Not enough offensive diversity. That INt was only our third play all game where we tried a vertical route. Even if you don’t complete those balls with regularity, you gotta try them sometimes just to show that you’re willing. And even without that, you can’t give up the number of 3rd down (especially 3rd and long) conversions. Our defense is mortifying. Best needs a complete rethink on that side of the ball. Additionally, we need about 8 new players to transfer in to make that unit work. A couple DTs, a DE or two, and a full complement of new safeties. The guys we got aren’t capable.

Bringing some guys in for added competition wouldn't hurt. I wonder if they retain Eric Sanders. It doesn't seem like the defense has improved that much under his leadership.

I’d pass. Why we never thought Anthony James could play is a mystery. Maybe he just stunk it up in practice, but it’s very hard for me to believe he wasn’t good enough to be an impact guy. In fact, the only defensive transfer that saw the field was the LB from Boise State, and that was still very little on field time. If the defense is so complicated that new guys can’t learn, that ought to tell you enough to change up the scheme to something more simple.

It is weird. Only thing I can think of is we usually redshirt high school recruits. Maybe we redshirted the transfers to learn the system cause the coaches knew they wouldn't be fired after this year. Only thing I can think of and its kinda dumb.

Well, no surprise at the outcome and while the HC decision is on the back burner for some reason the weird lack of improvement on defense was summed up for me watching the play of #30. Not dissing the player, just an observation.

He came to Eastern as a highly touted DB and he showed real moments in the game. He's a RS Frosh so has had 2 years in the program and although made some plays, he gave up a couple of very big plays. It had a real HS feel to it. You can watch replays if you want. At least twice, he was in man where he allowed the WR to beat him outside for big plays knowing he didn't have help over the top. Why HS? In HS he could let a WR get on his hip and he had the make up speed to still make a play but after 2 years in the EWU scheme hasn't learned this isn't HS. IMO this is on coaching. Just what are they talking about in weekly game prep? DB's are going to get beat but he has all the talent necessary to be much better without much additional coaching. I enjoyed his energy and excitement out on the field that's why I noticed the late hip turns on those plays. Just one of the symptoms of Best's leadership. Can't support more years of that.
