MARKETING DEPARTMENT

Weber State athletics has always been a tough sell. I blame the "BYU Factor" for this. Until the people of the Odgen area or Wildcat alumni, who are sports fans, separate their "faith" from cheering for a sports team that just happens to be a school that's affiliated with their "faith", Weber State athletics will always be under the Northern Utah radar. As I always told my dormmates at Promontory Tower who loved BYU-Provo sports, "According to BYU, you were either not smart enough or rich enough to attend their institution, but Weber State has given you an opportunity for a higher education. Plus, apart from football, we play the BYU-Provo in most every other sport. So stop cheering for BYU-Provo. Have some pride and cheer for YOUR school. Because win or lose ... it's still YOUR school."

I don't think you can place the blame of poor attendance on the BYU-Provo factor, there have been a lot of new people move into Northern Utah in the last 5 years. Many of these people are from California and couldn't care less about BYU-Provo. There is no "GOOD" excuse for not being able to have an average of at least 5,000 fans per game with the surrounding population base. In all honesty, it is a total joke that WSU can't average closer to 6,000 per game with the surrounding population base the way it is.

True True True

There is no real good excuse. I'm just a BYU-Provo hater. USU's doing really good with their attendance. Maybe it's just general apathy in the Utah metro-cities. There was a pretty weak showing at the BYU/Utah game I attended last month at the Huntsman Center. There were a lot of empty seats for what one would think to be the premier rivalry in the state.

An interesting note: I'm up here in Boise and the BSU Bronco men's basketball team has had really poor attendance this year regardless of their current first place conference standing and the silly success of their football team. :-/

And also the fact that we school them in basketball at home! 10-6 not bad.

the problem is the perception people have of weber state. People at work say i'm "cute" for liking weber state, or they just make fun of me. basically no one here has been to a game in years. To many, unfortunately, weber state is just a highschool-like college. They even call it Harrisville High. If only they knew how legit wsu hoops is and really what a good school Weber is.

Why in the world do people call it Harrison High?? That came from other schools, and people here do nothing to stop it. It really burns my hide that people say that. Let's all get active, and next time that we hand out schedule posters, or anything else, PLEASE HELP!! BTW those who have graduated from the school need to join the wildcat club and BUY TICKETS!!

Join the Wildcat Club, Buy tickets ...... and we gotta do what Appalachian State did to Michigan last season in football and do the same to those Utah Utes this coming September.

This isn't related to this thread but do we have a better chance at Hawaii or Utah?

My Wildcat Club membership optimistically forces me to say that we're gonna beat both of them. ;D

I think we have a better shot at Hawaii since they have a new coach, new program, and many of their good players from last year are now gone. Also, they are in a conference with Utah State!

U of Hawaii plays at Florida the week before they play us in Hawaii. So they have to fly from Hawaii to florida, play the gators, and then fly back to Hawaii and then play us.
Wildcats by 3

The Snow Bowl, the ski resort up there in Flagstaff, they are giving out 500 day ski passes on sat at the isu/nau game. They have 9 feet of snow and they are open til mid April.

That is a very good promotion!

They have to do something for attendance. For the game last night the Jacks could muster only 1700 fans. One of the biggest games of the year for them and they can't get 2k?!? What is wrong with their marketing dpt? Did they take a page out of someone elses book?

Hey that's not a very positive thing to say about our marketing dept. And since I'm a glass half full type of guy then I am "Positive" that our marketing dept. is a total joke. Well the bright side is that it can only get better because it can't possibly get any worse.
I hope that was something positive to say about marketing. ;D
