Reno- BSC:Conference officially starts the Spin

olds,

looks like el dorado might be nice. also, its next to the famous reno sign too. i remember seeing el dorado next to it. i stayed at atlantis which isn't walking distance but it was nice. i thought it was new but apparently it is from 1972 and el dorado 1973. looks like wiki shows both have had a number of changes and renovations.

reno wont exactly be the super bowl but maybe it will be ok. we just cant plan for a sold out arena if they are each struggling to sell 100 tkts.

Just stayed there in July. Its not great. I would much rather stay at Peppermill, Atlantis, or screw the whole thing and go to Tahoe.

Can anyone please explain why NAU who is 2-20 this year against D1 and SUU who is 3-19 against D1 deserves to go to ANY post season tourney?

aj,

for the 2015-16, 16-17 and 17-18 seasons the big sky believes that all 12 teams deserve a shot at getting to the big dance. even if the 12th place team goes 0-18.

while they hopefully hope the 12th place team, sub 300 rpi, does not qualify, they also don't want the 1st place team getting a home court advantage and having a decent crowd for tv. in recent articles the big sky have said its about raising the profile of the conf, giving each team a shot. this is interesting because originally it was about scheduling and saving money which appears to not be the case now that the tourney is almost here.

i really wouldn't care about any of this, format, location, who gets in...etc, if i can expect good crowds in reno. thats all i care about as one who will be there next month. i fear ill be in sparse crowds in what ive heard is a bball court in a conference room. i would much rather see the conf tourney in missoula or ogden in person or on tv and see a real tournament atmosphere. i want it to be exciting.

anyone on here seen a wcc tourney game in vegas that doesn't include byu or gonzaga? ...and that's in Vegas! :ohno:

I am assuming that they will be streaming these games. I might tune into some of the Tuesday games, just to see what the crowds look like. I'll be there for the Thursday game, but I'll only stick around for the championship if we are in it. It was advertised as general admission tickets only and I don't think there will be any shortage of tickets. I'll buy at the gate, for our game only. There is a slight chance I may take in another game if it is someone we might be playing next. :coffee:

You never know the BSC might beg, plead, and finally bribe you to stay for another game just to have butt's in the seats.

The hotels have already started the begging. They had originally jacked up their prices to $164 per night and then offered a 'discounted' rate for tournament insiders at %119 per night. However, when hardly anyone was jumping at that 'amazingly low' price, they have since cut it almost in half. They are still high for what the rest of the similar hotels in Reno are going for.

My guess is that there will be less than 200 in attendance for most of the games, and around 1,000 for the most heavily attended games. If you count the teams, cheer leaders, officials, administrators, media, janitors, concession workers, dancing girls, and people walking by on the streets, it could go all the way up to 1,500. :yikes:

Old's...1500? That is a very nice number. A glass half full kind of guy.

Doesn't the conference see the conflict with this? They talk about their desire to improve the conference but then they reward being terrible with a post season. Seems to me that if you truly wanted to improve the conference you would tell the terrible teams that they aren't invited until they improve. In fact I would take it a step further by telling them that if they don't improve they can find a new conference.

if weber hosted this yr would we have got 10k to a game? i think the reno facility capacity is 4,000. i wonder if 4,000 sold out in reno would make more money than weber hosting. i dont think the answer to either of my questions even matter i guess as neither will happen.

2014
Attendance: 6,294

2010
Attendance: 6,308

2009 (semi)
Attendance: 5,162

2007
Attendance: 9,178

Don't worry, ajwildcat. I'm not positive about many things in this world but one thing that I am positive is that NAU will be nowhere near an NCAA tourney seed this year. They play hard at home. They're occasionally in a road game. They may win 1-2 more games if things shake out. They're painfully young and inexperienced this year and my greatest hope is all of these growing pains pay off in 2-3 years.

I think that there are many who feel that inviting all 12 schools is not the biggest problem with all of this. The problem is the site and how it was selected. It wasn't a money thing. If it was, we would be playing in Ogden. It's not about the fans. If it was, it would be at a more fan friendly site. It's not about ease of travel. If it was, they would have gone after a SLC bid. It's all about 2 schools wanting to have the winners host and 10 schools insisting on a completely neutral site.

It is what it is, for this year and two more. After that, we will see how those 10 schools feel about what they have done to this thing and what corrections might be made. Actually, I am quite interested to see how it all shakes out. :geek:

Are you sure only 6,308 attended in 2010? I swear there were around 8 or 9 at that game. It was pretty full. Not a sell out, but still pretty full. There is a video, I don't suggest watching it (brings back really rough memories), that shows the stands. I've been to a lot of games at the Dee and you know when there is 6300 in the stands and when there are more. There were a lot more at that championship game than 6308. The 6294 is accurate. Nothing was done to market the tournament until the day of. It was weird. The East half of the stands were virtually full to the top and the West side was pretty much empty. It was really funny.

Reno...well, I've been told a few times, by various administrative sources, that if Weber or Montana had voted against Reno, IT WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED. Everyone voted for it. I think the Sky did a good job of getting Weber's, Montana's, and MSU's votes because they all thought they had a chance to get the hosting rights. Like Ogden or Missoula ever had any chance at getting the tournament. Billings doesn't have the $$$ and Salt Lake didn't want to buy the rights. That wasn't going to be an option. Reno had the money to buy off the conference it is a neutral location, and wanted any conference tournament; always trying to be like Las Vegas. Reno was, for 8 or 9 of the schools a great option. To get the other three to vote, the conference had to make them think they had a realistic chance at becoming the host site. :wall:

when hosting the conf tourney dont forget it has nothing to do with season tkts. every fan has to buy the tkts at the game or a few days before. so everyone that buys tkts actually attends where as season tkts are for games that span across months and many fans dont attend each game.

so when you see 6k it feels like 8k because when you see 8k recorded in the reg season box score but only 5-7k might have actually came to the game. students dont always get in free to the bsct as well so thats another factor.

i wasnt able to find the our last hosted tourney numbers prior to 2007 but i recall the game was 10,100 in 2003 and 8k in our semi.

Wow this was painful to watch. Now apparently there wasn't a vote for Reno? Even though the conference and others reported that all the presidents and AD's voted to move the tournament to Reno.

Grua says, "It's (reNO) going to be a basketball fans dream".

When talking about attendance being down,
"Our gate revenues really haven't taken a dip at all. Our walk up crowds and gate haven't changed at all."

They are considering moving the student section.

What they should be concerned with is season ticket sales and since that wasn't mentioned I'll assume that it's down. And until they improve the home schedule I don't see that trend reversing.
