Jazz sign joel

This whole Hayward initiated mess sure seems to be playing out bad for Joel as I suspected it might. His ability to stick with the Jazz is still dependent on what he can give but it sure looks like an up hill battle at this point :-(

https://www.deseretnews.com/article...must-cut-one-player-before-season-begins.html

Summer League games killed Joel. He looked lost and uncomfortable, kinda like his Sophomore season at Weber. However, the coaches admitted many times, that they weren't looking for Joel to "stuff the stat sheet" but wanted him to work on setting screens, moving without the ball, and playing stretch type defense. It almost seemed like the Jazz were seeing if Joel could play the 3 at times. They had him playing out of position a lot. Regrettably for Joel, he didn't react well to the opportunity/situation. No matter, I really feel the Jazz overacted a bit too much this Summer after Hayward decided to leave. They kept signing has-beens and role players in any effort to get a hit. I think the reaction will ultimately hurt the Jazz's chemistry. The Jazz need young players with potential, not a roster full of role players. They drafted Joel for a reason and he did really well for them playing a stretch type 4.

IMO, they won't cut Joel. I have no idea why they went after O'Neal, But it seems like a questionable move to me. Also, the Jazz seem to be flushed with point guards. I don't know who they will cut, but their biggest need is for wing scoring, defense and rebounding. Joel fills some of those needs. I just don't know if he is ready for the regular rotation just yet, but he is close. :coffee:

O'Neal played at Baylor. Dennis Lindsey is a big Baylor honk, that's why they went after him.

Is his son still playing there?

Yes, and Dennis played there as well. And, his wife is also a Baylor graduate.

Looks to me like the Jazz have a problem.

Good for Joel tonight. I really believe he's on life support after the fallout of Wayward's departure and Summer League play. I didn't see the block but his line reads: 9pts, on 3/3fg, 1/13pt, 2/2ft, 1monster dunk | 3reb | 1blk | 6mins

Well, since he is on life support (I agree thoroughly with your statement), it was a great outing for Joel. He did everything he was supposed to in limited mins. It doesn't matter what level the competition was, he went into the game was given so many mins and ended up doing great with what he was handed. Now, he just needs to be consistent. He was with the Stars and I think he can be again for the Jazz.

Consistent he's been in limited minutes.
Tonight's line vs the Suns: 12pts, on 4/4fg, 1/13pt, 3/3ft | 6reb | 2ast | 8mins
He's making a case, keep it up, Joel.

O'Neale's line for 8 minutes was meh, and Bradley got 1 minute.

I think the angst about Joel's summer play is overblown as he was nursing some kind of injury. And too much attention to the summer throws out his D-league performance which was dominating. RIght now he's brought that D-league energy to the Jazz and has been a huge boost off the bench. In very limited minutes (and I know the sample size is extremely small with just 3 games) Joel is #4 on the team in scoring with 10 points a game and #4 on the team in rebounds at 4.3 a game. Small sample size but it also proves the value he brings as a spark. The scoring is boosted by his ability to hit 3's, which has to put additional luster on his game. Personally I don't think we'll see Joel at the end of the Jazz bench this year as he is going to have a bigger role with the team.

Exum could be out for the year with shoulder injury. Not sure if this will help or hurt Joel as they will now need to keep another PG.

It might actually help since I heard they might be able to use an injury exception to keep one more on the roster. I'm really bummed for Exum, though. I thought he finally had a chance to show if he belongs or not.

Exum was going to play on the wing anyway. He would have been the 4th PG. I don't see this effecting the situation for Joel.

No, he was the backup point guard.

What I heard the Jazz coaches saying was that he was competing for a starting spot at the 2 guard and was being considered for a back up role as a point guard. Either way, his situation has little to do with Joel's competition to make the roster as a 4/5 combo man.

Not sure how you reason the need to address the the loss of a guard having little to do with Joel being 1 of 3 fighting to remain with the team. Didn't you also say early on that Wayward's situation wouldn't have anything to do with Joel's? The dominos that have fallen because of Wayward's decision have a lot to do with with the the bigs who have been added that Joel is now competing with.

Personally, if the Jazz don't use him, let another team pick him up. He is proving that he can contribute. He has a heck of a lot of upside.

On another note, Jeremy Senglin played 5 min and ended up with 6 points. He was 2-2 from range.

My reasoning was and is that Hayward was playing on the wing, a 2/3 combo guy. Yes, they brought in another wing guy and a big man in the draft. They also brought in some other combo guys to compete for the last positions on the team. Yes, Joel is in competition for a roster spot and playing time. Everyone on the team, every year, is in a competition for the same thing. That is how it all works, unless you are on a rec. team. Anybody can be cut and anybody can have injuries. Hayward's leaving and Exum's injury shakes things up a bit, but it doesn't change that underlying competition.

The Jazz have some real issues.

I'm sure that Joel will get picked up by somebody real quick. It could end up being a better situation for Joel.
