Roos Field Renovation

Civic Stadium-PGE Park-Jeld Wen-Providence Park - same place different names. Oh, and it maybe a bigger crowd. Just saw an ad on TV here in Portland for the game- they're bringing in the Dallas Cowboy's Cheerleaders
Go Eags

Here's the ad:

I've noticed they plowed and apparently leveled a lot of the field behind the water tower. It connects to the new service road that leads to the back of the upper parking lot.

Edit: It wraps around and connects to the upper parking lot on the right (north) side of the tower, not the old water tower service the ramp.

Maybe they're expanding the upper lot even more?
What for more bathrooms?
I don't know how things ever get done so slowly . . . .I understand that there is a "process" but wow it is like a slow painful birth!

Dunno. Just a guess. Not sure what else it would be for. More parking is always a good thing.

EWURanger,
I hadn't noticed any work going on in the upper lot, of course next time I go out, will check what is going on. Maybe once the parking lot is what they want, maybe the Gateway Project" will commence     :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: Better yet, will make a trip out to do a little investigating tomorrow before it gets dark. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: Vic

Yeah, they were digging away at whatever this is up until about 6 weeks ago when it started to get really cold in Cheney. After that, they put some dirt mounds at the entrance to this new service road so that no one could go back there for the winter. I'm assuming construction on whatever it is will be on hold until the spring.

EWURanger,
I checked the area in question yesterday prior to the WBB at 6:05 p.m.. The area in question seems like an extension of the Warehouse for the University. There are two newly paved road that goes to an area where there are 4 spots for vehicles to back into and offload equipment. Wish I had news for all, especially "Gateway Project". :( :( :( :( . Earlier this year I was told there were supposed to have an additional 100 parking spots added to the present upper lot. There was so much mud down below in the area, it seems as if some type of work had been going on. Vic Wallace

I'm really interested in the building project, but there are 41 pages on this thread and I just don't have time to go through it all to find what I'm looking for. Is there any truth to the project possibly being finished or at least well underway by 2016? When it is complete it will be a HUGE recruiting tool for the Eags!
Sorry in advance if it's already been hashed out.

I was told that if they did not get the required commitments by the Holidays they were going to scale back the project? What that is I don't know? There is a meeting for tailgating tomorrow, maybe we will hear something then?

Thank you. I really hope some large private donors step up and do this for the University. The school has earned it and staying on top has it's price.
Perhaps the scale back might be not moving the entire field but instead building the new home side over on the current away side and extending the upper parking?

I think that the sticking point might be the track as to keeping it or getting rid of it and moving it. They have got do do something with those bleachers on the opposing side especially when TV comes in we look Middle School Esc. We are a top 5 program (yes I know FCS) but we have bottom feeder facilities - lack of concessions, lack of bathrooms, stands (bleachers). Don't get me wrong we have come a long . .A LONG WAY (new scoreboard, turf, bookstore, tailgating experience) from when I was going to school, but they could do so much more.

Not sure if it was this thread or the on regarding financing, but I wonder how much of a difference funding/alumni support in $$ will change with the engineering degrees starting to roll out.
As big a fan as I am I haven't kept up on what degrees are the most popular at EWU right now. Does anyone have insight as to what are the largest number of degrees coming out of there?

The Gateway Project is a $$$ thing and a couple big fish need to donate in order to make it happen. The university is doing the right thing, trying to strike when the iron is hot, and Eastern is red hot right now, but Eastern doesn't have a great tradition of booster support, and that's essentially what the gateway project is relying upon. I believe (not 100% sure) their is a fall back in place to basically add more seats to the visiting side, but not sure what that entails.

What Eastern needs to keep doing is developing great academic programs which pump out alums with higher paying degrees and in turn the money comes back to EWU...

Eastern (along with the other WA Public Universities) is pushing for State funding for the new science center as well as additional funds if the State decides to freeze tuition another two years and I believe that is taking priority over the Gateway project. Although one is relying on State Funding while the other is relying on Booster Donations.

Just my :twocents:

The landscape of college football is changing and EWU needs to be prepared. FBS vs FCS games are in danger of extinction which would be a disaster for us financially. 5-7 years from now the BSC will be different and if we want to play big money games vs FBS teams we better be FBS in some form. To be considered we must enlarge our stadium. I believe behind closed doors the realistic goal is to put in an enlarged visitor side (they won't make that side home side as it faces the sun and is away from suites/press box). They will upgrade concessions and bathrooms (which is way overdue) along with a few more cosmetic improvements. I doubt they move the track and by the sheer volume of tailgating participation (which is a game day experience in itself) an enlarged area will be necessary. Athletics at EWU is a reflection of how far the school has come as a whole and moving forward is a must. Looking at how our Soccer/Volleyball/Basketball and of course Football programs are doing adds a legitimacy to the school that reflects it's commitment to excellence in academics/athletics....perception is everything.

That makes a lot of sense. We've had several players go pro in the last decade. It would be a shame not to have them involved in this process as both donors and finding donors through marketing the concept to people in the communities of Eastern Washington.

I love this thinking. It's exactly the right perspective in terms of vision and how to get there; and more importantly why we NEED to get there.

In recent years I have visited many colleges with my players (high school coach) on recruiting trips and I will say that the structures that EWU has (except the visitor stands in the stadium) are impressive. I'd add that the coaches offices and player area could benefit from a redo as well.
The new dorms are outstanding. The bookstore area and weightroom facilities are also impressive. The campus is clean and beautiful. The stadium project would go so far towards putting the campus over the top.
I wouldn't mind seeing the visitors side match the home side in size and appearance. Coaches offices and player team room's would fit nicely underneath that new structure and some added parking up top or somewhere near would really be a nice addition.

Don't forget too that the more we put into the facility the more likely we are to keep the quality coaching staff that we have and the enrollment will jump.

Agreed, good post. I think a lot more is being done behind closed doors than most really know about, but a lot of it plays into $$$.

5-7 years from now college football and the divisions will probably look a lot different and Eastern needs to make some facilities improvements to make sure we are where we want to be. I think we have a great AD and Foundation with us and I do expect big things to come...

Looks like Bill Chavez is backing down from the original ambitious Gateway Project plans. Here's a podcast from this last week where he speaks about different paths and options rather than the original schematics.
