Roos Field Renovation

Going off-topic here, but as it relates to WSU and them alienating the local base, has there been much negative press about not recruiting anyone from the state? That is just appalling to me... I love the Cougs and will root for them against anyone not named Eastern, but some of their decision making is perplexing. For a team that doesn't get much love, they sure don't do much to try and garner support.

Dopa,

I've not noticed any negative press toward WSU relating to the non recruiting of Washington players. However, outside of WSU alumni and current students, there tends to be less and less support for WSU athletics. They're pretty much terrible across the board in all sports right now. Yet, somehow they continue to drop millions of dollars into Martin Stadium. Overall, I'd say EWU gets more airtime on local television stations and definitely seems to have more marketing across Spokane.

As far as this topic, we've got to do something as a fan base/alumnus to help with this project. Administration needs to be more transparent with what's going on because people are getting frustrated with not only the lack of building, but the lack of information. This projects support will dwindle away with each passing month unless something major is announced or done.

Hate to admit this having grown up in Spokane, the reason WSU doesn't focus locally is lack of Pac-12 Talent.

Now there have been exceptions over the years but for the most part you can't list 4-5 players each year that end up at Pac-12 schools. Now for EWU that's a different story as evidence of how hard the Montana schools recruit vs EWU here.

Years ago Dick Zornes told me he could find way more talent recruiting the Puget Sound that comes out of the GSL. His words not mine.

It's strictly a numbers game. Four out of the 20 3-5 star recruits according to Scout.com came out out of the 509. 20%.

http://recruiting.scout.com/topic/players?type=players&start=0&category=%22Football%20Recruiting%22&classYear=%222015%22&league=%22HS%22&homeStateAbbreviation=%22WA%22" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

20% seems like a good number. What % of the overall population is 509 vs 206 & 425? Much less than 20% I believe and the time and expense to recruit 509 vs the other 1/2 of the state is considerably less.

I agree there should be more transparency with the stadium project. Grass roots campaign seems like a good idea but probably won't be possible until there's some sort of major donation to kick start the campaign. I am personally in favor of scrapping the multi use idea and just improving the stadium itself by adding additional seating. I think the reason that some are clinging onto the multi use idea is that there may be state money available if they can sell it as more than just a stadium project.

"I know Oregon has one of the best facilities in the nation, but maybe they would look at least less appealing if they weren't fifty TIMES better than Eastern's concrete-bench stadium without a basic visitor's area. Our facilities are outrageous and maintain very little to be proud of."

I couldn't agree MORE. Our Football facilities are a joke. Sure we have a cool Red field and a nice Press Box. But the Visitors side of the stadium is down right embarrassing. I actually dread taking Friends and Family to Roos Field. I went to a 3A highs School in the Seattle area, and our stadium is bigger and better equipped than Roos Field.

The Gateway project looks to be a pipe dream and isn't happening. They need to just be level minded and remodel the visitors side ASAP. The track also needs to be removed and relocated to the acres and acres of land behind the Phase.

Sorry for ranting, but the appearance of Roos Field has bothered me since my freshman year in 2000.

I agree looking at the visitors side on TV makes me sick... The questions is where does the money come from??? In general our alums are not as affluent as as other colleges in the state and getting a grant or state dollars ain't happening...

We built a state of the art hockey arena when we don't have a hockey team but we have elementary school bleachers on the visiting side of our football field... :ohno:

Great point.... And now its probably too late for this upcoming season. I love the AD at EWU and think he means well, but enough is enough. Stop sitting on your hands and do something. Get rid of the public park bleachers and build something that doesn't make EWU look like garbage on National TV.

I don't think he is sitting on his hands, he is probably working on the greatest scheduling job ever... just ask dopa

Not sure what that means. inside joke? Cool.

But its been like 4 years since the Gateway Project was proposed. Sooner or later he needs to move on and realize that isn't happening. We need a fix and its needed asap. The stadium is below the level EWU is playing at. It doesn't represent the student athletes or the alumni in the way it should.

They are moving on, the new President is involved and a new plan is in the works. We will see something soon.

I think that EWU would be able to make a 8-10 million expansion happen pretty quick and I think it would be very impactful at that price. 60 million for the Gateway is a very steep price tag without financial institutional support.

Where does our new president stand with all of this? She has to know our fan base is EAGER to see changes made. Doesn't she? Is she involved at all in the process? What influence can she have on making something happen sooner rather than later?

The students just had a successful preliminary vote to completely redesign the PUB. This sounds like it will be paid for out of student fees... So, that path is no longer a viable option it would seem, if it ever were. I'm aware students at PAC12 schools pay a yearly optional fee of around $100 for student passes to get them into all athletic games, but if that was an option before- it doesn't seem like one now.

Here's an idea: If they are dead set on the multi-use idea, why not put the new Student Union across Washington Street and build it in conjunction with the stadium projecT?

gawd I hope you are right. This has gone on long enough. time to see some real action now, even if it comes in the form of some modest improvements. I know I am willing to donate when the time comes and there are many others like me. the Gateway is a great plan but I'd like to see some improvements to the stadium in my lifetime please.

eaglesfootball,
I completely agree with your sentiments. I have given up on the Project, and hope it comes in my lifetime also. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: Don't get me wrong, I will still continue to attend and back our Athletic Programs. I would even accept something on the other side, if the entire Project can't be done. It seems we haven't had the type of personnel willing to donate like Montana does. I read some time ago an Attorney had just donated $7,000.000. If we did I am sure we would have something started by now. I kicked in to help the Press Box, Suites, etc done. I am willing to help with the Project it needed. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: Vic Wallace

To All,
I also heard there are talks about getting "New Science Building" where the Reed Lab is now located, on 7th Street side, end of Martin Hall, don't know how truthful that is. Vic Wallace
