Idaho State

After what happened in Pocatello last year, I don't think we will be taking them lightly. This is always a season making game for them. I'm sure they will try to play in Reed Gym again. It's like a HS gym and suits their style better. They will prepare some funky defenses for Jeremy. I don't think that any of it will matter much. We seem to be playing with a great deal of intensity, confidence, and efficiency. Also, it will not be the first time we have seen that matchbox of a Jr. High gym.

As they work to slow Jeremy down, things should open up for everyone else. We will see a lot of zone. Ryan, Dusty, Jerrick, McKay, and Cody should have a lot of open looks. We should also get some good inside looks.

I plan to make the short trip up to visit our friends to the north. I hope that several hundred will make the trip from O town as well. :coffee:

Enjoy yourself at Reed, Olds, the very small contingent of Bengal fans will be freezing our ass off in a cold and empty Holt Arena (it's suppposed to below zero much of this week, and we all know cold air sinks).

This has been one of the more disappointing Idaho State teams I've seen. Telfair is a shell of the player he was last year, we have no interior defense and we are a terrible rebounding team. Plus we've lost two starters and a key reserve to injury. The only hope we have is that Weber struggles with the three ball in the cold, empty and spacious dome against our zone, and ISU gets hot from three. Could happen, but we have played exactly two games in the Dome so far and the last was two weeks ago. And attendance has been on a downward spiral for quite awhile. Hardly a home court advantage. Olds, I hope you drop by after you're done at Reed. Travel safe.

OK. I'll sit where ever they tell me to. I was sure they would play it at Reed after what they were able to do last year. I guess the magic hasn't been there this year.

I think the Wilson kid was more important to your chemistry than anyone might have thought. Sometimes the contribution of 'glue' guys is not visible until they are gone. I still expect a very spirited and competitive game.

If the game was a bit earlier, there is a good Italian place just west of the campus. I might go early and have diner there any ways.

You can never go wrong with Buddy's although you'll wreak of garlic for a few days. Yes Ben Wilson was a very important "glue guy." He was also our leading rebounder. Then we lost Ingram and Chivichyian to injury, and Garrity has bad knees and can't play every game. Most importantly Telfair has been suspended and playing in a funk all year. But hopefully he'll rise to the occasion and put on a show Saturday night.

Idaho State runs a tight zone defense which Weber should be able to shoot over. If Weber's shooters are cold, and if the Bengals make the game ugly, Weber could be upset. Weber needs to make this a half-court game, find open threes, and shoot above 40% from behind the arc. Rebounding will also be important, as always.

Unfortunately this year ISU's zone is anything but "tight" --opponents are shooting 56 percent from two point range, which is 347 out of 352 D-1 teams. The word "sieve" comes to mind. They are also last in the conference in defensive rebound percentage so if you miss the first shot, you have a good chance of getting a second.

Do you think that Telfair declaring for the draft and having family and those in his circles telling him that he is amazing took some of that focus and humility away from him? I remember him repeatedly telling Evans thank you for the opportunity in a post game last year. He appears to have the wrong kind of swagger this year.

I personally don't believe any of the conspiracy theories about moving the game to Reed last year. They move certain games there every year. I wish I could make the trip on Saturday.

Reed Gym didn't beat us last year, a hot ISU team did. Quite frankly, I think the atmosphere at Reed is better than at Holt. Holt just has a bigger capacity and better infrastructure for large crowds. I hope it will be a large crowd. I'd like to se a couple thousand from O town make the short trip. I will be there.

Our team is developing nicely and this will be a good test against a zone team. Montana beat their zone by beating it down the floor. When you don't beat it down the floor, then you need to find the seams and open spots. I'm sure that we will prep all week long on just that. ISU would be foolish to try to man up on us. It would be boys against men.

Did I see right? ISU's last home game drew a whopping 300 fans?

That's not even Sac State numbers anymore.

I can't figure Evans out at ISU. He seemed to do a good job of developing players he inherited from O'Brien, but I just don't see it with most of his recruits. The exception being Luzcando. The bigs are of no threat, and why in the world did they take Garrity as a transfer from UVU? He has been sitting out with injuries the last two seasons. I hope he's a walk-on at least.

They probably had such a small crowd due to school being out, a holiday shopping week, a lesser opponent, too many losses on the road, and little excitement for their team. I expect that they will get a large crowd for WSU. We should bring more than 300.

Attendance at Idaho State, as it has at most Big Sky schools, has been steadily declining over the past decade. Contributing factors include many of the common issues at other Big Sky schools -- entirely too much basketball on television, a lack of interest on the part of students and younger fans, and the inability to compete with other regional schools on the floor and in recruiting.

On an ISU specific basis, we have had consistently bad teams over the last ten years (last year was an exception), we play terrible non-conference schedules (this year we had one D-1 non-conference home game) and our facilities suck.

As to Evans' recruiting ISU struggles mightily to attract kids to Pocatello. They rarely sign kids in the early recruiting period, and they usually wind up having to bring in half a dozen kids in order to sign one or two in the spring. They are pretty much recruiting from the bottom of the heap. It would be great to build that new arena to kick start the program, but it doesn't appear that is going to happen anytime soon as fundraising has ground to a halt. Thank goodness for the women's program, it makes basketball season bearable.

Weber wins 76-63.

This has all the makings of a 'trap' game. We need to be on guard. No more games like Denver.
This game is never a sure thing. If we shoot a low percentage, we could easily lose this one. Hopefully Senglin stays hot to finish the roadie.

They don't have an inside presence. Yes, I know that they play a lot of zone (1-3-1 and 2-3) but that plays to our advantage, feed it inside or drive it. I would be cutting all game on the Bengals. We are an outside shooting team and they have struggled mightily defensively. Losing Ingram and Wilson has been a killer for the Bengals.

DI hoops, like Bengal said, is dying a slow death. The NCAA isn't responding since the haves are still doing well (i.e. making money hand over fist). The NCAA doesn't give a damn about the mid-majors and low-majors because, well, frankly, these schools refuse to work together and fix the issues. What is the major issue? Scheduling! It is so unequal and unfair. Look at a good chunk of the top 25. The vast majority played 80% of their OOC games at home, and the rest of the games were mostly on neutral courts. Once they start having to travel, we quickly see those teams who are legitimate contenders and those who are merely impostors (Duke and UNC??). Scheduling should be taken out of the coaches hands. However, I do have to acknowledge the elephant in the room: RPI. This really affects scheduling and coaches are extremely aware of the problem of RPI. A team in low 100s isn't going to travel to a 200+ for fear of losing. look what happens when a good team loses a couple of games to low RPI schools...we all saw Weber dip into the high 200s this season. RPI is one of the biggest scheduling mechanisms and frankly it is killing scheduling, which is killing DI basketball. Maybe it is time for the NCAA to reevaluate how a teams RPI is measured before DI basketball dies forever. RIP DI Basketball...because of RPI!

I am sorry to hear that Bengal. Obviously, I hope we win, but I would love to see a strong Idaho State basketball team. The harder the road trip to Ogden and Pocatello for other Big Sky teams the better.

I think that ISU will try to double on Braxton or Hill if they get the ball on the low post. They will also try to always keep someone in front of Senglin. The interesting thing is how they will be able to do both of those things at the same time. Add to that with our other options on the perimeter and, as long as we have an average shooting night, we will be just fine. I expect that we will play with a lot of intensity and confidence.

Dress warmly. National Weather Service is calling for wind chills in the minus 20 to minus 30 range beginning tomorrow night. The old spud cellar will be a might chilly Saturday night.

Hopefully they sale hot chocolate at the games up there...the players may need to wear the full length under armour thermal layers under their jerseys for this one...Holt can get DAMN cold.

Saturday is supposed to be one of the warmer days. It may be cold, but not -20. I have been to countless games and events at Holt. Even when it was bitter cold outside, I don't ever remember it being that cold inside. Worrying about the cold at ISU is somewhat like sacstatesman worrying about the altitude in Ogden. It's just not a big deal. I worry more about ISU's zone and their shooters getting hot. We need to be focused in on playing D. The cold in Pocatelo may be a drawback in recruiting, but it is not a problem for playing the game. Spectators can dress warm and bring a blanket. What better excuse do you need to cuddle with your honey. :coffee:

And I was worried about where you were....wasted my time and thoughts....not even close to being the same olds...both teams will have to put up with the cold but in my example, only one team trained at altitude....do I have to prove this again?? I have talked to many of our players and they all agree that altitude definitely affects them...more so at Cedar City and Flagstaff but it still has an effect at anything over 3500ft..... :wall:
