Football Dilema

Okay, here's one for you. We all know that Jay will have to pull the trigger at the end of the season. My question is this: Does he show as little respect for Scott as he did for Kay and do it a week after the season? Or does he wait a while, and make it look like he really agonized over the decision?

I have some buddies that are college coaches and their prediction was this:
Joe Glenn, A.D.
Marty English, Head Coach
Sonny Lubick, D.C. ( What the hell...he won a Natl. Championship at Miami as their D.C.!) :D

Sounds good to me.

Give him his walking papers right after the last game of the season.

Cabral isn't a bad idea. He's probably itching to get as far away from C.U. as possible. Especially after tonights Texas game.

If he's smart, he's gotta do it soon after the season.  Recruiting starts day 1 after the season.
That's probably a pretty good recruiting tool." Son, I can promise you one thing...Scott Downing will NOT be the head coach if you come here."

At first I'll agree it was a talent issue when Downing and staff took over. Now? Not so much. We have the talent to compete, should've beat NAU, PSU, even EWU. Now it comes down to coaching. Like when you run 3 consecutive pass plays when you're at the 2 yard line, and you have a running back (Harris) that could probably pound it in. Then you kick a field goal that made no difference what so ever. The list goes on. Downing does seem like a good guy, but this job wasn't for him. He probably should just stick to being a recruiting coordinator, that seems to be his strength.

I guess that's the bottom line. He has brought in some really good talent and we're not using them to their best abilities.

I think you have to also look at what happens late in games. It's one thing to play even in the first three quarters but it's in the fourth when the better coached and prepared team rises to the top. So is it any coincidence week after week we blow it in the end and then read the same exact quotes"we have to come back on Monday and get started again." Seriously, he says that after every game, where's the fire?

That bullshit platitude isn't cutting it!!!!

I think they should anounce his Fireing before the season is up and let him finish off the season, like what happened last year at Washington with TW. I would hope for those of you who have been saying for a couple years now that we need to keep Downing, see the light. We need someone who can change the culture an UNC.

Living in Wa state, I have seen first hand what can happen when you have a coach that is a nice guy, brings in nice kids and a and has few good players, but does not have a "culture" of winning. UW has very good players, had a 100% coaching staff turnover, and get this the new coaching staff MADE THE KIDS BELIEVE THAT THEY CAN WIN! Sure they are only 3-3 but that have had I think, the 3rd toughest schedule thus far in the country.

We have the history ant UNC, the kids know that, but they are stuck in the mud. They are competitive, we all know they want to win, but when it comes down to crunch time in games, they don't know how to win. Another example of changing the culture of a program, though not to this level, is Durango HS. Last year they were 0-10. They brought in a new coach, Greg Wyatt the former QB from N. Arizona, and he changed the culure. The first thing he did was thell the kids they were going to win and instiduted daily summer workouts. The kids comented that they had never worked out in the summer before. the result so far? 6-0.Change the culture, teach the kids how to WIN. Once they believe they can win, they will.

I was talking to a defensive coach from Washington State University the other day at the school where I coach, and when he found out that I had gone to UNC, his first coment to me was, "That place is nice. UNC has the best facilities in the Big Sky. With the brand new field turf practice facilities, a nice stadium, they should be able to recruite really well."

Hinrichs needs to announce the Fireing of Downing and Co. before the season ends. It is past the point of trying to "turn this battleship around" (quote from Hinrichs during the national broadcast of the soccer game against Wyoming). We need to abandon ship, and start (all the way) over. If this staff is brought back, then Hinrichs needs to be fired too.

I say fire Downing and the offensive coordinator today and just have a position coach step up and take the head job for the rest of the season. Then go find a new head coach at the end of the season that has proved success either being a head coach, offensive coordinator or defensive coordinator.

If we could find a coach that relates to the players like Downing (From what I know, Downing is very well liked by the players) and knows the depth of the game like Dalton, it would be great.

This would be my preference also. I would even be ok with it if they announce it now and let Downing finish out the string. I think the longer the job is open the better as that allows more candidates to throw their hat in the ring.

Having met him, Brian Cabral would be a great idea. However, UNC would have to wait on CU making a decision on what to do with Dan Hawkins (Yes, he is in trouble....Dont believe everything you read) Why? Cabral would be less of an expense for CU's athletic department (Hawkins buyout will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 2.5 million when he survives the season; hiring Cabral as a permanent HC would save a ton of money as they wouldnt have to completely clean house) than hiring say Charlie Strong, and he's what everybody over there wants (Somebody who is connected with the program--hes been at CU 19 years and LOVES the program and will take them back to what had them winning 8 and 9 games consistently---smashmouth football). UNC can get Cabral---they'd just have to wait on what CU does.

Cabral applied for the job and was interviewed after Dalton was fired. I wouldn't mind him here, but you'll get guys like Ursa who wants someone with head coaching experience. Cabral isn't even a D Coordinator.

While I want a guy with coaching experience, I'd take Cabral. Personally, I just want to have Hinrichs call Dalton, apologize, and give him his job back. Since we all know that isn't going to happen, I'll take a guy with a little fire in his gut. I'm sick of the "Gosh, golly gee..." attitude that Downing brought with him.

Beardown---CU was also changing coaches that year as well.......My point is this: If Hawkins stays, I guarantee Cabral will get a legit shot at this job. As a student here and having parents who are season ticket holders in Boulder, I'd be ecstatic with Cabral here. He's a great coach and a great man, and he'd do wonders for this football program. If I were Hinrichs, Brian Cabral would be my first call if hes available. That was my point.
