Gameday Thread: Week 1 EWU 36 vs. Tennessee St 29

GT's been about 80% to the good despite occasional lack of accuracy on w i d e open receivers. OL is playing very well. Still would run the ball more as TSU just looks gassed already on D. Pound them into submission. It's hard on a back to just come in for a play or two. Let's get Jackson going and let the OL have some fun

Halftime thoughts:

The good:

GT has exceeded my expectations in this game. He’s made (mostly) good decisions, taken care of the ball, and been accurate on most of his throws. He’s been good on the run as well. Despite not having a ton of live reps under his belt he looks like a veteran Big Sky WB

O-line has looked solid.

Receivers - only a few dropped balls and lots of different players with watches.

Special teams looks much improved. Solid punting, kickoffs, and coverages for the most part. Yes we had the missed XP but frankly it looked like he just slipped on the wet turf.

+1 on TO margin.

The bad:

Way too many big plays surrendered by the D. The first quarter in particular was terrible with plays way out of position on several plays. They did seem to settle in some in the second quarter though.

At least one trip into the red zone with no points. I guess we missed a FG as well so maybe kicking is not as improved as I previously mentioned.

Tackling.

LB’s look slow to the point of attack. I figured that position would be a weakness this year. You can tell there are young players in there.

I think if we’re able to open up a 2-3 TD lead we’ll see just that. I agree, their D line was looking really gassed in the 2nd quarter.

I will add that the receivers are getting very good separation. Wide open a lot of the time.

Roberson is clearly the big play receiver on this year's roster. I'm interested in seeing who else can put up some numbers to complement him. Chism is a reliable option in the slot position but not sure he has the breakaway speed to stretch the field. He's more of a shifty guy with good hands.
