Hey all,
Thought you might be interested to know this guy
http://depaul.scout.com/a.z?s=430&p=8&c=1&nid=1920932
was in town for the Big Sky tourney and is being recruited by the coaching staff. I got a chance to introduce myself after the big win and he seemed excited about PSU. He said he is being recruited by a number of programs including this year's mid-major darling, Drake. Bone obviously can't talk about recruits but he would seem to fill the need for an athletic wingman that Bone has been talking about. The need is even greater with the more and more likely loss of justynn Hammond.

What JC is he attending? Is Jones not athletic?

As far as I can see, the Viks will likely go with Nelson, Murray, Waters, and Dominguez. The last spot is uncertain for me, but it won't be a wing.

You can wait for him to respond, or make the assumption we're all making, most likely correctly. Academics.

I think there's "personal" issues too.

If that's true, that's unfortunate.

The Big O had that great story a while back about him overcoming a lot to get here. I hope everything turns out well.

Just saw this on O-live:

Meet The Newest Viking Recruit

At 6'6'' and 205 lbs., Paul Guede should fill the Vikings need for an additional wing player.
Assistant basketball coach Tyler Geving confirmed Tuesday that Portland State signed junior college transfer Paul Guede to a letter of intent to play for the Vikings.

Coach Ken Bone and staff pursued Guede hard and beat out a handful of other mid-majors to get him. He's been described to me as a solid all around player, capable of doing everything well but not standing out in one area. He should help fill the hole created by the graduation of Deonte Huff and the departure of Justynn Hammond.

The signing leaves the staff with two scholarships to play with. Look for them to pursue at least one Division I transfer.

I like the looks of this kid. I wonder how accurate that 210 is? It would be great to have a quick but strong guy like Huff to be everywhere on the court.

With the two scholarships left I'd like to see a major big time D1 transfer would will knock our socks of in 2009-10, and a JC big man to fill the role while Conrad ferments during his RS year into a powerful beast that strikes fear into the hearts of the Big Sky Conference between 2009 and 2013. Wow, 2013.

Did I mention that in 2013 we'll also be discussing our previous five straight NCAA tournament bids while sipping our pre-game ale in the smoke free Cheerful Tortoise? This of course prior to walking over to our state of the art renovated Stott Center.

I like the way you think, Marty. Maybe we'll even be looking forward to our inaugural game as a member of the WAC.

As for the new recruit, how many years of eligibility will he have?

He played as a frosh, so I'm assuming he'd have his So, Jr, and Sr seasons if all goes well.

Paul Guede Signs NLI With Men's Basketball

Portland State men's basketball coach Ken Bone has announced the signing of Paul Guede to a national letter of intent for the 2008-09 season.

Guede, a 6-5 guard, played this past season at Tallahassee Community College, where he averaged 8.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Guede was third in minutes played, starting 20 of 27 games for the 17-10 Eagles. He shot .393 from the field, .397 from three-point range and .693 at the line.

"Paul is a perimeter guy who can handle the ball," Bone said. "He has times in his career where he has handled the point, so he has good solid guard skills. He's a threat from the three-point line and a very good team player.

"What I like about him as much as anything is his defensive presence on and off the ball. I think he will add a dimension to us in the fact that he can guard a few different positions. In that sense, he was a critical find. I think we have some good offensive weapons next year, but we need to find out who will guard on the other end of the floor. I think Paul will bring that to the table."

Bone became aware of Guede through a coaching friend who saw him play in England and helped place him in an American high school.

"We started recruiting Paul when he was in high school three years ago," said Bone. "He went to Vanderbilt for one year, redshirted, then transferred to Tallahassee. So, we knew he had three years of eligibility left. We kept track of him this year, watched his progress, recruited him and felt fortunate to get him with our program."

A native of London, England, Guede originally signed with Valparaiso University in 2006, but did not play. He transferred to play at Tallahassee CC last season and will have sophomore eligibility in 2008-09.

In 2006, Guede competed for Great Britain in the 2006 U20 European Championships. He averaged a team-leading 15.0 points per game. He has been selected to try out this summer for the fledgling British basketball squad that will attempt to qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.

Guede attended Grace Christian School in Sanford, NC where he was a three-time All-State selection and led the Crusaders to state championships in 2005 and 2006. Grace was 84-19 in his three seasons. As a senior, Guede averaged 22.0 points, 11.1 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game.

Also a star soccer player, Guede was named a three-time All State selection at Grace Christian in that sport as well.

Guede joins a Portland State basketball team that is coming off its' finest season in school history. The Vikings were 23-10 and won the Big Sky Conference Championship, reaching the NCAA Division I Tournament for the first time in school history.

The Vikings lost five seniors from that team and have seven letterwinners and three redshirts returning in 2008-09. Guede joins a pair of signees for the Vikings from this past fall, Jason Conrad and Glen Dean.

Not a bad pickup. He should fit right in to the SG/SF rotation with Murray, Nelson and company. Congrats to the coaching staff on keeping the press on to replace Hammond.

With the majority of the team returning and just a few scholarships available to give, the Portland State basketball coaching staff decided that they would be very selective in who they recruited this spring. One prospect they put the full court press on was Paul Guede, a lanky 6-foot-6, 205-pound wing from Tallahassee Community College in Florida. The London, England native took a visit to the Park Blocks during the Big Sky Tournament and then took a month to think about things before finally inking with the Vikings on Tuesday.

A little confused here. Over on the Pilots forum, one of the posters is claiming they have signed a 7-0 center named John Hegarty, but if you read several of the articles provided in the post, it looks like Portland State was recruiting this kid, not Portland. So like I said before, I'm confused. For example, one article states, "Portland State, which leads the Big Sky Conference this year, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which won the Southland Conference last year, have both shown serious interest. He expects to make an official visit to Portland next month, and could head to Texas, too." A little clarity on this subject would be appreciated.

I agree, it's confusing. But looking through the articles I'm not so anxious to see him coming, if he is. Sound like a lumbering monster, not able to keep up with our team. Even if he is down to the 270 claimed in one of the articles.

Portland and Portland State get confused on websites like that all the time. Just look at the coverage of the NCAA tourny run. Outlets like ESPN, CNNSI, and USA Today have all made this mistake.

How difficult can it be?

Portland State - big, ugly, cool, Jerry Glanville, MAAAAAAAJOR basketball
Portland - tiny, pretty, uncool, soccer

Time we win a couple more championships...

Nice of list of players who may be looking at PSU. Damen Bell-Holter sounds like he'd be a nice addition.
