I am still mad as hell about Friday night. What really is the point of tonight's game?

I am not excited at all to see us play a crap low level team with no interior presence.

Awsome, I wonder which PC player Weber will turn into a Collett?
Sounds like there are quite a few "fans" who need to step away from the ledge a little bit. It's early in the season with a VERY young team. Relax, come to the games and cheer for the Cat's. They are young and will get better. WSU has great coaches and great talent. I am excited for this season but I realize there will be some pitfalls. I love where this program is and what type of kids Randy Rahe brings to Ogden.
GO WILDCATS!!!!!

I'll be at the game, cheering the 'cats on against an inferior opponent, like I have for 30 - some odd years now. I hope it doesn't take 30 years for Weber to not fold at the sight of a zone or press, or become more competitive against USU & BYU.

Bringing in is Coach Rahe's strength; playing them in their positions of strength & coaching flexibly (with adjustments when needed) come game time is Coach Rahe's glaring weakness !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I'm not just talking about Fri night!!!

I would suggest "Olds-" & "Larry--" bring in an extra big thermos of the purple Kool-Ade to share tonight! :)

Anybody know if big sky tv will be showing the game? Or will I just have to stream KLO radio?

Time to get over the USU loss, destroy these guys and move on! Go Cats!

Migra...you and Sir Velo should be able to watch the games on Big Sky TV. From what I understand, all regular season home games are available. You might need to email Bovee to remind him to turn on the stream and have audio going though.

Good lard! What did I say that put a bee in your bonnet. You guys need to take a few minutes to get the knot out of your water walkers, and then rethink some of the things you are saying. There seems to be a larger faction following big chief Little Weapon. Calm down, take a deep breath, and things will all work themselves out. The sun will come up tomorrow. The sky is not falling.

Olds I had an extra ticket on Friday and was going to get a hold of you to come up. Be glad you were at the womens game. Had you been there you may have bee in your bonnet too.

I guess what Olds is saying is that we should be happy winning our conference and hoping for a play in game or 16th seed. I guess if that's our goal then all is good. I'd just like to see us win a couple of games in state and out of conference. I believe we should have higher aspirations. Can't get over the fact that Gonzaga used to be in the BSC. I look at their success and wonder why not Weber State?

Truth is, I was very upset about it as well. I have always been frustrated by those who are stubborn and inflexible. I think there is a lot of that in our coaching staff. I'm hoping that they are seeing it and want to change also.

Let's face it, we were spoiled by Ron A. He had a defense/offense for every situation and didn't hesitate to make in game adjustments. His biggest limitation was recruiting. He didn't get near the athletes we have now. Our coaches could learn a lot, if they would just bring him around for a Q and A once in a while. I know that wont happen, they are much too proud.

We are just way too predictable right now. It might be that they just have not implemented everything yet, I don't know. I would at least like to see them give the appearance of trying something new. A few years back they did change the way they play man D on the perimeter and it helped us become one of the best defensive teams in the country. Now, everybody and their kid brother is prepared for it. :coffee:

Nope, no audio tonight. Hope they get it figured out by Friday.

:wall:

That was a brutal first half. That was a lot of missed layups and dunks. There was almost nothing good about that half of play. The second half was the team we have come to know, and love.

We knew, coming into this season, that it would be a bit of a learning curve, but I sure didn't expect this much inconsistency. :wall:

NAIA team..... we are suppose to win and win big! Presentation was over matched, but I was impressed by their heart! They didn't quit and for a second .... just a second, I was worried.

True test starts on Friday. Illinois State has some size and will test our bigs. Turnovers are still a problem and Jeremy Senglin is still a shoot first, loves to dribble PG. I'd like to see Hunter get more playing time. How many assist does Senglin have this season?

On a good note, Hajek hasn't missed a shot this season from the field!

Well, to be quite frank Mycats, I think that is our goal this year. To move the NCAA tournament seeding needle for a Big Sky team takes more than one year. I've had a definite feeling from the start of this season that this year is as much about next year -- and the year after that, etc -- than it is about this year alone.

We seem to have recruited the weapons to turn the program into a juggarnaut for a few seasons. We seem to have recruited players who, with their play over a few seasons, can move the NCAA needle to a 14th seed (I don't think a Big Sky team can dream of a higher seeding than that anymore). But, to do that takes domination. It takes solid preseason play and then complete supremacy of the Big Sky. It takes a team and program that starts adding to its reputation. We're just not there -- yet. We have too many new faces, we have no identifiable leader, we do not know how to play defense as a group, we lost too much firepower and experience from last year (Trez and Berry were monsters, did you seriously think we had "kids" who were ready for their roles?), and we just haven't figured out how to play well together on both sides of the ball.

This year is definitely about growth. So if you're expecting a whole lot more, fine on you -- but you're going to be disappointed. We're going to have a huge fight to just come out of the Sky and get that 16th seed. Myself, I'm going to sit back, endure some of the growing pains and watch these kids get better. I do have my issues with Rahe, but one of the things I greatly respect is that he knows how to build players and teams. And we're just beginning a serious building project -- these are the best building blocks I've seen since I got season tickets in 2000.

On the positive side, I am seeing the results of a lot of player development. Hajek, Bolomboy, and Hill have improved dramatically. By committee, they have more than replaced Tresnak. We are still a little hit and miss on replacing Berry. We need to keep in mind that Senglin and Gittens are both just 2nd year guys. We can probably expect more inconsistency this season from them. :coffee:

I mostly agree with what you are saying Utahpirate. It does take time to gel as a team.

However, part of the reason young teams bring in JC kids is for their leadership, discipline and poise. We essentially traded away Royce Williams who had these attributes (to a degree) to help make room for Golden and Johnson-Coston. Our two JC kids don't seem to be real be discipline and poised, even when it comes to playing the stellar talent we saw last night.

Hunter is one of the biggest surprises we have had in a while. Who would have thought on signing day a year ago that he would be the Frosh getting the most time and making the biggest impact?

I think a 10-13 seed is possible for the Big Sky champ. But it takes a few big wins out of conference and essentially running the table in conference. Any loss in conference is considered a bad loss. This team has that potential long term. We see flashes of an elite team, but we also see flashes of a careless undiscpline team too. I think that is the part that is worrying many of us. We usually don't see teams that are careless with the basketball from Randy.

Pirate,
I get and respect your comments. As I stated in my prior post, if that's your aspirations for the team then thats fine.
I dont agree that we're starting a serious building project. when you've been the coach of a team for 9 years its not about starting a building project. Its about building on what you already have in place. There are a lot of programs that get younger talent every year. They don't start over, they reload. I think the fascination with getting better at the end of the year is a little confusing. I'm struggling to figure out when are we going to start the year off strong and finish even stronger! What's missing from our program that we seem to come up short in OOC and In state play and then we rally around getting better in conference play? Are we really getting better or is the competition not as strong?
I can't deny that the program is meeting expectations. I'm very excited about that. My question is when is it time to increase those expectations? Its something thats easy to do! How about next year the expectation should be to win our conference AND beat either BYU or USU? Maybe in 2016 season to win the conference AND beat BYU AND USU! What I'm saying is when do we raise expectations and how high ?

:thumb:  I thoroughly agree!!

Of course, I'd like to see the Cats do really well this season, and potentially win the Big Sky. I feel we have the talent, but there are a number of factors hurting the Cats. Consistency is a major issue. You could tell, during the first half, that the Cats were really struggling to get into a sort of rhythm. They were playing like they were still in Logan. Thankfully in the second half the Cats started getting into a better rhythm and played a lot better. The Cats are suffering through some shooting woes, which hopefully were worked out of their system last night. Golden's shots looked great, they just weren't falling. Also, turnovers were killing the Cats. It is almost like they are pushing themselves, instead of allowing the game to come to them. Senglin, it seemed, was willing the ball to go into the net, instead of just playing the game and letting it come to him. I agree, he does need to see the floor better and make the extra pass instead of trying to take it to the hoop every time. I like a pass first guard, and love what Hunter brings to the floor, but once Senglin gets into his groove, watch out. Also, I'd like to see Rahe play Hajek, Bolomboy, and Hill more often. I still worry about Hajek, but one thing he does bring to the team is the ability to play with his back to the basket and toughness. He is working off the rust. Maybe he will end up really shocking us. He is a big body and does have a nice hook like shot. He doesn't have moves like Tres, but he does have the skill to play with his back towards the basket, which is something the Cats need. Bolomboy is very timid on offense still, but it is coming. Like most of our players he seems to be pushing it rather than just letting the game come to him.

   I think the problem is we've become satisfied with just winning our conference. The program is positioned to lose in state, win our conference and lose in the first round of the tourney. Right now at Weber, thats a very successful year! As we improve our talent and everyone seems to believe that happening, I feel we should aspire to do more!

As for expectations...I think that we should always expect to beat in state teams at the Dee, and to play them tough on the road. Only way to get respect is to earn it. Here in Utah, if you want more fans and people supporting your program, you've got to win it by beating the in state programs. Until you win consistently, there won't be any respect for the program. One thing the Cats did for the first 40 years of the program was to beat the in state school and to always play them tough. The last 10 years has been tough. Weber only has a handful of wins over the big three (none against BYU). That is one aspect of our program that is greatly missed. First step is protecting our home court. The loss against USU hurts and we will be reminded of it for years to come. That is what sucks the most. Being reminded constantly of how we can't beat our in state foes.

It would be cool if we looked at other teams results before we limit what we can do as a team. We joked on this forum that there was no way Stew could bring his team together due to all the lost talent and the famous chemistry issues. Not only have they rebuilded their program they're doing it and winning at the same time. look at the number of Freshman and JUCO's they brought in to their program! Don't they need time to gel? The guys need time to play together! Getting tired of all the excuses! We need to raise the bar and quit being satisfied with getting better after out of conference play. The program shouldn't be happy with less than two wins this weekend!
