GDT: Semifinal Game YSU v EWU

YSU is a very good team and I doubt the impending suspensions (if true) will have any outcome on the game. I am sure they have a lot of quality depth and we're not 100% either.

I'm predicting another blowout.

YSU had a nice draw to get where they are and they will be a formidable team but I think we run away with this one. It will be cold again, really cold, but the playing surface should be fine. No snow or moisture expected. We have an advantage in skill positions and if we get up early it will be lights out early on. YSU will need to control the clock and run the ball down our throats. We have struggled with these types of teams in the past when they have a mobile QB who can take the ball and run, but it doesn't appear YSU does. We actuall do welly against running teams that don't have a mobile QB. I think we get stops early, we put points up early, and YSU has to change plans and its ineffective. I see a 20 point win coming...

I love your optimism! I sure hope you're right!

Here's a couple of negative trends we need to overcome:

We have never won a playoff semifinal on a Saturday. The Villanova game was played on a Friday.

This game is dangerously similar to the 1997 game, when we were playing great heading into the semi with Youngstown. And for whatever reason, we just played terrible that game.

We have a terrible record against the MVC; we are 6 games below .500. No other conference has given us such problems.

Incidentally, we are winless against the SoCon, although that is misleading. We've only played one SoCon team- Appalachian State- and they aren't in that conference now. Doesn't it seem strange that we only have one game in all these years against SoCon teams?

I had to look. 5-11 against the Gateway/Missouri Valley. That sucks. :(

Just listened to coach Pelini on their local radio show. What a condescending d**k. Pretty much dissed Eastern, Kupp, and the Big Sky. Radio guys asked Pelini if he thought Eastern has seen a team as physical as YSU this year. Pelini basically said no, and that the Eagles are a finesse team. Man, were these guys confident. I'd love to see #3 in their backfield all day. They didn't even mention their suspensions.

f*ck this guy.

You guys played toe to toe with NDSU. Not many teams in the nation can say that.

I think you guys will win this one.

Can I start a "A time to move up to FBS" thread?

Go Eags!

YSU fan here and I want to compliment you guys on a great team. I watched the Richmond game and you definitely have all aspects of the game covered. As far a Pelini and his comments - I was at the show and attend most of them. He says the same thing each week about every team. We want to play Pelini Bingo when he talks - because we know exactly what he is going to say. I would not take the comment as offensive - I honestly think he has not watched much film on Eastern and doesn't exactly what Kupp has done. As far as the toughness of EWU...He is a down to business coach and is not impressed or intimidated by many things when it comes to football. He is a man of few words when it comes to the press, radio and news. He is not going to give accolades to anyone - even his own players. That is not his style. He comes from this town and we have had our series of misfortunes and devastating economics and the Stoops brothers and him are from that mold. They played football for Ron Stoops Sr. at the same high school. Bob, Mike and Mark have all made their mark on college football and Bo is cut from the same mold. As a matter of fact, Ron Stoops Jr. is our special teams coach. We are a town that has been through the ringer and he represents that spirit. So as far as toughness - people from Youngstown think anyone not from here cannot be nearly as tough as us. Just the way it is and the culture that we grew up in. The rustbelt created a sense of toughness that is almost arrogant at times.

As far as the suspensions - I don't think they wanted to bring that up in light of the Wofford game and EWU game coming up and they wanted to focus on that. This is devastating news in the area since we have not made it to the playoffs since 2006 and many fans are excited that we are back. We wish they would get it out there and get it behind them but that is not the case. As they say..next man up. I look forward to a slobber knocker of a game on the frozen tundra. I don't think we get much advantage in the weather - a lot of our players are from the south, Florida especially. Well - good luck and stay warm on Saturday.

GO GUINS!

Welcome to our board and thanks for the insight on your team and coach. I'm really looking forward to this game. Anytime we have played anyone from the MVFC it has been a tough game and we've been on both sides of the W/L column in those. I wouldn't exactly call the Spokane area a Tundra though.

Thanks Cats. I'm always rooting for the Big Sky in the playoffs and am glad I'm not alone.

I don't have a problem with these kind of remarks. There is something to be said for respecting your opponent, but would anyone honestly want a Coach to say anything but "we're going to win." Respect is earned, and if we beat them on Saturday we will have earned theirs.

Thanks 92, but let's keep that 'move up' garbage in the dumpster fire it belongs in, egrizz.

Confidence is one thing, ignorance is another. There is a reason Pelini isn't HC in Lincoln anymore, and it's not because of wins and losses. It's because he's a complete jerk who got caught trashing the fanbase and administration. He and Tressel are two peas in a pod. As for tough, the real gangsters walk slowly and talk with a smile. I don't care if you're in the Rust Belt, or Inland Northwest. Good to read the opinion of an even-keeled, pleasant, and knowledgeable Guin fan on this board. Welcome Pete.

Bo talks a lot about what I stated before - the mentality of Youngstown people overcoming adversity. He also mentions coaches that shaped him that were legends in town. We are a town that likes rebels and people who have overcome great odds. They also like people who tell the Man to go stuff it...like Jim Traficant - look him up. The suspensions are just another obstacle to overcome...that is the way he looks at it.

I thought it was a good press conference. I'm not sure what the beef is with Pellini.
Think you are confusing the earlier comments of a Pelini radio show interview with the weekly presser in the video above. They are "tonally" different.

We get it Peteonastick; underdog mentality. Have you ever seen Cheney? :D Like that your board is back to talking football. Think your OL played great against a tough Wofford team and Webb showed great vision and quickness. Beside Hunter Well's return, what changed the offensive production a few weeks ago? Light switch come on? I believe Eastern will be able to move the ball in cold weather; maybe not as much if the wind kicks up. We know our defense will show up and they are playing fast right now. Two teams peaking at the right time in this one. Certainly want to get on YSU fast, but that hasn't been the case all season. Don't think we can use our mutual opponent, NSDU, as a measuring stick in this one; except to say, GG didn't have a great game with 3 picks (2 in the redzone I believe) and we still went to OT.

Cream rises to the top. Two good teams face each other this week. Eags 43rd in the Sagarin and YSU 66th. Of course, the minions of mordor are rated higher at 37.

Worlds weirdest "hype" video. Talk about dehumanizing your opponent... Yikes.

Haha that is a strange how video indeed. Probably made by this dude:

At least he has done some research on us and can name our players by name...unlike the last couple of coaches we played....
