New Staff?

I am anxious to know what members of Coach Mac's staff will remain and who will be leaving. Will Coach Smith be cleaning house? Does anyone have any predictions? Is Coach Smith going to be messing with the OC and QB Coach since Smith's offense sounds like it will be a little more of the spread? And finally, is Hoke going to be able to accomodate Smith's desires and wishes, or will he be bringing someone else into the mix?

It was interesting to me that Coach Smith mentioned in the press conference that he texts Dave Arslanian everyday. He played with Dave, and for Dave's father, and it appears that they are still really good friends. I wonder is Coach will bring in Arslanian as part of the new staff, possibly as OC? But then again, Dave has been out of football a long time, maybe to long. But I do think he lets Hammer go to Sac St so that he can bring in someone more familiar with his offensive schemes. :twocents:

Thanks for the reply Swebercat02! What about the QB coach? McGiven has some experience and he is familiar with the program, plus he may be looking for a job with the Memphis coach being fired. What about Beck? I am unaware of his strengths. Does anyone know if Beck would be a keeper for Smith's spread offense?

I don't know much about Beck, but I was pleased with the play of Hoke this year. McGiven would be a good choice for OC, and he ran the spread in Memphis this year, so he has experience running that kind of offense. But I don't know if Weber could offer him as much as he would make somewhere else. I generally like the position coaches from McBride's staff, but am hoping Coach Smith brings in someone new to run both the offense and defense.

From Weber website when Beck hired:

JASON BECK comes to Weber State after spending the 2008 season serving as a graduate assistant at Louisiana State where he assisted former BYU head coach, Gary Crowton, in running the Tiger offense. LSU set 10 offensive school records in 2008 and averaged 38.6 points per contest.

"Jason has a great feel for the game and has picked up some valuable experience the last three seasons," said McBride. "He has a calm, but intense, demeanor in his coaching style. He will be a great fit for our program."

Beck played at BYU where he was a backup for another Beck (no relation), John, who went on to become a draft pick for the Miami Dolphins. After graduating in 2006 with a degree in communications, he spent the two years as a graduate assistant at BYU for Coach Bronco Mendenhall where he coached the scout teams and broke down film on opponents. During his two seasons as a graduate assistant, the Cougars won two Mountain West Conference championships and were ranked first in the Conference in both total offense and scoring.

Before coming to BYU, Beck played two seasons at the College of the Canyons Cougars where he led his team to an undefeated season and a #1 ranking in 2004.

I hear John L. will be leaving for Arkansas tomorrow morning in order to say his goodbyes and pack up. Has the new coach made any decisions concerning who is staying? Is Coach Smith going to ask some razorbacks to make the trip back to Weber? C'mon someone has to know a little something, maybe.

I've heard, through the rumor mill, that Hammer is going to be retained. Also, I've heard that a number of assistants will be leaving. I'm not sure if it was their choice or the new coaches. Stack, Kamal, Chookus, And Swan are all gone. I'm not sure about the others. I've also heard that Coach Smith is talking with a number of potential replacements.

Man I hope he didn't let Coach Stack go, or it was Coach Stack that wanted to move on. The man is a true Wildcat and been important in keeping the gridiron club and alumni in touch with the program. I liked Kamal as well. He was pivotal in our Oklahoma recruiting and was very positive with the players. Cookus and Swan needed to leave the nest if they are ever going to get better. I wish them luck but am glad to get fresh blood into the defense.

He let Stack go, it was not Stack's plan according to a text he sent me. That is not good, he was the glue that could hold things together, and he was committed. Also, Dyson is gone, so put him on that list. Hammer retained over Cookus.....wow,...........wow.

There's a new sheriff in town...it's obvious now

I have been told Coach Hammer, along with the offensive line coach will be the only ones staying on board. I think this coach wants to be surrounded by coaches with the same intensity, personality, or whatever you want to call it.

Man, he must have somebody lined up for that TE coach because I think losing Coach Stack really hurts us on a public relations standpoint. I really enjoyed his weekly emails keeping everyone up to date. I hope he finds a good job for his family soon. Keeping Hammer on the other hand when he already had a job lined up in Sac. Meh, as long as he's not the OC.

I notice the Heaps thing is still on the board. Even seeing Jake Heaps' name in print makes me want to soil my pants - the kid isn't that good! Coming to Weber - not even a remote possibility. Swallowing his pride and overcoming his arrogance to play in the lowly FCS - ya, right. Plus, I hear Smith desires to bring in a QB coach from his days in Louisville. Weber will be just fine with the QB's we have. By the way, Hoke will be a senior. Who will be competing for the job and taking over after Hoke graduates?

Maraz or the guy who just got back from his mission. He played at Spanish Fork I believe.

I can't believe the line coach is staying. :wtf:

To me, keeping Hammer isn't a bad thing. He was the Associate Head Coach.

Stack was asked to stay, but he would continue doing what he was doing. He wanted to be a position coach and Smith wasn't about to do that. But Stack did have a spot if he wanted it. From what I understand, it was his choice to leave.

the O line coach is the worst, absolutely. you will see transfers starting once the spring semester starts.....Hammer is understandable, but c'mon.........the O line coach????? :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

My son came to the Weber State football camp this past summer at the urging of the recruiting coordinator. He is an o-line prospect and came there with three or four other prospects from our area. Coach McBride visited with them, was very cordial and introduced them to the o-line coach. The o-line coach wouldn't hardly give them the time of day. When my son and the other prospects from our area would perform drills, scrimmage one-on-one with d-line prospects, etc. the o-line coach would walk away and start talking to the local recruits, visit with other high school coaches, etc. Don't get me wrong; it's okay that perhaps he did not want these prospects as players.....but at least be cordial and let them know what you are thinking. They did drive five hours to be there. My son is a 6' 4" 300 lb. prospect who was first team all conference. He is a decent player and might be suited for a FCS school like Weber; some of the other prospects have received interest/offers from FCS schools as well. Do any of you have any insight? Is it common for Weber to only offer kids from Utah since in state scholarships cost less money than out of state scholarships? Just curious.............was kind of hoping John L. would bring in a different o-line coach.

That is definetey not cool, I would be furious if a coach ignored my player, I'm sorry to hear that, we were hoping that we could get a better O-Line coach as well. I dont really remember kids getting shunned for being out of state, Weber usually has butt loads of kids from outside of Utah.

No worries Wildcat; if it was meant to be it will/would happen. Just based on what I hear you Weber fans saying I am surprised that John L. kept the o-line coach on staff. Might be due to recruiting ties, etc. Anyway, just wanted to share our experience since it sounded like there was some dissention about the coach. Good luck next year; gotta admit I am kind of excited to see what happens to your program with John L. there. I think he will be very good for your program. I was a little hopeful that since he was late in the recruting war that there might be a chance for my kid; but sounds like the o-line coach probably has his recruits penciled in already.

Thanks for the support AVBronco, hopefully Smith can build on the program McBride has built, and Weber State football can take that next step and become an FCS power.

I wish your son good luck, hopefully he will get picked up by a great school with a great coach who can appreciate his talents.

Even though Cecil and Hammer are staying, it doesn't mean they will be doing their original jobs. Cecil might be in charge of film or football operations now. Who knows. Also, it isn't suprising that Coach Smith wants to make changes. That is usually the case when a new coach takes over.

Concerning the same positions, I wonder if Coach Smith will be taking on any individual responsibility himself? For example, OC., as I'm pretty sure he knows the in's and out's of a successful offense. Maybe Hammer might be kept on the offensive side to assist in the play calling as he is more familiar with the talent at Weber, and what that talent can do in certain situations.
