New Staff?

Concerning the same positions, I wonder if Coach Smith will be taking on any individual responsibility himself? For example, OC., as I'm pretty sure he knows the in's and out's of a successful offense. Maybe Hammer might be kept on the offensive side to assist in the play calling as he is more familiar with the talent at Weber, and what that talent can do in certain situations.

Is this the same coach that had Tuckett on the bench for most of the year? We're asking him for advice? How about the year before where Tafuna was on the bench till the end of the year.

I'm getting pretty anxious to hear something official about who the assistant coaches will be. How will this all affect recruiting?

Maybe that is why the OL coach and OC were kept on board. I imagine Smith realized he had to keep a couple of the past staff members on board to help recruit within the state. I know Hammer helped out McBride with quite a bit of the recruiting and I'm sure Hammer was in the process of recruiting this year. Who Smith will bring in as assistants, and how this will affect future recruiting will be interesting.

New Weber State football coach John L. Smith has yet to announce if he will retain offensive coordinator Matt Hammer, a school spokesman said this afternoon.

Two weeks ago, SacStateSports reported that Hammer interviewed for the same position at Sacramento State and the Odgen Standard-Examiner reported that Hammer had been offered the Hornets job by Coach Marshall Sperbeck.

Earlier this week, message board postings said that Hammer would stay with the Wildcats, but Weber State Sports Information Director Paul Grau said Smith has not announced any members of his staff.

“He has been interviewing a lot of people,” said Grau. “Then he was in Arkansas this week and interviewed some others back there.”

Hammer has been the offensive coordinator for three years at Weber State, where Ron McBride retired as head coach after this season. Smith was hired to succeed him this month.

Weber State (5-6) had the 24th-ranked offense in the Football Championship Subdivision under Hammer this season, averaging 415 yards a game with 46 touchdowns Last season, Weber’s had the seventh best FCS offense, averaging 440.82 a game with 34 touchdowns.

Per footballscoop Sperbeck has since interviewed 2 other candidates. Had Hammer accepted I would think the most recent interviews would not have happened, but who knows. There hasn’t been any info released from the Sac State AD or coaching staff about the status of the OC search.

24th ranked offense in the FCS... But only 6th ranked offense in the Big Sky (ahead of only ISU, UNC, and Sac). So good. But definitely has room improvement in the conference.

Im very surprised to hear that Hammer will be staying on staff.I really thought he was the weakest link on offense. From what I could tell, his play calling sucked! :dunce: I hope that IF he is indeed the OC, that John L will have a lot if influence over what he calls.

Is Swan staying or is he gone? He's making calls to players on behalf of Coach Smith, and then Coach Smith gets on the line..... :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

Is there any news concerning names of new staff coming on board? Are there any rumors going around? I haven't heard anything for a couple of weeks. Is there anything in the mix?

It is a horrible loss for the Wildcats that Coach Stack is not returning, but you have to give the guy credit...he was going to be offered the Operations Job (film, Gridiron, etc.), but he made it clear to John L. Smith that if he wasn't able to continue to coach the Tight Ends that he wasn't willing to stay. If your passion is the involvement with the kids and being on the field, a operations job is not going to make you happy. Kudos to Stack for recognizing that what makes football great for him is the players and former players.

Hammer was NOT offered the Sac State job. He did interview but was not offered. This was confirmed by a phone call to Coach Sperbeck...an interesting move by Hammer to tell people that he was offered the position. Maybe he thought it would help with his chances of staying if people thought he was a hot commodity elsewhere...

I really appreciate Coach Stack and everything he has done for the program. He took a PERSONAL interest in the development of a lot of key players in years past. He worked very closely with the players and the professors to keep everyone on the same page. He is a BIG loss, and I hope that the new coach is not letting the initial euphoria of being the new sheriff in town affect his overall selection process. His budget will be a little different than what he is used to, but he is sure to realize that by now before he offers coaching positions......GO WEBER.

School starts Monday! Has Smith hired anyone as of yet? Has anyone seen any new staff walking around campus? I would think Smith ought to have some of the staff hired, so he can tell the recruits Weber is somewhat stable. :wall:

All I have seen or heard is this:

"Smith expects to announce his finalized coaching staff by the end of this week or early next week"

Those are some measly performance bonuses. $10,000 for winning the national championship, $2,500 for each playoff win, $1,500 for winning the conference, and $1,000 for winning coach of the year. Win coach of the year and take home about $500, after taxes? And why is the women's basketball coach, who had never been a head coach, making $105K? That's only $25K less than what JLS makes, and only $20K less than what Bovee makes. Rahe making $275K a year seems fair.

Maybe Tal & Catcat should just start asking random guys on campus if they are new coaches.

Sounds like a small school in a small market to me. However, the Ord salary baffles me as well. That's absurd to pay her so much. She's unproven and I don't think the women's hoops squad even earns 100k in a season. Or in 10 seasons for that matter. Gotta love those state subsidies and student fees. Sounds like they are going to good use.

So does the lack of news on the assistant coaches mean that:
A) he heasn't found anyone who will work for such low pay
B) just hasn't been announced?
C) the new coaches still have bowl games?

I keep scouring the Standard Examiner for the job posting. I have an excellent resume,
I played JV high school and I am currently a volunteer position coach for a local little league team.
Im also unemployed and will pretty much take any pay.
HIRE ME PLEASE John L.

 Sign me up too! I'm getting tired of working at the gas station.

But seriously, although it must be a difficult thing compiling a staff when your financial resources are limited, I too am starting to get a little concerned with the lack of any news. And I'm really concerned with how all the turnover might effect recruiting.
