Head Coach Situation

Me thinks it is time to start emailing El Presidente regularly about firing The Clown. Heck, given Macriss idiotic hire of 26 YO no college coaching experience to run the womens tennis team, I say we go for a twofer and give Macriss his walking papers as well.

What happened to the old coach? He'd been there awhile.

Macriss is another CSU lifer, spending the majority of his time as a Assoc. or Deputy AD before becoming AD. He just kinda was handed the keys when Winless retired. Why can't the AD position be opened up as well to a National search? If Macriss is still the best candidate, he stays and rides out the Golden State teet.

It all has to do with money!!! If the Hornets could fire him I am sure they would. An event like dinner under the lights and the golf tournament would not be huge fundraisers if we had 200k to spare to pay a coach to go away and hire another

GCM I think we worked together on the football stat crew when Marcriss came aboard in the mid nineties as Sports Information Director. I don't recall Bill having any experience as a coach or athlete, he was a journalism major. I'm sure he learned a lot from working with Wanless but doubt that we couldn't have found someone more qualified especially for the $158,000 he is paid. He applied for athletic director jobs at Alaska Fairbanks and Illinois Springfield in 2011 & 2012. Apparently he isn't good enough for them but is good enough for us without even looking at who else might be out there. "Passing the key" without a search was also used when Coach Raske left and the track team hired Coach Magley. The Cross Country/ Track Distance coach Laura Harmon hired in July of 2015 suddenly left in August and now coaches at Sierra College. She was replaced by a local high school coach. I met Coach Harmon last season when she was recruiting one of the girl's on my high school track team. I was impressed by her background, runner at Oregon, coached at Oregon State and TCU. She was very upbeat about the program and looking forward to building a strong distance unit at Sac State. I was shocked when I heard that she had left for a JC.
The bottom line is that we as alums, supporters, season ticket holders and stakeholders in this program deserve to know what's going on. They owe us an explanation of how they intend to improve the program. I am losing faith in their ability and focus to make the program successful. I have no intention of continuing to support the program if they are just going through the motions.

GL: Close, I was there with Jeff Minahan. Macriss may have been on board but I cant recall.
Those were the days and the only reason I have fond memories of Sac State football. I was more '87-92.

I'll give Winless/Macriss credit, they have brought the department into the modern era with real time updates, organization, and media availability. But they have failed miserably in capitalizing on the fertile Sac valley resources and recruiting/retaining good marquee sport HC's. Katz is the exception, and I suspect he is cut out of the same alumni cloth as you and me............a sadistic desire for continued failure.

Sac sponsors 21 varsity sports? Why? The only other BSC school to offer more is UCFE with their golden fountain. With a $22M budget, also Top 3 in BSC, why can't the football program consistently churn out at least 6-5 seasons?? To completely revamp the program with new HC's and their chosen players every 4-5 years is ludacris. Why are 5yr. contracts being given to the most visible sport and rolling the dice on an unproven HC? Or actually proven, as he was run out of his last gig.

We cant fully fund all 21 sports and hope to be competitive in football. There needs to be some cuts or acknowledgement that football eats first and any other sport that doesn't draw at least 50% attendance/capacity at each sporting venue be funded accordingly. Track is cool, but who cares? I say roll up the mens track team and use the money for money generating sports. Move non-money generating sports to club level and keep the 16 required for NCAA and Title 9.

Too may symptoms to diagnose Hornet athletics, but I am also with you, that if the school is just going through the motions year after year, decade after decade, just to say we offer athletics, I am outta here too.

What is really sad is the same shipping container, swaying press box is still there, probably along with the chair from Staples that I used. Same with the gym bleachers, unbelievable the same Woodrow Wilson era facilities are still being used by a NCAA DI program after 25+yrs.

Yes, we need money. But with a $22M budget they can't find $200K in some special fund? This is a state sponsored organization you know?

Anyone who is concerned and/or cares enough about the program(s) should blow up President Nelsen’s and Macriss’ email. This would at least let them know people are paying attention to the way things are going.

Nelsen: [email protected]
Nelsen’s Chief of Staff, Lisa Cardoza: [email protected]
Macriss: [email protected]

Hard to expect more than “hand the keys to the next guy” when they guy calling the shots had the keys handed to him. This was one of my concerns when Macriss got the job. He needs to not shit the bed on the FB HC hire…whenever that may be.

Fresno State just fired Head Coach Tom DeRuyter. Apparently even though he is 30-30 overall the 1-7 this season with the lone win coming against us didn't cut it. Nice to have standards and expectations.

Also nice to have a donor group willing to pay him 3million to go away and another 1:5million to hire another coach.
Also nice to have an AD with a clue who can facilitate such a bold and costly move. Meanwhile we will likely use a $175k buyout as an excuse to not do anything about our failure of a coach.

What about all the cost savings gained from switching from grass to turf a few years ago? Those $$$ surely are lying around to be used for a 'mitigating circumstance' that the department can tap??

My kids collect cereal Box Tops and turn them into school for kickbacks from the cereal mfg's. Have all the fans bring all their box tops to the remaining games and the department can redeem them for $$$ to replace the HC?

I'm just curious...since it appears most of you agree he isn't going anywhere for a year, what if Sears manages to win six games next season without getting us on NCAA probation...can he stay? I'm only asking because that six-win bar seemed to be just fine prior to him taking this job over.

I’m just curious…have you penciled in Sears ahead of Sperbeck on your list of worst Hornet head coaches yet? I’m only asking because this program returned to dumpster fire status as soon as Sperbeck was gone.

If this team won 8 Games I would be good with bringing him back. With a FBS game vs future Big Sky team and home games to start the season vs Incarnate Word and Weber. Also with all the young players that have played these last 2 seasons. Better see major improvement. I do look at The University of Colorado. A young team that won 2-3 games a year for 3 years and now are close to winning the PAC 12 South. It takes time. They were ready to fire MacIntyre at Colorado. Now he is the savior.

I agree that next years schedule appears favorable and we will have a talented, experienced and still young team. We need to take advantage of it, not just use it as an easy path to 5 o 6 wins. I am quickly losing my confidence in this coaching staff to get the most out of the team. Sears was handed a team loaded with talent and experience, he did a good job holding the team together and getting 7 wins. I really think that team was capable of winning more games and making the playoffs. Last year we went through 4 QB's so you could expect a fall off. I wasn't as concerned as much with the losses as much as how flat and unprepared the team looked. This was especially apparent in the Causeway against a very bad dungpile team and continued to the Western Oregon game this season. I just don't want to waste anymore seasons. I can't believe that if the AD has the will and honestly evaluates the situation a way can't be found to make a change.
I don't think the Colorado situation is similar. The Colorado team that Macintyre took over had been horrible for years, he had to build it from square one. Sears handed a solid program and it has slipped ever since.

Good point.

Sears gets a talented team that goes 7-5 and just misses the playoffs and then goes
2-9 and after tonight against Cal Poly will be 1-8 with two games left.

Baffling why the administration settles for this 25 years at the Div I level at Sac State and Div I AA in football
We have not won a championship in football or basketball but in basketball we have at least advanced to the post season.

And schools like Southern Utah win the Big Sky in football after joining a few years ago with a fan base of 4K?
Schools like /Southern Utah can win this conference in football , why not Sac State?

Baffling .

The team played their hearts out tonight and deserves to be congratulated. We didn't have enough to pull it off but they kept fighting back all night, that was great to see. If they can bring that kind of intensity to the next two we have a good shot to beat Portland and the dugpile. I don't know what the attendance was but the place was empty, maybe 4,000-5,000. I have rarely seen a crowd that small especially for a Poly game.
Hopefully Nelsen and Macriss can see what future holds if they allow this death spiral to continue.

agree that this team does fight.

47 points against one of the best teams in the FCS in the top FCS conference in the country.

The Hornets do fight .

Have a great bye week , rest up, study hard, practice hard, and fight on Sacramento State!!

Stingers up!!

Yes. Winning six games within a year with a young team would have my vote to keep him.

I said this a couple of years ago when he was Co-HC at Folsom High School and I'll say it again now that he's Co-OC at Eastern Washington ----- Go get Troy Taylor!

Have you seen what he's doing with EWU's offense this season? This is the same guy that developed Jake Browning -- a current Heisman trophy candidate-- and countless QB's in the area. Not to mention Folsom's HS program became a Nationally relevant program once he got involved.

He's proving to know what he's doing at the collegiate level now at Eastern, so go out and bring the Cordova High graduate back home where he belongs.

Do it!
