GDT: Semifinal Game YSU v EWU

No way they put 39 on us. Absolutely no way.

Right. Guy is out of his mind. Here are the playoff stats and Eastern was 3rd in defense after one game. Will be number one once NCAA updates. Understand YSU can run the ball, but our DL wasn't even mentioned in the article and they are playing lights out 2 or 3 deep. Not ready to make a prediction yet; but no way anyone scores 39 on us at this point.

This is also the publication that selected Keeler as Coach of the Year, and Briscoe as offensive MVP. Just sayin.

Yep. OK with them picking against the Eags at home playing superlative football :-)

I'm predicting another blowout.

YSU had a nice draw to get where they are and they will be a formidable team but I think we run away with this one. It will be cold again, really cold, but the playing surface should be fine. No snow or moisture expected. We have an advantage in skill positions and if we get up early it will be lights out early on. YSU will need to control the clock and run the ball down our throats. We have struggled with these types of teams in the past when they have a mobile QB who can take the ball and run, but it doesn't appear YSU does. We actuall do welly against running teams that don't have a mobile QB. I think we get stops early, we put points up early, and YSU has to change plans and its ineffective. I see a 20 point win coming...

I love your optimism! I sure hope you're right!

Here's a couple of negative trends we need to overcome:

We have never won a playoff semifinal on a Saturday. The Villanova game was played on a Friday.

This game is dangerously similar to the 1997 game, when we were playing great heading into the semi with Youngstown. And for whatever reason, we just played terrible that game.

We have a terrible record against the MVC; we are 6 games below .500. No other conference has given us such problems.

Incidentally, we are winless against the SoCon, although that is misleading. We've only played one SoCon team- Appalachian State- and they aren't in that conference now. Doesn't it seem strange that we only have one game in all these years against SoCon teams?

Yeah...but the 1997 team didn't have Beau FUCKING Baldwin!

We haven't done horrible against the MVFC in the playoffs recently. We knocked off NDSU in 2010, SDSU in 2012 and ISU in 2013. We also played one of the worst games in our history against ISU in 2014 (I still get sick thinking about that game).

Wofford only threw three passes against YSU last week and two of them were in the 2nd OT, they completed ZERO passes last week. YSU will be going up against a completely different animal this week, I think Gubrud has a monster game and I think KB breaks out for a huge playoff performance as they will double Kupp and help on Hill...

We win big...

We win big... Gotta love it. This is a long way from 1997 for sure. Red field, Coach B et. al., depth and on and on. YSU is a complete football team and like every other team Eastern faces, will give their best shot. This team has accepted that challenge from each opponent and has learned how to withstand the early flurry and then deliver the body blows to clinch victory.

Just listened to coach Pelini on their local radio show. What a condescending d**k. Pretty much dissed Eastern, Kupp, and the Big Sky. Radio guys asked Pelini if he thought Eastern has seen a team as physical as YSU this year. Pelini basically said no, and that the Eagles are a finesse team. Man, were these guys confident. I'd love to see #3 in their backfield all day. They didn't even mention their suspensions.

Good, let them be over confident.

Heard the show as well. Pelini is an ass. Spoke with a big time Nebraska fan this past week and they despised him and his antics. His "punch in the mouth" comments, although coach speak; came across in a condescending manner as you pointed out. The Eag's have taken many such punches and then returned them as body blows. Expect the same this coming week.

Gotta admit he can sure dress.

YSU fan here and I want to compliment you guys on a great team. I watched the Richmond game and you definitely have all aspects of the game covered. As far a Pelini and his comments - I was at the show and attend most of them. He says the same thing each week about every team. We want to play Pelini Bingo when he talks - because we know exactly what he is going to say. I would not take the comment as offensive - I honestly think he has not watched much film on Eastern and doesn't exactly what Kupp has done. As far as the toughness of EWU...He is a down to business coach and is not impressed or intimidated by many things when it comes to football. He is a man of few words when it comes to the press, radio and news. He is not going to give accolades to anyone - even his own players. That is not his style. He comes from this town and we have had our series of misfortunes and devastating economics and the Stoops brothers and him are from that mold. They played football for Ron Stoops Sr. at the same high school. Bob, Mike and Mark have all made their mark on college football and Bo is cut from the same mold. As a matter of fact, Ron Stoops Jr. is our special teams coach. We are a town that has been through the ringer and he represents that spirit. So as far as toughness - people from Youngstown think anyone not from here cannot be nearly as tough as us. Just the way it is and the culture that we grew up in. The rustbelt created a sense of toughness that is almost arrogant at times.

As far as the suspensions - I don't think they wanted to bring that up in light of the Wofford game and EWU game coming up and they wanted to focus on that. This is devastating news in the area since we have not made it to the playoffs since 2006 and many fans are excited that we are back. We wish they would get it out there and get it behind them but that is not the case. As they say..next man up. I look forward to a slobber knocker of a game on the frozen tundra. I don't think we get much advantage in the weather - a lot of our players are from the south, Florida especially. Well - good luck and stay warm on Saturday.

GO GUINS!
