Playoff Chances

Who cares if Eastern looked better in Missoula...I'm not trying to argue Native, it just pisses me off that Eastern, a team we handily defeated is going to be in the playoffs. They also have two Big Sky loses, if Weber wins and MSU loses they can't finish above us in the conference standings and they got killed in their FBS game, while Weber was in both of theirs and should have won one. Just because they have a DII win over lowly whatever Oregon doesn't mean they should get in. In my eyes they are 6-3 while Weber is 6-4. Thats how the NCAA should look at them too.
The committee will look at more than wins and losses, and Eastern is ranked higher than Weber in both polls and in the GPI. And if Eastern and Weber both win Saturday, that isn't going to change, as a win in Flagstaff is going to look much better than a win at home vs a 4-6 Cal Poly team. You can argue that Eastern's lower division win shouldn't mean much, but in reality it means much more than Weber's close FBS losses. Weber's schedule put them in a hole before the season ever started. And apparently the athletic department hasn't learned anything from it, or just plain don't care. After all, its really just about money. And due to Weber's home attendance, in makes much more financial sense to play two FBS money games a year than to schedule two nonconference home games.

It pisses me off, too, and I hope the selection committee considers our head to head beat-down of EWU.

The facts are that the best possible record for EWU in 2009 is 7-3 in DI contests IF they win at Flagstaff this week, and our best possible finish is 7-4 DI. The DII contest should not and probably will not count one way of the other. Our 7-4 will be a better resume than EWU's 6-4.

But another fact is that EWU is ranked slightly ahead of Weber in virtually every poll and power rating. I do not like to hope that another Big Sky loses unless they are playing Weber, but it would enhance our chances for NAU to beat EWU this weekend. Even if we win and EWU loses, there is still a chance that a 9-2 Liberty (8-2 DI) will get that last at-large bid ahead of Weber.

Again, however, it is hard for me to conceive that the committee will withhold that second invitation from the second-most-powerful FCS conference in the nation.

Very good news!!! Northern Iowa, Montana St, Lafayette, and most importantly, Liberty, lost today. Behind Eastern Wash and Montana St, Liberty was Weber's main competition for an at large. I'm calling it: if Eastern Wash loses Weber is definitely in, no question. No way Liberty gets in over Weber now. And even if Eastern Wash wins, Weber has a chance with the N Iowa loss. Weber did what they needed to do, and they are getting the help they need. :D :D :D :D :D :D

Eastern up 35-20 at the half. Actually, if I was completely certain that Weber was still in with an Eastern win, I would like to see Eastern win because that would make 3 Sky teams in and a chance that Eastern and not Weber would head to Missoula for the second round.

Where's the chatter, fellas? A playoff bid is a real possibility, maybe a certainty. Am I the only loser with nothing else to do right now?

Until Sunday afternoon I am going to be sick to my stomach thinking about the selection show.

In a perfect world....both WSU and EWU will get at-large playoff bids on Sunday.

I fear we don't live in a perfect world. I expect either EWU or WSU will get left out in the cold.

NAU did their best to help Weber out today but they came up just short. NAU's offense was studendous (funny what a week and change in environment can do) today but four big turnovers - a few of which were in the red zone - a pick six by EWU's defense, a missed field goal by NAU and a porous defense sealed the deal.

NAU played two truly bad halves of football all year (2nd @ Sacramento and 2nd at Ogden) yet still ended up under .500. Football's a funny sport.

Anyway, I hope to see WSU's name pop up tomorrow. If not, no reason at all for Weber's team or fans to hang their heads. You always have a good basketball program to support up there too.

Weber's scheduling two FBS teams on the road, as NAU did, certainly puts them in a situation with little or no room for error. Frankly, I love scheduling one FBS school to get some in-state competition/media coverage but I hate scheduling two FBS games. At that point it's strictly a money/survival thing for the athletic department to stay afloat. Lousy, stinking Arizona state government cutting funding *bleepity, bleeping, bleep*

Til later.

Thanks for the post, MT Jack. What a fantastic NAU-EWU game on Big Sky TV!!! The Lumberjacks have a great offense!

Because of the other losses around the country, I think the Big Sky gets three teams in this year. UNI and Colgate are really the only competition for that last at-large, and neither stacks up to Weber OR Eastern Washington.

Native -

Thanks. I more often than not tend to root for the other Big Sky teams. A small, vocal percentage of each team's fanbase often makes it hard to do at times but it helps the conference to be competitive as a whole.

If you're in San Diego, as your location says, and you're looking for something to do next Saturday you can give a little love to your Big Sky Conference brethren and support the Lumberjacks mens basketball team. THey play at San Diego State University at 4 pm.

Wish I was there but I'll be hoping to have radio coverage in N. Arizona from where I'm spending Thanksgiving weekend with family.

By they way, WSU fans, I'm stoked that basketball season is upon us.

Not if the Committee pays attention to the relative strength of the BSC. If so, you're in. If the West continues to be disrespected, you're not. It's up to one of us to give 'em a swift kick this year.

Amen,

Good luck to the Griz, Eagles, and especially our Wildcat's with a chance for a National Championship!

I agree with Da Griz, the West continues to get no respect, BUT TODAY will be an opportunity to either confirm or deny my suspicions.

Good luck to The Griz in the playoffs...despite everything between WSU and UM, represent and go kick some butt in the playoffs. If common sense prevails, WSU will be in the playoffs also :)
