The Bee ain't alone in hometown college screw-jobs.

My freaking hometown Lodi News-Sentinel will run some full-length feature story about Cal or Stanford, while UOP and Delta are lucky to rate a paragraph in one of those bogus "round-up" pieces.

I know this sounds crazy at first, but hear me out. What about Tom Abatemarco? His first run was disasterous. I know, I was a student at that time.

Here are some reasons it could work now though. At the time, the athletic department was a total mess and he came to a team that had been gutted. Colberg was the AD and Gerth was the president. Abatemarco couldn't even give out of state scholarships...the timing is much better now. The athletic department is in much better shape.

Abatemarco has stayed in this area for the past nine years and has cultivated relationships over that time and now knows this area. He's been in the WNBA, so he's still in basketball.

Perhaps the biggest reason? He's tight with the Maloofs and other big wigs in Sac...meaning he could pull in huge money for the program....

I know it sounds crazy, but what do you guys think?

And no, I'm not Coach T or related to him, or even a friend. I have never even met him...Just looking for opinions

Ain't gonna happen. He burned way too many bridges with department staff, especially those who are now senior management.

The more and more I think about it, I'm not comfortable with Katz or any other JC coach with less thank 4 years of DI experience as an assistant. We need someone with pedigree who knows exactly what a DI player looks like.

We need someone with DI recruiting experience and knows how travel routines work with teams and can schedule games with big time programs in the OOC schedule... Why aren't we talking more about Cameron Dollar?

Perhaps you should stop thinking too much about the next coach! I'm not going to disagree with the essence of your expectations of the next coach, but I think you are jumping way too far ahead of what's needed immediately. Given your criteria, then I assume you were not and are not pleased with the hiring of Marshall Sperbeck...because his resume mirrors Katz to a considerable degree (except that Katz does have D1 experience on his resume, and Sperbeck did not). I think Katz knows exactly "what a D1 player looks like" because he has molded talent at Delta that have gone on to D1 schools during his long and successful tenure there. I think what we really need is a head coach who can start by successfully recruiting locally (i.e., Northern California) -- something that Jenkins apparently refused to consider -- as well as successfully raise funds from the local community. As I've said before, there is no "get-up-to-speed" time for Katz in both these areas. As for scheduling games with big-time programs, there's no magic there -- what big-time program wouldn't want to play Sac State, given their woeful record?

Many big-time teams (Stanford, Marquette, Kansas State) scheduled us this year because it was an easy win...and they knew of our woeful record.

I agree, Katz is a great candidate. We don't need to waste time chasing the pedigree coaches of DI and their $750K checkbook.

Go local with a proven local person who will re-energize the program.

I'd rather get an up and comer with loyal ties than someone who is just padding their resume. Not that the Sac State gig offers much padding.

Obviously we will have to recruit with a gregarious passionate fun-to-play-for coach. That facility will need one slick salesman to get DI players to attend.

Why would you not want a Coach like Bill Evans? He has proven he can win in a tougher situation than even Sac State, save facilities. He has gotten talented players to go to Cedar City, UT and gotten them to graduate!! He is very familiar with the Big Sky, he even recruited Northern California. He is a Sacramento native. Bill Evans would give Sac State instant credibility throughout the West!! If Brian Katz is such a proud alum of Sac State how come not one of his kids D1 or otherwise have ever committed or attended Sac State?

Before the 06-07 season sac state had its best year ever in its DI era, so the program was headed in a positive direction, so there must have been some moderate success here. I would not be so quick to dismiss Thunderbird scraps. I wonder how many of the applicants have won an NCAA Division I conference championship and led their program to the NCAA tournament, while becoming the winningest coach in school history.

bball06,

You're assuming that Jenkins and his staff recruited the players at Delta. Given Jenkins' apparent disdain for recruiting locally, I would assume that he didn't even try to recruit the Delta players.

One of my points throughout this discussion is that, if Katz is hired as the next head coach, Sac State automatically becomes a potential destination for graduating senior players in Northern California....except, perhaps, for the phenoms like Drew Gordon from Mitty, or Brendan Lane from Rocklin or Chase Tapley from Sac High (both next year). Given Katz's experience in this area as well as the respect almost all the local high school and JC coaches have for him, Sac State would at least be part of the possibilities for these players. That would, indeed, be a breath of fresh air.

Would you care to explain how a guy nobody outside of SUU has ever heard of is going to bring Sac "instant credibility?" We'd do just as well by hiring John Volek to coach the hoops team, IMO.

(Please note EXTREME use of sarcasm in the last sentence.)

Me thinks this guy deserved an interview....

Cameron Dollar - this is the same guy that was suspended by the Pac 10 and NCAA for recruiting violations. I would interview him, but he would need to be head and shoulders above everyone else to be seriously considered.

Wow, really? Google'd it... Did he ever get disciplined?

Allegations lead to investigation of Huskies

Two NCAA investigators will be in eastern Washington Monday and Tuesday to discuss whether the University of Washington committed recruiting violations over the past four months after allegations were raised by three other Division I coaching staffs in the state, ESPN.com has learned.

Coaches at Gonzaga, Eastern Washington and Washington State confirmed that the NCAA would be on campus to talk about Washington and the Huskies' recruitment of nearby Clarkston High 6-foot-10 rising junior center Josh Heytfelt and a few other potential illegal contacts regarding players in the state. Heytfelt told ESPN.com that the NCAA also would make a house call to discuss a potential rules violation.

Lorenzo Romar calls the allegations being made by opposing coaches "unbelievable".

Washington coach Lorenzo Romar, who was hired in April from Saint Louis to replace the fired Bob Bender, was aware of the allegations but wouldn't comment on the specifics.

"This is unbelievable,'' Romar said Sunday of the allegations by opposing coaches.

Romar said he was unaware the NCAA and the other coaching staffs had been in contact with each other but he welcomed the NCAA to the state to hear his side of the story.

"I would pick them up and take them where they need to go,'' said Romar, although he obviously won't be in Spokane to greet the NCAA team.

The NCAA doesn't comment on ongoing investigations or on whether it is officially investigating a school or player.

Heytfelt told ESPN.com that Washington assistant Cameron Dollar was in Clarkston last week when he was working out, but Heytfelt declined to say whether Dollar watched him work out. Heytfelt said he would have no further comment.

The month of August is a quiet period, which means coaches cannot evaluate prospects but can initiate a phone call to the prospect once a week. Prospects can call coaches as many times as they want in a week. Recruits can make unofficial campus visits during August. But watching a player work out during a quiet period is a violation that could range from a warning to preventing the school from signing that player.

The other allegation in question was a phone call to the house of rising junior wing David Pendergraft of Brewster, Wash., who had already committed to Gonzaga. Pendergraft's father, Mike, told ESPN.com that Dollar called in August to see why mail was getting sent back to Washington. Calling a rising junior is prohibited under NCAA rules. Juniors can't receive phone calls from a school until March of their junior year.

"I was asleep when I got the call from Cameron Dollar,'' Mike Pendergraft said. "He knew David had committed to Gonzaga but he was just feeling me out to see how committed we were. I'm not sure why he called.''

The NCAA also called and left a message for Robert Lowden, coach of the Gary Payton Pinnacle All Stars Elite in Seattle, after it was told Washington had gone to practices in June -- a quiet period. Lowden told ESPN.com that he hadn't yet spoken to the NCAA but there were several schools, including Washington, that attended practices during quiet periods "viewing us when they shouldn't have been.'' The team practiced at Rainier Beach High School, home to rising 6-5 seniors Lodrick and Rodrick Stewart and 6-10 junior-to-be Chester Giles of Rainier Beach.

The twins told the Seattle Times on Sunday that they would sign with Washington, but a source close to the situation said the Stewarts were going to go in another direction, and Sunday night the twins announced they would go to USC. All of the Washington-area schools also were recruiting Giles.

The fourth allegation involves 2004 top-10 player 6-8 Marvin Williams of Bremerton, Wash. North Carolina assistant Doug Wojcik and Gonzaga assistant Billy Grier were at an open-gym workout with Dollar watching Williams July 31 when Dollar allegedly spent 45 minutes talking to Williams' mother, which isn't allowed. Sources said both staffs would be willing to tell the NCAA that they witnessed the Dollar-Williams conversation.

Marvin Williams told ESPN.com that he doesn't remember his mother being in the gym. "I remember the open gym, but not her being there,'' Williams said. Attempts to reach Williams' mother were unsuccessful.

Coaches from Gonzaga, Washington State, Eastern Washington and North Carolina weren't thrilled with Washington. Sources told ESPN.com that Washington State's Paul Graham and Eastern Washington's Ray Giacoletti expressed their dismay with Romar. Arizona State's Rob Evans tried to act as a peacemaker on the issue, trying to facilitate Romar and Graham to discuss the allegations. Evans, who is friends with both coaches, said he has no problems with Romar and isn't involved in making the allegations.

One head coach told ESPN.com that he was deeply concerned about the advantages Washington was getting over the summer by its alleged extra contacts. The state's coaches were going to express to the NCAA that something had to be done or they would also feel like they should receive extra contacts with area players. They also wanted Washington to be prohibited from signing players in question.

Romar is one of the most-respected coaches in the game, earning one of the five coaching spots on the Basketball Issues Committee a few years ago with Oregon's Ernie Kent, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, San Francisco's Phil Mathews and Kentucky's Tubby Smith. Dollar was a former player at UCLA when Romar was an assistant. Romar went on to coach at Pepperdine before Saint Louis, where he hired Dollar before getting the Washington job -- his alma mater.

SuperHornet,
Instant credibility comes from the fact that he has won over 200 DI games. How many have the other candidates won? He has been to the NCAA tourney as a head coach. How many candidates have done that? He has recruiting ties in both California and abroad. All the while being at one of the most under- resourced programs in the country, much like Sac State.
