You identified yourself as a fan and season ticket holder. Either one of those things make you a booster. You identified your Tweet with #WeAreWeber. That is a self ID as a booster. You are a booster and from here on out you will be known as a booster. As a booster, you fall under NCAA guidelines and may not contact a recruit or potential recruit. You may be contacted by officials from WSU or the NCAA to explain what you have done. If you are a fan, why would you potentially harm the thing that you claim to love.

I don't know if being a fan/ticket holder counts as being a booster... am I a booster???
• You are a member of a group that supports or promotes Weber State Athletics (e.g., Wildcat Club);
I am a season ticket holder, but not a member of any club (Wildcat or Gridiron)
• You have made financial contributions to the department of athletics or an athletics booster organization;
Just paid for my ticket and a yearly donation to keep my WSU license plate
• You have provided any benefits to Weber State student-athletes, prospective student-athletes, or their families;
I haven't done this
• Weber State has asked you to help, or you have in any way helped, to recruit student-athletes; OR
• You have otherwise assisted in the promotion of Weber State Athletics.
I haven't been asked to help or recruit anyone, I did meet with Jerry and crew once to share some of my ideas for improving WSU marketing

So what's the verdict? Am I a booster? (If I am I'm a pretty poor one :roll: )

So by your definition anyone who identifies themselves as a fan of college basketball is a booster of every college basketball program in the nation. :roll: Get a grip old man. Again, simply being a fan, even a fan who buys a single ticket or a season ticket, doesn't make you a booster. Unless that season ticket purchase includes a scholarship donation or donation to a booster club such as the Wildcat Club. And once you are considered a booster you are always considered a booster. But lets be real, in today's world, the NCAA is crazy to think they can even begin to monitor or police what is said to recruits on social media. This isn't China. I think the NCAA has much bigger problems to worry about.

It's not my definition, it's the NCAA's. The NCAA doesn't ride herd on it. They expect the schools to do it, and report any violations they find. Schools must also report what they have done to correct the situation. If self reported and corrective actions taken, it often goes no further. However, all of that takes time and money. It detracts form the time and money available for everything else, including marketing, scheduling, recruiting, etc. Again, why would you do that?

What are examples of permissible activities?

Even though there are many rules prohibiting your involvement with prospects and the recruiting process, as a booster, you may:

  • -- Attend high school or two-year college athletic contests or other events where prospects may compete, provided no contact occurs.

    --Continue existing friendships.

Whew, it's great to know I can attend high school and Jr. college bball games even though I've stated my support of WSU bball and had years of season tix, I guess that is unless a prospect dives for a loose ball and makes contact with me :yikes: On second thought, I'd better not chance it. I'll discontinue any existing friendships too, just to be safe :roll: .

It's a hard concept to understand, but when you identify yourself as a Wildcat supporter, you are a booster. As such, you fall under the guidelines the NCAA has established for recruiting, whether you like it or not. You should not be making any contact with potential recruits, period. stop it and stop it now. :wall:

Gosh... OK Dad! :cry:

Really? Stop it and stop it now?.... :rofl: I wish that I had that kind of influence over Twitter followers :wtf:

FELLOW WILDCAT FANS: DISREGARD MY PREVIOUS REQUEST TO SHOW A RECRUIT SOME LOVE! DO NOT CONTACT POTENTIAL RECRUITS ON SOCIAL MEDIA UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!! DO NOT SAY HELLO, DO NOT TELL THEM YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THEM IN A WILDCAT UNIFORM.
SO LET IT BE WRITTEN, SO LET IT BE DONE!

Is that good enough Dad?

Olds, that wasn't my tweet but I do like it. Read the heading and check the profile. It was posted by someone a little younger than my old butt! :rofl:
Olds, tell me if Im a BYU booster also and if BYU should suffer violations for something else I did:
There is a young man in my ward leaving for a mission soon. This young man played baseball and basketball for me in Junior High. He came over some time ago while I was picking up equipment after practice. The young man told me he had been offered a number of scholarships. He had scholarship offers to a certain ACC school, Utah, Utah State and BYU along with many other big name universities. He was leaving for a mission and that was a step he had already made his mind up about. He asked me my opinion of what offer I thought he should take. Now I'm not officially a booster at BYU, Utah or Utah State but I do pay my tithing. He had narrowed his choices down to 3 schools 1 of them being an ACC school. I let this young man know that it was completely his choice and he had earned this. He continued to push for my opinion. I gave in because I could see the stress behind his eyes. I told him that he should just go with Weber State and coach Rahe and I laughed. This young man laughed and said "coach Rahe never offered"! I knew Rahe hadn't offered, this kid was pretty special so I'm sure Rahe felt there was no chance he would land him. I talked to him about the U of U, BYU and the ACC school. He was worried about letting members of his family and some friends down if he went to this ACC school. I told him I was proud of him and that everyone would be happy with the choice he made. I did offer a couple of thoughts for him. I told him that 1 school had already pulled scholarships from kids that were away on their missions and the other school recruits so many 1 and done kids that it would scare me if I was him. I told him "personally I hope to see you wearing BYU blue" and smiled at him. This young man will be attending BYU.

Now, how many violations did I commit there? I pay tithing but I don't donate to BYU athletics. I go to games at the Marriott Center every once in a while and pay a lot of money to get them. Let's see....I guess in your NCAA, BYU should suffer for recruiting violations without a doubt. Right Olds?

Wooly; There are no violations there. Nobody expects anyone to give up friendships or family contacts. Certainly, nobody cares if you were to bump into a prospect through no effort on your own. A prospect can contact anyone they want for advise. They can call the Dee Center janitor if they want. I have had similar situations to yours, with similar results BTW, and none of it is a violation. I once tutored a highly recruited prospect in math, to help him pass his ACT. I and everyone at WSU wanted him there, he chose a bigger program elsewhere. Not a violation, because I was a long time family friend and there was no Quid Pro Quo.

You are OK following the kid on social media and learning what you can about him. Attempting to communicate with him or any of his family members is a violation. The list of forbidden communication includes mail, email, telephone, social media, texting, and direct contact. If a school official learns of any such communication, they are required to report it to the NCAA and take appropriate action to correct the problem. There may or may not be sanctions imposed. I have never said that we should not take an interest or talk about a prospect on this forum. However, if we reach out to that prospect or his family, we have crossed the line. We have had some issues with family members coming on this forum and us responding back to them, resulting in a reportable contact incident. I would just as soon avoid all of that and play by the established rules. :thumb: :thumb:

Jumping in here to try and clarify some things.

1.If you think you should be tweeting at recruits, then please refer to this article and the enclosed flow chart: http://www.sbnation.com/2015/2/3/79...ootball-recruits-on-the-internet-a-flow-chart. The article's geared toward football recruiting, but the same principles apply in any sport. Please leave the recruiting to the coaches. WSU boosters contacting recruits may jeopardize that recruit's eligibility should they choose to enroll here.

2. As some of you all discussed, the NCAA has a broad definition of who's a booster (technical term is representative of athletics interests). If you've given money to athletics or any entity that's a part of athletics (Wildcat Club, Roundball Club, Gridiron, etc.), you're a booster. If you have purchased single game or season tickets in any sport, you're a booster. If you're ever asked to assist in the recruiting process by a WSU coach, you're a booster. And, not surprisingly, there's a catch-all for booster status for anyone who has been involved in any way in promoting WSU's athletics program.

Based on the content of this post, we will have to investigate whether a violation has occurred and how it might affect the referenced recruit's eligibility should he ultimately end up a Wildcat.

Hmmm.... The plot thickens. Wooly could be a fan from another school trying to make trouble. I'm not sure what's worse, being a troll or being a totally uninformed fan. Either way.... :wall:

Got a chance to watch the team play a bit on Saturday, and I believe I saw Harding playing with them. I just watched for a few mins, but from what I saw, I like what he can bring. I don't think the coaches would bring him in to play the point, but to be the off-guard, but then again that is from 5 mins of watching. No matter which way we cut it, he is a scorer. He was the Kansas player of the year and has been touted as a hidden gem. http://247sports.com/Article/PG-Jerrick-Harding-a-Major-Sleeper-in-2016-Class-43505924, since we have an open spot, and he is a lefty who can drive and score, I'm all for bringing him in.

I don't think it was Jerrick that you saw. I'm not exactly sure who it might have been. It could have been an unofficial visit from one of next fall's group. Sometimes, kids just drop in for these rat ball games. Later in the summer you will see some NBA guys dropping in for some work. At any rate, Jerrick should be visiting soon. For obvious reasons, visits are not advertised. :coffee:

Having seen Jerrick in person now, I can say that I would love to see him in purple. He is as quick or quicker than anybody we have, he can score from anywhere on the floor, for a small guy he can get up on the rim, and he has a good handle on the ball. I'm not sure that he could beat out any of our guards in the rotation right now, but give him a year in the system and that could all change. He seemed to fit right in with all of our guys.

I'm totally sold on this young man. :thumb: :thumb:

Decision coming soon! :rockon: :nod: :nod: :rockon: :thumb: :thumb:

Why should we believe anything you say on this topic? First you said his highlight videos could be deceiving. Then Tal posted that he was in town and that he was impressed with his play. You told us that wasn't Jerrick and was another player (AKA Tal was full of crap). Then you post that you got to see him in person and that he is amazing. (AKA Tal wasn't full of crap and I am not in the know as much I as I would like to be)
But stayed tuned... Olds says a decision is coming.

Tal wasn't full of crap. Jerrick was supposed to be here that day. There were problems with his flight. It was rescheduled for Tuesday. You can believe what you want. It's all good. Jerrick's own tweet, at noon today, said he was about to make his decision. I just repeated it. Once again, you can believe what ever you want. I don't need your approval. :clap: :clap:

What is there to decide? His other offers are from Loyola, Coppin St, and Sam Houston St. And as far as I can tell his only visit was to Weber.
