Roos Field Renovation

Anyone else heard that the new Prez has gotten involved and tasked the group with getting something - anything - done? I've heard that she said to scrap the grandiose plans and scale it down to something that can be done and then phased up later if/when money comes available.

I have heard something similar although unsure of the details.

Then you and I are in the same place. I don't have any details either, and there might not be any details at this point. What I've heard is that she basically walked in and said "where are you at on this on project?" and no one could give a clear answer. No one on the planet believes the stadium is sufficient as-is, but no one in leadership seems to be taking corrective action. Hopefully, she can provide the kick to the butt that gets this thing moving.

ouch if no one could give an answer that is VERY disappointing :? and I for one am glad that she is of the mind set/or it seems that she is of the mindset of how important athletics and facilities drive things.

I'm so relived to hear this! At least she is on board with the project. I was worried the the new President might not have any interest or worse be anti athletics.

Every time I see a new post on this thread I click on it hoping it will be some good or at least some updated news but only to find a post on a unrelated subject. While not ground breaking new it is good news.

Most likely the GWP will be done in stages with the first being to relocate the track and move the field closer to the West stands, I'm just waiting for that!

Removing the track, moving the field closer to the west stands and building better stands on the east is all we need at this point. That would improve the stadium ten fold. There is no excuse for the football facilities as they stand right now. High school stadiums are much nicer. We are the best program in the state and need a stadium to reflect that. I am optimistic the new president will make this happen but something needs to be done sooner rather than later.

If the Gateway project was designed to be multi use facility the area could attract big time entertainment all season long. The Isleta amphitheater is in Albuquerque.
http://www.isletaamphitheater.net/events/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Huge tourism generator for the area and exposure for the University.
To be clear I am not suggesting the facilities be the same as Isleta but be capable of having concerts, tractor pulls, super motor cross etc... and 5 football games per year

I don't see EWU using Roos as a venue for other events like concerts. Shoot, I don't know why they don't play more high school games there now.

Quick mention to the Gateway Project. Enough with exploring options, lets see something actually done.

I love EWU,I really do! However,I know stalling when I see it. The football team doesn't bring enough money annually to justify a 60 million dollar stadium renovation in CHENEY! Not only that, the current stadium costs about 5 mil~ ..... A RENOVATION/expansion would typically cost about 25-35% of the current stadiums's worth. Removing the track is a pipe dream baby! We would all LOVE for that to happen but it's last on THEIR lists. Expanding the east side is 1st on a VERY short list. Expanding the east side to the height of the north end one and the length of the west side is THE BEST we're gonna get for the next 50 years. BANK IT. :coffee:

Said this before and I'll say it again...hope to hear an announcement here in a few weks so construction can be done before start of '16 season.

The landscape of college football is changing and EWU needs to be prepared. FBS vs FCS games are in danger of extinction which would be a disaster for us financially. 5-7 years from now the BSC will be different and if we want to play big money games vs FBS teams we better be FBS in some form. To be considered we must enlarge our stadium. I believe behind closed doors the realistic goal is to put in an enlarged visitor side (they won't make that side home side as it faces the sun and is away from suites/press box). They will upgrade concessions and bathrooms (which is way overdue) along with a few more cosmetic improvements. I doubt they move the track and by the sheer volume of tailgating participation (which is a game day experience in itself) an enlarged area will be necessary. Athletics at EWU is a reflection of how far the school has come as a whole and moving forward is a must. Looking at how our Soccer/Volleyball/Basketball and of course Football programs are doing adds a legitimacy to the school that reflects it's commitment to excellence in academics/athletics....perception is everything.

I agree with Blackfalkin. I don't think the original design was pragmatic in the slightest. My understanding is that it required $20mm just to get it off the ground, and that obviously didn't include financing of the remainder. Barring a corporate sponsor with huge pockets stepping up, that wasn't going to happen. It would be hard for any corporation to justify $20mm on a project that would generate a very nominal amount of press for their company.

If nothing has materialized yet, I'd agree to keep the track and move forward putting larger, taller grandstands onto the Eastside (maybe 5,000 seats) that resemble a much larger version of what we have in the North endzone. It wouldn't be a long-term solution, but it would at least get our capacity up to par and improve seating for those poor souls relegated to that side of the field. It would actually resemble one half of Sac State's stadium; it's not an ideal solution, but at least it would offer temporary relief.

Sac State's stadium, for those that haven't seen it:

I'm fine with matching the visiting side to the home side, but it needs to be a steel and concrete structure with concessions, restrooms and locker rooms. At a later date box seat structure could be added like the home side, but please no cheap looking aluminium bleachers.

What would be the point in making the gateway project such a big deal for a solid two years or so if it was never feasible to begin with? Do people believe that this was just a marketing scheme or something by Chavez to get people to take the program more seriously while simultaneously designing the project to fail/never happen? I don't understand why they would even make schematics and whatnot if it were never pragmatic.

Did our AD & Dept of University Advancement just miss this bus after we won the natty? Are the chances of a corporate sponsorship quickly dwindling as we distance ourselves from 2010?

I don't believe there was any deception going on here. The foundation was in communications with a "whale" in the Spokane area that definitely has the means to donate to Eastern in exchange for the family's naming rights. The powers that be in the foundation could not get the deal done. There was substantial funds donated for and committed to the design drawings. I believe intentions were good because they were led to believe there was interest in a substantial donation.

To All,
Attended practice yesterday, All was doing sprints, and running. Spoke to some of the recruits, right now, they are all happy they came to EWU. Met Levi Long, Jayson Williams, Malcolm Williams, Sam Inos, Keenan Hlad, Sam Mcpherson. Former Eagle and Dallas Cowboys, Matt Johnson is working with the Players, which will be great for our Corner Backs/D/Backs. Will be back out at 9:15a.m. Vic Wallace

To All,
Senior TE transferred from WSU, and WSU, Kicker, now EWU, has a very strong right foot, he has some height and distance when he put his foot on the ball. Vic Wallace
