Recruiting

Now that the football season has ended - it's officially recruiting season. Does anyone have any information on commitments or players that have put Sac at the top of their list?

Has the new facility been making a positive impact? We all knock the university for the gym issue, but I want to see if the fieldhouse and Rec center are boosting interest?

I like the spread of positions Sperbeck is going after. It seems like he is addressing the passing game on both sides of the ball. I also like the commitment to recruiting for the offensive line. A few of the linemen seem to be pretty well sized which will be needed for a consistent running game. It also looks like Sperbeck is putting a major emphasis on recruiting players out of high school as only 6 of the listed recruits are from JC. I would like to see a few more linebackers added to the list as I feel that graduation will have the largest impact at that position. Overall, I like what the list of recruits is shaping out to be. Now lets see how many of them will sign with Sac State.

I heard they had signed a Linebacker from Santa Rosa JC, I think Priera or something like that was his name. He is a great player on paper and from the story I read a good pick up. I have nothing on him so I can't confirm how good he really is.

Three mid-year JC transfers were signed. We signed the previously mentioned punter/kicker from Butte, Auggie Heath. The other two are LB, Jared Pereira, from Santa Rosa CC. Leading NORCAL conference tackler with 90 tackles and RB, Billy Maillard from LA Southwest College.

I'm glad to see Sperbeck sign a JC LB and RB. I'm not sure I understand why we haven't signed a JC WR - looking at the past year it was all Washington. This team is in serious need of play makers on the outside, I don't think they have anyone on the roster I would consider a threat.

Deadder really came on strong in the second of half of the season. The same with Hill and Lane. Deadder will be a sophomore in 09 so we still have him for three years. Im sure we will be able to find a JC WR. The signing period is open for JC kids...just because one wasn't signed on the first day doesn't mean they are not after someone.

And wasn't this the signing period for mid-year JC transfers who were either qualifiers in high school, who didn't sign a NLI out of high school or who are graduating in December? I think, but I could be wrong that If they are going to come in the fall, a JC can't sign until the first Wednesday in February.

If we're looking at jucos, perhaps the first place to look would be Delta. The Mustangs took down CCSF pretty handily in a big bowl game this year and have two pretty good QBs.

The Sacramento Bee Has reported that Sacramento State is also recruiting the Bee All Metro offensive player of the year. Zack Graves RB/WR 5-8-165 3 Star Recruit. Rushed for 2783 yards and 39 td's this season.

USC Receiver looking to transfer to FCS, would like to stay on the West Coast. Why not try us!

Looks like we lost out on Graves, but we'll able to see him when Montana comes to town.

RB - Zach Graves, Whitney (Rocklin), 5-9, 163, Sr
Graves led Whitney to a 13-0 record and a Sac-Joaquin Section Division 4 championship in just its third year of existence. The Sacramento Bee's All-Metro Offensive Player of the Year, Graves rushed for a Sacramento area best 2,783 yards on 318 carries and scored 39 touchdowns. He saved his best for last, rushing for 302 yards and three scores in Whitney's 35-14 section championship win over Placer. For his career, Graves has run for 4,218 yards on 542 carries with 56 touchdowns. He'll play at Montana next year.

A few more recruits

Trevor Mew Central Valley (Ceres) HS QB One Star
Kipeli Koniseti Grant HS QB / LB Two Star
Anthony Larceval Helix HS MLB Two Star

RB FROM OXNARD SAM MCCOWAN HAS COMMITED TO SACRAMENTO STATE. A TWO STAR RECRUIT MCCOWAN WAS RATED THE 156TH BEST BACK BY SCOUTS.COM . MCCOWAN VISITED SACRAMENTO STATE LAST MONTH.

CB DOMINIQUE GAISIE IS SCHEDULED TO VISIT SACRAMENTO STATE ON 1/23 A 2 STAR CORNER FROM MT SAN ANTONIO JC.

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL PLAYER PIERCE BURTON FROM RIO AMERICANO HS HAS COMMITED TO HAWAII.
SAC STATE SHOWED INTEREST NO VISIT WAS EVER SCHEDULED.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR NOT TRYING TO GET AS MANY LOCAL HIGHSCHOOL GUYS IN FOR VISITS AS POSSIBLE. WE ARE LOSSING OUT ON QUALITY GUYS LOCALLY. I KNOW SOME MAY NOT WANT TO PLAY HEREDUE TO THE PAST LOSING. BUT WE MUST TRY AND GET THEM ON CAMPUS TO SEE THE IMPROVING PROGRAM.

ANTHONY LARCEVAL COMMITED TO SAN JOSE STATE. VISITED SACRAMENTO STATE LAST WEEK.

Last year, we had a ton of recruits from the area join the program and most of them redshirted. Also, not withstanding Grant HS, the talent in Sacramento this year was a bit lacking. But overall, I think Coach Sperbeck is still recruiting this area more than others and will get good representation with this incoming class.

Are you saying the Sac State staff is not "trying" to get quality local guys on campus? If so, you are sadly mistaken. However, we aren't going to "out recruit" the D1 FBS schools 95% of the time. Its great to see we are competing for kids that are going to Hawaii, Nevada, Boise State, San Jose State and Fresno State. That tells me we are going after higher caliber kids. However, we are going to lose a lot of them, but if we get a few we've done a good job. For example, I've heard we got Grant's top linebacker. Many of the other kids at Grant, their RB and QB for example, don't have the grades or SAT scores to get into four year schools. You can't bring a kid in for a visit if they don't qualify.

From what I hear, the class will be very, very good. Better than we've had in a long time.

I'm saying we have to get as many local hs and jc guys in for visits as possible. If they don't want to stay and go somewhere else thats fine. But we must at least attempt to convice them to stay home.
Pierce Burton was never asked to visit. I know this because I know the coach at Rio personally.
Zack Graves goes to Montana which is the same conference and he's probably this area's best back.
We can't let Montana come into Sacramento and get a kid like that. That's what I 'M SAYING.
In Burton's case he chose Hawaii thats FBS I CAN UNDERSTAND. But graves to Montana no I don't like it.

I just want us to do better. I have seen improvment over recent years though.

There are many factors that fans arent aware of when the coaches are inviting kids for visits. Just because they are good players doesnt mean that they are a good fit for the program, I have faith in Sperbeck and his staff, I think that they know what they are doing.

Yes, there are lots of good players in the Sacramento area not to mention Northern California, and its great to get local talent. But if they arent a good fit they arent a good fit, if the kids want to be a part of a new era in Hornet football they will come.

As for Montana getting players from Northern California, name one DI school west of the Mississippi that doesnt recruit here, I think you'd be hard pressed to find one. The coaches are competing for recruits with lots of other universities, some of which have winning traditions and have risen to national prominance. Every once in a while those same schools forget or overlook good recruits in their own back yards, thats where the coaches can capitolize on recruiting.
