QB Situation going forward....

It's going to be interesting to see what Baldwin does with our QB playing time for the remainder of the year. Jordan played great and I believe Baldwin will continue to let him start. However, anybody with a pair of eyes saw what I saw out of Hennessey yesterday. He didn't look ANYTHING like a freshman. He was in complete command out there and what is even more impressive is that he stepped in off the bench cold, and was able to come in like he had been playing the whole game. Hennessey's mobility in the pocket is a gift. Not all QB's have that kind of a presence in the pocket. When you have that kind of mobility, it allows our receivers to make opposing DB's and Safeties look very bad. My guess is that Baldwin will continue to let Hennessey come in and play at times throughout the year, especially if we need a jump-start on offense in one of our future games. In my opinion, Hennessey needs to continue to get snaps in some way, shape or form. Oregon had no answer for him when he was in there. It was fun watching those NFL caliber Oregon tackles and defensive ends TRY to chase him down. I'm sure Baldwin will figure it out. Jordan and Reilly are both exceptional players and I'm very excited to see what happens next......

go eags!

I was very impressed with both of them. West played very well and based on what I saw I would say he has improved significantly since last fall. He can make all the throws in this offense and seemed a little more accurate than what I remember him being last season. RH played phenomenally coming off the bench cold against a top 10 team. He was very mobile in the pocket and was able to make plays with both his arm and his legs. What I was particularly surprised by was how in command of the offense he seemed to be right off the bat. The audible on the goal line comes to mind. For now, I think you have to go with the upperclassman. Based on his performance, there's nothing that would make me think that he's not going to be the starter next saturday against UNI. I also have no doubt that RH is going to have his time. He'll be the starter for at least 2 years of his time here, and if Gubrud is neck and neck with him as some on here have suggested the future looks very bright for EWU.

The program is in very good hands, that's for sure. Man, I remember the days of Chris Peerboom (no offense) as our backup. We've come a long way.

I think both appear to be very solid QB's, with Reilly showing a bit more mobility. I think West will continue to start, and didn't do anything to deserve to be benched. I thought they looked pretty even overall. I think our line makes a big difference. If they were struggling with pass protection, I think Reilly might be the QB to lean on. But with the pocket they were able to create against an experienced front 7 of the Ducks, I think the QB's will have a lot of time to pass the ball against most of the FCS teams they face this year.

I do hope we can get the running game going a bit more against our FCS opponents!

Both QB's form, poise, and presence in that moment was EXCEPTIONAL, no one could possibly complain about those 2 leading excellent touch down drives, amazing throws (1 BIG error roughly each, JW missed a couple easy screens) and ability to run an offense in a massively loud stadium...

I am pumped for some point this year.

The corollary to having an OL that can protect is having WR's that can't be covered. :D It might have benefited West to sit and watch the last quarter, sometimes it solidifies what you learn to get some distance in real time and see the field. Looking forward to the UNI game and building on the results of last weekend.

I'm all in on Hennessy. The man popped off the screen and looked like a much more natural talent than West.

He looked poised. Will say, he had nearly three quarters to watch what Oregon was doing, starting the game and getting the "feel" is a lot harder. Nice thing is he was ready to get in there. Eags are blessed with talent at the position and a staff that knows how to coach them up.

The funny thing about this is that of the four QB's that played in Saturday's game - the three best are EWU products. Think about it - we just saw QB1 (had he not transferred), QB2, and QB3 ball out on a national stage. All those guys are Beau Baldwin/Zach Hill products. Screw Scott Frost, he didn't do that much with Vernon in 2 frickin' weeks.

As for any QB controversy, I don't think there is any. West certainly played well enough to maintain his starting spot. I mean, come on. He looked good. As for Hennessey...I was not surprised one bit. When he had to go in for West, I just knew some good things were going to happen because I have been following him since High School. He was just out there having fun and making it look easy - dude was ballin'.

I loved what West was able to do against the Ducks. He should continue to start in my opinion as long as we win. One thing that stood out to me was that Jordan had 3 carries for 1 yard (I believe one of those was a sack), and Hennessey had 3 carries for 20 yards. So what does that mean to me? It means that I LOVE the fact that Hennessey can take off and pick up the first down with his legs on 3rd down and 8 like VA used to do. This drives defenses crazy when all of the WR's are covered. It extends drives which is soooo important. Our O-line should continue to give Jordan good pockets to throw from so "needing mobility at QB" might not seem like a pressing need. However, I believe there will come a point in a big game this year when we need a QB to use his legs to take off and pick up the first down. Love both these guys and I think it's a great thing for the eags that we're even having this conversation.

go eags!

If West won the job, he certainly didn't do anything to lose that position. I was very impressed with both guys. What's interesting is that Hennessy largely went against Oregon's dime package... and actually had a lot of success throwing into it. West saw more of Oregon's base and occasional pressure.

One thing I'd tell Hennessy, and I'm sure the coaches are, is that he needs to turn the ball upfield more. I realize that we were playing catchup once he entered the game and his hand was forced, but there were some plays where Oregon's defensive front parted like the Red Sea and he chose to throw anyway.

Obviously, this is a high-class problem we're facing. It's nice to choose between two competent and capable QBs.

I agree totally about Eastern's QBs being 1, 2, and 3 on the field. Our player development at that position is amazing.

I was at the game and I could not have been more impressed with the Eagles. I sat in an Oregon season ticket section and everyone thought they'd leave by halftime but it was a entertaining shoot out throughout.

As far as the QB's go, I could not believe the windows the receivers made them and the crisp spirals/accuracy from both QB's was just fun to watch at an end zone angle. Zak Hill has done a great job and has both these QB's stand strong in the pocket but Hennessey seems to have a knack to sense pressure and continue plays.

I just have to stress how well the line blocked and how well the two QB's stood in the pocket and executed the short pass game. It was so fun to watch. Wherever the QB situation goes, we'll be fine. Hope to see Hennessey still get a lot of game reps. Fun game to go to.

Hennessy's mobility was a huge factor in our ability to move the ball. It also is a closer match to the play style we've had with VA over the last 3 seasons. Hennessy has the ability to extend plays and the upfield presence to make plays even under extreme pressure. West's arm was fine, as were most his decisions, but he looked limited IMO on his ability to create plays with his movement.

I don't think we will see Hennessy on the sidelines for long. :coffee:

I think that both Hennessey and West have the skill sets necessary to lead the offense well. However, Hennessey outperformed West during the Oregon game. I've watched rewatched the game and Reilly's highlights and I think I know why.

West is accurate. Very accurate. However, he doesn't take risks. You see him holding onto the ball longer and passing to receivers that have a little more space to work. That puts him in sticky situations when Oregon is putting up good coverage.

Hennessey was a little less accurate, but took more risks. He trusted his receivers to do the job and they did just that. We have a receiving corps that can beat secondaries and make tough catches or beat tight coverage and it made Hennessey shine. That combined with Hennessey's mobility looked very good.

If West wants to keep the position, he needs to shake the jitters and stop worrying (as much) about an interception. Naturally, we don't want to turn over the ball, but we are a team that is carried on guts. West needs to trust his receivers to make the plays and he will also shine.
