Kadeezy and all you other people who think MBT is better have know idea what football is. You all just look at statistics and have know idea about the other aspects of the game. If MBT hadn't started for UCLA because the starting and backup QB's got hurt, you wouldn't be talking. Obviously he left for a reason like the new head coach basically said You won't be getting any playing time, I wonder why.

Don't tell me what I think. Never once have I EVER typed that MBT should be the starter. I have only been lobbying for him to get some game time to see what he could do. I think he did okay today for jumping in the middle of this mess.

I don't care where he played before. He was garbage for UCLA and he was a walk-on so it's not like he's some drop down 4 star recruit. When we're losing 42-7, what the hell is wrong with putting in your second string QB? I don't get why you all take it so personally. Maybe you're related, whatever. But seriously, get over it it's football.

I'm not cocky or anything but just so you know, I probably forgot more about football while I was taking my morning dump than you'll ever know.

As if this was bad enough, now we have Montana coming into Hornet Stadium next week. Ugh.

I guess we can hope for a UM letdown coming off their last minute win and a for a pissed off Hornet squad to lay some hat and make some plays.

Hey all...can we leave the personal attacks out. I know we are pissed at what transpired today. Please keep the criticism towards the team and make it constructive. Thank you.

The problem I see with BOTH QB's is that they both have their mind made up to who they are throwing it to before the snap. That's obvious becuase neither QB takes the time to read the defense and make a a play.

You are absolutely correct. This has bugged me for quite a while...the "Im calling a play and sticking with it come hell or high water" attitude. Against good teams, they rip us apart all day in doing that...and they have so far this year.
I agree as well. This is also compounded by all of the wideouts run deeper routes with no underneath or dumpoff pass. If there isn't one it gets tougher. You have to get the ball out quicker against good teams or you get sacked. Without good protection or time the QB can't go through his progression or reads. He just doesn't have the time to do this. How many times have you seen an outlet?

I so badly want the Hornets to improve, but I just haven’t seen it. Their defense is so bad. Even a terrible, injury depleted Idaho State moved the ball against the Hornets.
I’m glad they have gotten two wins, and they should beat Northern Colorado and could potentially beat Northern Arizona, but four wins is the most they will have. I really thought the team was going to take a step forward this year.

I hope I’m wrong

Anything can happen. Montana comes in after a hard game with EWU and looking forward to a showdown game with Weber the next week for the championship. We should be favored vs Northern Colorado and Uc dungpile, Northern Arizona is at home, they beat Portland today by about the same margin as we did. Although Montana State is on the road they have been inconsistent this year. Keep the faith!

I may as well get this game recap over with now. WSU brought their A game and there aren’t many teams that can keep up with them when they do that. This team seems to be on a roll and the Oct 31st match up seems to be the marquee match up for the conference this year. They are a top 25 team and the solidified that ranking this week with the steam rolling of the Hornets. With that said, I’ll try not to get too down on the Hornets as they played a high powered offense today.

The good (this will be short):
WR drops were way down compared to last week. (This was most likely a direct result of all the over throws by Smith.)
Diniz set a school record for 7 consecutive made FG’s. That’s it for this game. Nothing else was positive IMO. Also Diniz is the only positive for the special teams as a whole.

The bad:
Since the only good is on special teams, I’ll stay there. The coverage team, both kick-off and punt, couldn’t cover for sh!t. They looked as though they didn’t even practice special teams at all. The reason this scared me as is this shows the lack of depth that this football team has. As a coach, I would think that the bench players would be used to contribute on special teams to give you starters some blows. I know some starters play ST but as a whole, the majority of the ST’s are bench players. This seriously concerns me. In close games, the outcome is usually decided by which team performs better in this category.

Defense….I don’t know where to start. I think the frustration is the lack of ability to make changes by the coaches, specifically the DC. Having already gotten torn to shreds by other pass happy teams this season (EWU specifically) they defensive play calling has reflected absolutely no adjustments. The sit back and play on the heels type of play calling hasn’t worked once this season, so I beg the question as to why the DC continually approaches pass happy offenses in the same manner time and time again. This is just sad. I refrain myself from jumping on the DB’s as I honestly believe they could man up on these receivers and have a better result then the pathetic zone scheme the defense is currently running. The DC let a playmaker such as Toone run wild with the pussified zone defenses that he used to “try” to contain him. Why not switch it up to a man on man with over the top safety help!?!?! The DC does know that this is allowed right? If this guy doesn’t make any adjustments between now and the seasons’ end, he need to go…bottom line. Also the overall lack of aggression of the defense is starting to wear on me. Be aggressive, fvcking blitz or something. This lack of aggression directly reflects on the defensive coaching they are receiving. FVCKING HIT SOMEBODY!
I will note that the defensive front 7 did a good job at containing the run in the first half. They didn’t allow any big plays via a run and seemed to control the line of scrimmage during a lot of the run calls. The only thing missing was an aggressive pass rush. If the front four can’t apply pressure on a pass (which they didn’t) then send a LB or two to at least TRY to get to the QB. The DB’s will always get burned if there is no pressure on the QB…period.

On offense it was the same old story of inconsistency. The Hornets had a few drives they could have built off of but they didn’t. The constant over throws and lack of confidence of Smith during the game warranted his benching and I now think they have a HUGE question mark at the QB position. The final nail in the coffin IMO was the INT at the end of the 2nd quarter than led to a WSU TD that put the game on ice. Dailey has a solid game as he didn’t have a fumble (hard to believe I know) but McGowan thought it wise to not have two hands on the ball while running between the tackles and it led to a fumble. A huge one as the Hornets was driving early in the 2nd half and was in the red zone threatening. The offensive line didn’t show up for the second half and it showed. I also will add that the play calling was a little sketchy. There were some times where I thought Sperbeck could have went with a more balanced attack but decided to run, run throw punt, or pass, pass, pass, punt. I can’t put all the blame squarely on him as penalties seemed to sabotage some of the Hornets drives which took any momentum away and resulted in quite a few 3rd and longs. With regard to the MBT vs JS argument, I will note that the biggest noticeable difference was the arm strength shown by MBT. As I saw MBT gun the ball 15+ yards with ease, it dawned on me as this may be the reason that not many shots down the field with Smith are taken. If Smith is just going to throw up a floater (see late 2nd quarter INT), why even take the risk?

In closing it will be interesting to see how the coaches and players respond to this brutal 3 game stretch of playing top tier teams. It will truly show how/if the program has progressed under Sperbeck. The most concerning aspect is how this brutal stretch will affect recruiting. I can’t imagine going 0 for 3 in that stretch helping bring in recruits in any way. With that said, the team needs to regroup and focus on Montana who squeaked by in yet another close one.

GO HORNETS!

Your screen name says it all. But I will say this. I view the Big Sky Conference in 3 tiers. 1st tier is the top 3 teams, 2nd teir, the middle teams, and the 3rd tier teams being the bottom of the conference. I honestly feel that Sperbeck has pulled this program from the 3rd tier into the lower 2nd tier. I want to see Sperbeck pull this program from the lower 2nd tier to compete with the lower 1st tier. I honestly believe this is currently in progress. All of our losses have come against ranked opponents, ranked as in top 25 FCS teams (UNLV was a FBS loss). This program is definitely moving in the right direction. Trust me; I was a student during the Moosh Dark Ages. We are far from that. I couldn’t get through a game without a heavy drinking pre-party. (OK sometimes I never remembered a game, but can you blame me?) We’ll see how things shape up in the next few seasons.

Smith is a walk-on and MBT is a re-tread.
When are we going to recruit a Higgins, Nichols or Denham?

This was a systematic failure, offense, defense and Special teams all looked unprepared. Sperbeck is not the answer.

Weber was as bad under graybeal and the hornets were under mooshiagian. Mcbride has turned that program into high gear in the same time we have not improved in any aspect. We have the highest paid HC and budget in the BSC, yet we still suck. Where have we improved?

It's year 3 for Sperbeck. Calm down.

I must say I thought the game was going to be closer, I'll also admit that Im not dissapointed in the result, but having said that I like the Hornets, and wish they succeed when they arent playing the Wildcats, you guys host the fizz next week, and this Wildcat fan is hoping you guys have the game of your lives, and take down the over-rated Frizzlies (and Im not just saying that so Weber has a shot at the title, I really do like Sac St).

Good luck next weekend.

GCM, I feel your pain man, but I think it's too soon to kick Sperbeck to the curb. I think he's done an acceptable job. But, if we have another year like this next year, he's on the hot-seat.

Also, I think he will have no choice but to give ol' Lou the boot after this season in an effort to save his own azz.

Kadeezy I agree. When Bolen scored that TD to open the 4th quarter, Sac's linebackers were standing there watching him run in. That pisses me off - you gotta put a pad on somebody even if you get flagged.

I agree that Sac State under Sperbeck has maybe improved to the top of the bottom tier, or the bottom of the second tier. But, for the ten years I’ve been following the Hornets, they have not been in the top tier. I may be mistaken but they are the only school in the conference to have not won or tied for the conference championship (I’m not counting UNC).
I do feel the Hornets were going the right direction Sperbeck’s first two years, but now I feel like they’ve regressed. But by no means do I want there to be a coaching change, I think a coach should get at least four years. I just wish he would change the home game times back to 6:05, at least for September and October.
I’ll be at the Montana game wishing for a miracle.

JJ, you're right. That goalline lack of effort was the epitome of this year's defense. Undersized, underwhelming, and under-inspired...

I don't play anymore, but when I did, to score on me or my defense was a personal affront to my manhood. If you have to score on me or my D, you'd better damn well pay the price for it and respect me.

I think the D-Line is acceptable, the LBs are a joke, and except for Deonte Gordon our secondary is hack.

But, as SD brought up, what's with the lack of blitzing and stunt calls?! You're not pressuring Higgins at all and he and Tim Toone are still tearing you apart, what's the harm in sending a couple LBs every once ina while? It's not like they were having trouble getting yards underneath...
