Wow, arguing over online classes. Ha!! How pathetic. Guns, don't you have some washing to do? Aren't you suppose to be washing our teams jerseys and cups?

Anyway, I feel we are growing as a team. We lost a lot from last years team. Three starters! Yes, we know about Tres and Berry, but losing Richardson was a major loss as well. He was our best defenders and a senior leader. You can tell we miss him. That is a factor.

Barney, wrong guy! I also didn't think we were arguing.
The two starters that came back this year was the BSC Freshman and Defensive Player of the year! What will the excuse be next year if all of our starters are back ? Students aren't cheering loud enough? We are starting 3 juniors and two Sophomores. Other teams have a lot less experience than Weber!

How many starters did USU have back? Will the excuses ever end!

you mean 2 Juniors, 3 Sophomore's (1 of which a jc who hasn't played D-1 until last week)

Still not an excuse at all. The reason we are so young is because the coaches completely struck out on an entire recruiting class of 3 who would all be Seniors right now.

you're right! my apologies, Hill is a redshirt Sophomore! but has been in the program for his 3rd year! i wasnt here then, but wasnt that suppose to be a very strong class? what happened?

Wow! What happened to this board??? Gotta love the increase in participation. I login before work to make a comment -- and now at work just to take a break -- and there's been so much discussion. What a great sign for everyone's enthusiasm.

Just one note to what Webergrad02 said in response to my early post. It's a rare JC kid that can come in and lead right away. JC programs are infamous for being locations for kids whose grades weren't good enough for D-1 (for the talented ones) or whose play wasn't good enough for D-1. Teams tend to play sloppy and the biggest knock on JC programs is how undisciplined most of the players are. That and the fact that they don't play tough defensively.

I think you can turn JC kids into solid contributors, but I think they rarely bring discipline, leadership and poise. Those traits still need to be developed. I actually think that Golden might have some of those characteristics. But make no mistake, he is just getting used to the quicker pace of the D1 game and the fact that most teams play defense really hard -- making getting shots more difficult. Plus, he's now also expected to play defensive really hard too. He's going to have to get comfortable before he can lead.

Just on other thing -- college programs tend to ebb and flow. Teams are built and then graduate. Then they need to be rebuilt (unless you're Kentucky or Duke etc). We've had some good players recently and didn't get the job done to the degree I think we could have. But we're definitely reloading right now. I'm not satisfied with a Big Sky championship and 16 seed. But I think any journey for more than that unfortunately has to start over every now and then for a program like ours. This is a new start for us from my perspective. And like I've noted, I'm enjoying watching it happen (although I do, I promise, have my current frustrations and am trying not to drink the purple Kool-Aid).

Carry on! Love all the opinions and discussion!

I think that Randy has brought in rather disciplined JC kids in the past. Obviously Bamforth is a fantastic example of coming in with poise and leadership. Berry & Mook were also poised and leaders. (they both sat for a year) I think Golden is further along than Johnson-Coston.

History lesson for youngguns about the class that is supposed to be seniors. We had two guards Mike Brown and Gelaun Wheelright. Both played as freshman, Wheelright more so than Brown. Wheels showed flashes of brilliance but he also free-lanced and played outside of the system. Shai Fields was a guard/wing with huge potential too. He redshirted but quit going to class and got the boot from the team before conference play started that year. Brown transferred after the season to a bible school to pursue becoming a pastor. Wheels played as a sophomore but was still reckless with the ball. It was fun to watch coach Rahes facial expressions and body language while Gelaun handled the ball. He was kind of a nervous wreck. Gelaun was often in the dog house as a sophomore. He worked really hard the Summer between his sophomore and Junior years. He probably worked the hardest of any of the players on the roster. In the Fall, shortly after school started, it was announced that he was transferring.

I am not sure that this class transferring out has made us that much worse. Gittens is better than Fields and Senglin is better than Wheels. I am not sure that those two really would have been great leaders. I look more to Royces transfer as effecting our leadership.

Berry & Mook were not JC transfers. Both had 3 yrs in the program, and the all important yr to adjust before playing. Bamforth had 3 years with us as well which really helped.

Session, Noble, Bradford, Zaid, Williams, never panned out.

Hughey worked out pretty good.

So I saw somethings that I did like last night but the main thing was that we seemed to have a better plan to attack a zone. Like I said after the USU game the easiest way to break a zone is to get the ball to the FT line. Last night our guards actually passed the ball to the 4s at the FT line and Hill got a few assists that way 2 to Joel and one to Richaud for a 3. Colston got one to Hajek and should have had at least 2 more to Joel if he would have made a pass that Joel have to jump to get a pass instead of to his feet or knees. I watched Sunday night Carolina pick a zone a part and their post had 20 plus against that team. The 4 from UT had 8 assists against a zone by getting it at the FT line.

It doesn't matter if you are playing a D1 or an NAIA school if you get the ball to the FT line with the pass or the dribble you can break a zone with ease. You have to have willing passer that are strong with the ball. Hopefully we can keep it going throughout the season.

Transferring down you may not have to sit out a year. Transferring up, or lateral, unless it's a JC, you almost always sit out a year. anyway, that is how I understand it. :coffee:

Excellent post and accurate! Now if we can get our to pg to think pass first versus shooting we'll be ok! I have to chug a beer every time Senglin gets a charge! Makes it hard to watch a whole game!
