Roos Field Renovation

i wouldn't move the track unless the entire field could be lowered to add additional seating on either side. i think it would look really strange with a large gap in between the stands and the playing field. not for certain, but I have heard that it's not possible to lower the field because of all the water that sits below it. isn't this one of the big reasons the old grass field got so muddy all the time?

Of Course. I assumed when i said "REMOVE THE TRACK", I also would like EWU to lower the field the traditional ~12 feet to close the gap & add more seats.

As far as the water table issue. Im not sure if the water level under the field was an issue. However when I played on the grass it would be PERFECT untill it rained maybe twice. I think a local high school played on the field the Friday b4 our games too. Either way it wont matter bc EWU now has RED turf.

-The track just shouldn't be there, this is D1 football, there's plenty of room over by the soccer field, & they can take those ugly visitor side bleachers with it.

-The video board is also desperately needed. Fans need things to do at fb games. Thats why they come to have FUN. Thats why u have tailgating, kiss cam, fly-overs, TD canons etc. A Video board is relatively cheap. & it can add some excitement & help change the HS look of Roos Field. Roos' current scoreboard is VERY HS looking.

-EWU needs to remove the bench seating & add more chairbacks if/when they expand the visitors' side. Why? bc it takes less ppl to fill it up. More atmosphere.. but if your attendance slips then itll still look good. IVE SEEN UM do something similar with benches/SRO in the student section.

Anyone know if there will be an EAA meeting where we can discuss field renovations....I believe they have a big push in the spring for new enrollment/renewals?

Ranger...your field shots are awesome!

This looks awesome! I especially like the upper deck seats on the 3rd phase. Although if the new side looks better then the existing, will have to swap the home and visitor sections haha. These pics need to be floating around EWU to get the ball rolling for fundraising and plan designing. I know I hear a lot of different talk about the renovations in general and its tough to discern what is really on the books and what is just a pipe dream at this point but I would totally get behind this financially, (donating my small share) if we had a fund set up specifically for it.

It looks awesome and (not to harsh anyone's buzz) like any house renovation the next question has to be how much will this cost and how long will it take to raise the funds and do the construction? There's no doubt that it's needed and no doubt there isn't a better time to map out the project. Thanks, Ranger, for putting it in a visual for us.

Thanks all - just to let you know, I'm going to tool around with some other ideas I have as well. This was just one idea. I'll post different ideas as I finish them, and we can all decide what looks the coolest. Totally open to suggestions.

Had some time and finished some new renders. The other version was a cool idea, but I decided probably not very realistic for the short-term. I think this would be a good final vision.

1. Video board.
2. South end zone seating now mirrors north end zone.
3. Grand-stand on east side. (Unfinished in these renders but you get the idea.)

Final capacity would be:

End-zones x 2=3k
West grand-stand (press box side)=6k
East grand-stand-7k (Runs the length of the field)
Total upon completion=16k

When I get some time to finish it up (won't be anytime soon), I'll put it into 3d max and put out some real renders with back-ground, etc.

Well folks, I am finally done with this project. It was fun coming up with ideas on how to improve the football stadium, while getting to learn how to do 3d renderings at the same time. Fun, but time consuming, so I had to work on it during the weekends or when I had spare time, which isn't often. So it took forever. When I get a chance, I'll upload it to 3d warehouse, and it can be downloaded from there. The idea is that you can put these models into google earth, although since this one is only theoretical, I won't be doing that. Plus, there is already a model of the Inferno in google earth - although not as detailed as mine!

I built just about everything from scratch, to include the terrain, in google sketchup, with the exception of the lights and a few other small things. The field I made in Photoshop and imported into Sketchup as a jpeg. Not everything is 100% to scale probably, but it's pretty close. As I said before, the terrain I had to make, because believe it or not, the google earth terrain was far from accurate and the angles were way off. I am sketchup'd out for a while, but I'll probably do another one of these at some point. Maybe WA-Griz or something.

West stand-6k
End Zones x 2-3k
East Stand-7k
End state - 16k seats.

Artistic view of current entrance with new south end zone seating (identical to north end zone.)

Really like this look. The whole thing just looks so much more legit.

View from west stand. Another artistic rendering.

Current lower parking lot would have to be reworked a little.

With the new east stand, there would have to be another entrance into the stadium.

And lastly some bonus shots that I put through an actual 3d engine (look kinda weird to me):

Anyone want to donate 2-3 million to make this happen? :thumb: It'd be nice to get our facilities significantly improved by say, 2015.

Outstanding work Ranger! :notworthy:

Two thoughts:

1) The final image from behind the south entrance looks real sharp.

2) What about black seats? Yeah they'd get hot, but most of the important events take place when it's cold and thinking of that, it might help to melt the snow.

That's not a bad idea. I thought about different colors for the benches, but wasn't sure if it would look weird with the entire press box side basically red.

Could always do the multi-colored patterns with the seats that spell things out.

looks great u genius! We shd get these to that bald AD of ours! They still havent officially announced the new video board. Again GREAT WORK. These are professional quality. btw Screw Wa-Griz, do one for Nor Col or NAU's new one. Or keep improving EWU's with Dressler & Pierce in the background. 3d looks a little better. Id say also.

EWURanger,
Sorry, I must disagree with you about scoreboard Funds. I know for a fact, Mark Hughes have been getting funds for the above mention subject. What I have heard, there is a possibility of attempting to secure the UW Scoreboard. Cost for a new one will cost an ARM/LEG  Due to the bidget cuts over the State, Mark have utilized trips to secure funds. I know he is working his rear end off securing Funds. 8-) Lets hope it comes in very soon, probarbly not until after this season, hope I am wrong.

I do say a lot of us are feeling the pinch for monies, however, I am happy to do what I can to help our program. Our young Men/Women deserve this for what they have accomplished. :thumb:

Reference renovaion of Roos Field, I have spoken with our AD numerious times, he is very much interested in getting some work done, as usual, the funds are the problems. He wants to get the same things on the Visitor Side, (East) reference seating, etc, as on the Pressbox Side (West). He also spoke about the Concession Stands.Only wish we can come up with some kind of magic and secure the Funds to get the entire renovation completed. Our young men and women deserve this for what they are doing throughout the Athletic Programs. I haven't hit Powerball/Mega Ball as yet. Once I do, they will be taken care of.;) Be Cool. 8-) Vic

The pix are great... and I 'd like to mention that Chaves and his crew are better at soliciting donations than anyone we've probably ever had here. Let's not forget that Eastern has always been "challenged" in this area, largely due to apathetic alumni and poorly managed resources at the top of the university (wasting money on advancing the commuter school model during the 80s was nearly a death blow to all things Eastern). I can't ever remember getting more correspondance from Eastern- friendly correspondance, not like the crap I get from WSU trying to guilt me into supporting a perennial loser program- asking for my support.

Just to throw it out there, a video board would be tight. I'd still rather see permanent East grandstands though. Even if we didn't go permanent for the upcoming couple of years, I'd like to see us invest in better temp stands... maybe something like what we have in the North endzone on the East side of the field. Not sure why we ever went so cheap on ther Eastside to begin with...

Adding endzone seating to the South end seems superfluous until we have the attendance to justify. Really, 12,500-14k quality seats would be ideal. Even if we didn't neceassarily fill the stadium all that often (which I think we would with continued success and good seats for our fans), at least we'd have something to be proud of and attract recruits to.

Vic, my points shouldn't be taken as a slight on anyone in the AD. I wasn't saying that people aren't working diligently to make things happen - I'm sure they are.

That said, I still maintain that "we" do a poor job of generating support for capital campaign projects. It's not enough that just the people that are "in the know" on these issues know what's going on. Some of the most die-hard EWU fans/alums are on this site, and if I had to guess maybe half of us knew anything about the scoreboard project. What does that tell me? It tells me that the majority of casual fans/alums know nothing about it at all! There's been nothing about it on goeags.com, no e-mails, nothing. I think you see my point.

IMO, the University/AD has a much broader "potential" fan base than I think they realize. They just need to come up with some creative ways to tap into some of that potential. Sure, promotional ads and the like are a great start, but it's going to take more than that. A good example of a capital campaign project is what MSU did with their EZ project.
