PLAYOFF PICTURE

It's early, but what is everyone's thoughts on the playoff picture.

If we win out, we are no worse than the 3 seed, possibly the 2, depending on how the committee sees us compared to EIU. I think NDSU is the clear #1, although I think they lose this weekend, so who knows if that would affect their seeding at all.

If we drop one, we still win the auto bid and would probably be a 5-8 seed.

Drop 2, which wont happen, and we are playing on Thanksgiving weekend....

If we are seeded and NAU (they could receive a seed if they win out) is not, I think we would probably see a 2nd round game against NAU. I think either MSU or Montana will be going to NDSU in the 2nd round. The Griz have a shot at a seed if they win out...

2 teams I don't want us to face are Sam Houston and SELA, they both run a type of offense, with mobile QB's that we can't seem to stop. They face each other this week, winner probably wins the autobid and a top 4 seed, loser probably drops to a 1st round game...

No way in hell we drop one. 3 seed if NDSU and E. Ill. win out. NDSU has to put 3-4 balls on the carpet for Youngstown to win. See them in the National Championship game.

Playoff picture for me:

Here is the most recent SN playoff projection, although pretty meaningless at this point.

Damnit, that's the second or third link fail I've had the past couple of days.

I don't know about 3-4 turnovers... NDSU's odds weakened when they lost their all-world LB Grant Olson for the rest of the year to an MCL tear. I think their all-world CB Marcus Williams is also hurt, not sure if he's still playing.

I like your playoff picture though... this year's got that 2010 kind of feeling going on.... start off 2-2, then go on a tear, finding any and all ways to win. :thumb:

Forgot about the NDSU LB. Correction 2-3 TO's ;-)

IMO, we are better than 2010. Beating teams we should beat by bigger margins, better adjustments at half, more "irresistible force" (MSU game is good example) and we are deeper with more players contributing to the key starters efforts. The seeding will pay dividends with a week off and home game to follow. Get it done!

I know the team isn't concerned about anything past Saturday afternoon, and frankly, that's where my head is at as well.

Cal Poly is a terrific team looking to have a winning season. Had a couple of breaks broken in their favor, they'd be well into the playoff mix. This is darn near a toss-up game that will require the kind of execution we got last week. I'm hoping we don't have an emotional let-down for this one, because we really need to be all-in to beat this Cal Poly team.

This Cal Poly team is very similar to EWU in 2011. I believe we needed to beat CP and ISU to have a winning record in what was a very rough season. This CP team will give us their best shot and the TO is tremendously difficult to prepare for. I think it'll take our best effort to win this game.

We need to win the toss, elect to receive, and put a lot of points on the board early. Teams like Cal Poly have a tough time catching up, but if they are in the game, they tend to wear teams down in the 2nd half...

I understand the point, but disagree on the method. We were taking the ball on winning coin tosses to start the year, and it was causing us problems. Over the last few games, we've been electing to defer and it seems to have helped us on both sides of the ball. At the very least, there's some luck at play. Since SUU (our first game in which we kicked off to open), we've been playing very well. Before that, we had some pretty mediocre efforts.

Than why post on this topic?

There are a couple other threads where you can chime in about how good CP is.

Suspect the coaches are laser focused on this week and will prepare the team appropriately. They have all season. Cal Poly will give an adequate test of how far we've come against the run, but there is no way they slow this juggernaut down... too many weapons and balance.

When you suit up, will pay attention to where your head is at.... IMO living in "hopeville" is a loser limp. Either people have two eyes to see the obvious about this team (no Inferno colored glassed here) or they wax poetic about how good the opposition is week after week in apprehension of disaster. I know where I stand.

Personally, if we can find a way to win out, then I'd like to see us get the #4 seed if NDSU and EIU both also win out. We're unlikely to get the #2, so I'd rather see us in the EIU side of the bracket to set up a potential show-down with Fargo in Frisco.

Who would be #3?

Uh, I think there is a disconnect here. The 3 seed is on the side of the bracket as the 2 seed. The 1, 4, and 5 seeds are on the same side. The 4 and 5 seeds would meet in the quarters if they both win their openers.

Assuming the BiSons get the 1 seed, we'd want to be on the 2/3 side of the bracket.

Yep, you're right. For some reason I was thinking 1 and 3 and 2 and 4 are on the same side of the brackets. I guess it's been a while since I've actually looked at them. Either way, I think the #2 seed is unlikely for us at this point unless we win out and Jacksonville State upsets EIU this Saturday.

I was looking at fcsfans.com today, and as of right now we're sitting at #4 under the new system the playoff committee is supposedly using this year.

As of right now:

1 NDSU
2 EIU
3 SELA
4 EWU
5 Nova
6 Towson
7 McNeese St
8 UNI
9 Coastal Carolina
10 Maine

Maybe SELA will beat Sam Houston this Saturday. That'd help.

I hope YSU beats the Bizons this Saturday, but pretty unlikely. Even if they do, I suspect that it won't be enough to displace them from being a top 3 seed.

HaHa, NDSU will not be unseated from the #1 spot regardless of how much they might lose by, that is a big IF they lose.
