Keep Coach Katz

Booster club and new posters here losing all credibility with this Katz push. I liked what SD said about both sides getting about what they expected out of the Katz 5 year contract. And yeah - the lack of an events center is the biggest hinderance to our program’s success. Not sure anyone could do more with less than Katz, but I’d say Orr and Nelsen have earned the right to consider their options at this point...

Technically, GAS said that but I think most frequently posters on this page agrees with the sentiment :kisswink: .

Now again, I think most of us on here are NOT opposed to giving Katz an extension. But that extension is based on merit (which, you could argue for OR against), but it's absolutely NOT on some negotiations conversation that was had half a decade ago (which still isn't confirmed).

If I were Orr/Nelsen, I'd *quietly* explore what kind of candidates are interested in the position and do their due diligence. If it's not the kind of candidate that they absolutely love, then Katz is the "status quo" that not a lot would oppose to having around until we find a successor

Sorry, mean you! :o

Sac St 81 Montana St 52 in one of most dominating Hornets Conference win's in a long time. Hornets have now won 15 games for only the 4rth time in Division1 era ( 3 of 4 have been under Coach Katz.) Hopefully they can clinch only the second ever year above .500 in Division 1 era on Saturday. Great work by the team last night. Football team was awesome from behind the bench.

Dominate game last night. Where did you sit?

BTW, here is the thread about this season’s games. Haven’t seen you talk about any of them yet. Which one is your favorite?

Watched online. I live 4 hours away. But will be there Sat. I come to 4 or 5 games a year and watch about 95% on line. I have even watched some several times on watch big sky.
The football team was super funny last night and brought a really good vibe to the game. And man did the Hornets play well.
Montana will be tough especially after losing a heart breaker last night. I watched the last two minutes. Big Sky is so balanced this year.
EWU vs N. Colorado will be interesting as well.
Go Hornets

I think I only have one post in that thread so I guess that means I haven't followed the team very closely either, right?

To be honest with you although I support Katz and want him back I do find this online push a tad bit desperate, but I understand where people are coming from.

What I do find unfortunate is that this is the second best team Katz has assembled in his tenure (and if the season ended today the team currently has a higher power rating than that great run during 2015) and he is possibly not coming back after it. This is what normally happens when you get a new AD on campus so it doesn't shock me.

Great to see Hornet Gym with nearly 1,200 tonight. Largest crowd in many years. And thinking back to 1988 when 2,400 were in attendance against Sonoma State back in the Division II years before the gym was down sized.

Congrats to the seniors and best of luck at PSU and in the Big Sky Tourney .

Aggie fan here. FWIW, I watched the Hornets this year and was impressed by their defense & balanced attack & Katz's positive demeanor.

Maybe AD Orr made his decision after last year? Anyway, the team doubled the Win total this year, and recruiting no picnic w the Nest & older facilities. He even had a monster year a while back.

If Orr is scalp hunting, has he seen the women's team record & 4 players early departures? I have no axe to grind with that coach, but also subtract out the first year or two off of his record here when he was coaching another coaches recruits.

If Orr has concerns, extend HC Katz's contract 2 years.

BTW, congrats on your Monster year in football.

Nope, just find it curious that now there is a vocal contingent on social media and on this board within the last couple of weeks from new posters. Where was this support the past few years, or a few months ago for that matter? I'd bet most of the folks donning the "Keep Katz" shirts and signs these last 2 home games have never been to the Nest before this week. But you know, Orr doesn't care because of his tweets or something.

Sucks to see the Hornets lose last night. Great crowd and atmosphere and had a solid opening 10 minutes, but then got dominated by the much more talented and athletic Griz lineup. Of course there was the patented desperation scramble that pulled the game close in the final minutes that fell short, as usual.

Interesting take on where you put this team compared to Katz' others and probably a topic worthy of its own thread. If this team had a good point guard I would agree with you. Unfortunately they don't so I have this group as Katz' 4th best. The team defense has been stellar and far and away the best ever under Katz which made up for a lot of its scoring woes.

For once I agree with a Aggie fan! I think that Coach Katz has done a excellent job recruiting and retaining student athletes who stay out of trouble, graduate and are a credit to the University.
I am also impressed by the number of his former players that still have strong ties to and support the program.
When athletes maintain ties and support programs after graduation it indicates they have been positively affected by their experience in the program. That leads directly back to the positive environment created by the coaching staff.
I admit that I don't follow basketball as closely as I do football & track and field but the women's program seems to have some issues. Losing players is never a good indicator, especially losing a high profile player like Hannah Friend in her senior year. The lose of four players seemed to take the sail from what looked like a promising year. They lost only lost one senior last year. Bunky's high water mark seemed to be his first couple of years with Craighead's recruits. His "system" doesn't seem to work as well with his own recruits. Not sure how seriously Orr will take this but there has to be a serious evaluation of what's going on with the women's program.

I agree with Mattman. This is one of the best teams Katz has assembled in his tenure. This team has already done so much better than past teams. As for the PG, Davis is only a sophomore and I see a lot of potential in him. The team has great chemistry and they feed off each other's energy.

What a GREAT night of support Saturday was. And it was great to see the Seniors honored for all the hard work. Thanks to everyone who participated in both. The Nest was electric on Saturday. Tough loss to a very good Montana team but still a very memorable night.

Why weren't 1,200 at every home game? Only way to move the rock is get more butts in seats every game!

Kings fans pay blindly to see a circus act year after year, why cant they find 1,200 people in SacTown to watch a DI basketball game?

My contacts claim Orr & the President want a "high profile" head coach. So Sac has big $$ to squander to overcome the Nest & outdated facilities? Makes no sense. Take the 'insight' with a grain of salt. No expert here, but the only potential 'high profile' coach I can think of that might be wooed is Damon Stoudemire at UOP. (He loses his dominating 6'5" guard and several other key players.)

I completely understand if Orr doesn't want to give Katz a 6-year deal - then make it 2, or 2 with an option for a 3rd year. Local coach, loves Sac, clean program.

Or does Orr have a friend in mind for the job?

Why not 1200 at every game? West Coast fickle, social media, etc. Most struggle to fill seats unless there is a TV game.

Good post. I don't see how a "high profile" coach is hired until an events center is built. Of course that all depends on how you define "high profile". Katz is 1 win away from a winning season, if he could snag 2 more wins then it makes it that much of a bad look for Orr to not extend his contract for at least a couple of seasons.

FWIW, Katz' current contract allowed him to coach his way into an extension every year as a 4th place finish or better in the BSC got him an extra year added on.

Regarding attendance, it's a legit counterpoint. The place was packed for almost every game in the '14-'15 season and it shouldn't be hard to fill up at 1200 seat venue. Katz' predecessor even had a couple seasons where finding a seat was a premium so there is having the Nest full for every game should absolutely be an expectation.

Glad to hear you had a fun and safe trip. :thumb:

I have no idea what their definition of "high profile" is but if it is a former NBA, I would highly caution against that. Sure Stoudamire has had one good season but just look at the recent success of guys like Terry Porter, Reggie Theus, Mark Price, Dunleavy Sr. and Donyell Marshall. Even guys like Mullin, Avery Johnson, and Danny Manning haven't done well at the high major level. I'm not sure some high profile coach is the answer, but they probably wouldn't be able to hire one of these types even if they wanted to.
