in the school. I even had conversations with Mooshagian in 2003 before I decided to get my knee repaired and call it a career. While I still ended up attending Sac State, I honestly knew nothing about the athletics program until the incident.

6 years later, I have two degrees and nothing but good things to say about my experience. So thanks!

Um, I dont think any slander has been directed at anyone. I think every poster on this board has said good things about the people that were let go. As I have said, both will land on their feet and be HC's at some level in the very near future.

If you do anything, support the program more. If the program improves it shows that the coaches who were let go helped build a winning program and foundation, they left their legacy. If the program declines then it validates that what they gave didnt build a strong enough foundation from which to grow.

glad2b-ahornet has very insightful comments that no one should dismiss. Take the time to READ what he has to say. Most of the posts over the years have been from the outside looking in and his posts are a thoughtful look at the program from the inside that resonate what I've heard over the few years I've been a hornets fan.

It's very curious that these radical coaching changes have happened on the defensive side of the ball, admittedly the area that showed the most improvement from 2009 to 2010. Whereas the offense, so far, is still stuck in the stone age of Sperbeck running the show with with no competent help; no real coordinator, no help from the booth, and no advisors that second guess him during a game. Regardless of the talent on the team and the exceptional recruiting of the past couple years, the team can always be out coached until Sperbeck institutes a real D1 system. I really think he missed the mark on his reorganization I hope that the recovery of the damage done is repaired quickly. The players deserve something better that what happened this week.

HHD, I can't express how sad I feel for you and your family. Your were a foundation of the Hornet family and I felt honored to have come to know you thru your posts. I always held your posts in the highest regard. Be well.

GO HORNETS

Brad, your dad, you and your brother rock!! Hornets forever!!!

Newfan, do you really think the Offense is that big of an issue?

You say that "the offense is still stuck in the stone age" and slight Sperbeck for being his own OC (up 'til now), but do you realize we were 13th in the nation in scoring offense out of 125 FCS level schools with 32 PPG?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it...

Sure we sometimes get frustrated with the occasional ill-timed fourth down attempt of barrage of WR screens, or questionable trick plays, but hell, it's hard to argue with the results...

And its better than off tackle right, off tackle left every other play. I dont think Chris Ault has an OC, he is his own man. And they are 12-1, pretty good.

KADEEZY-- I agree with you. This team was well balanced run/pass and put up 32 PPG without the services of four key players at skilled positions. We can move the football against anyone! NEWFAN, we DO have coaches in the booth as well as competent coaches on the sidelines to advise Sperbeck. I'm not sure what a D1 sysem is? But I know that at this level, 1-AA, we have less assistant coaches than at the 1-A level and are limited to paying these coaches to the tune of about 1/3 of what they would make at 1-A. These coaches have to handle multipe responsibilities and duties that are not required at the next level. The hours these guys put in are unbelievable!

Or going for it on fourth down in field goal range. Sometimes it works out, such as the Davis game with the first touchdown. But other times it doesnt, such as the EWU game going for it twice on fourth down in the first half. I feel that we should have been taking the points, especially in the first half of a game. I believe we were only down by at the most 14 points at the point that we could have kicked.

...... questionable playcalling as well as decision making

with regards to the offense

the numbers were a bit scewed. taking nothing away from the offense the statistics were affected by things such as a 61 or whatever point outing vs montana state 7 of the 17 points vs. stanford against their 2's and 3's. these are just a few. dont get me wrong points are points and win ball games but with the likes of the defense giving the offense so many short fields this year to work with we sure came out with far two many field goals rather than td's. For example the montana game. Also not taking points a few times and going for it cost us (i.e. ewu) Either way i do thing the offense can definitely improve especially with all the talent returning. i heard we might be movin to more 4 wide spread with the speed of fleming and the 4 vertical threat wrs (deadder, reed, hendershott, norrise) i think that would be a deadly combination.
