Sac v. NAU

Sperbeck is too conservative with his playcalling. But the Hornet punt pins NAU insude their 5 with 2:51 to go.

You won't hear it very often from me , so enjoy. Congratulations, Sac State - a win against a quality team..

Thanks. First win against a ranked opponenet in who knows how long. I would say the same to you but I hear things didn't go so well in Cedar City.

Very impressed with McCowan playing most of the game on a banged ankle and gets 130 yds! The defense stepped it up..Christian Clark was a stud with 4 sacks!! We made plays when we needed too... We had the ball for 11 mins. in 3rd...huge! We shut them out in the 2nd Half...Outstanding!!!! What a game!!!

I missed the first half but listened to the 3rd and 4th quarters on the radio and caught the last 5 minutes on hornetsports.com.

The Hornets defense shut down NAU when they needed to and did something no team has done this season - force multiple game-changing turnovers. Hornets won a tough one. Well played, Sacramento State. For whatever reason, you have NAU's number there it seems.

With the three brutal upcoming games left, that may have been the death knell for NAU's post-season hopes?

Best of luck to the Hornets the remainder of the season.

Hope to see you back on this board again soon. But the home team has now won the last 5 matchups between these two schools. It's a back and forth series. NAU still has some huge games left on their schedule and can now play the role of spoiler. That is something Sac will be doing when they play at MSU in two weeks.

so I will go out on a limb and predict today will provide a bigger dose of Dailey than anyone expects, McCowan will have a breakout performance, the Defense will have their best outing yet. Reed and Hendershott continue to bring down jump balls put up by Smith for critical third downs and scores.

Sac State by a small margin in front of the smallest crowd of the year so far.

I suck at predictions! Dailey didn't play a down!

Great game!

We will be lucky to see Dailey in a Sac State uni ever again, his shoulders are torn up.

No more than Hilliard's shoulders were at the end of last season. And Hilliard could play now but we dont want to burn his redshirt. Dailey will prob have to have the same kind of surgeries Bryan had and will bounce back. Tough player if you ask me....

He has had one shoulder cut on while in Washington and it's torn up again, the other one is now torched and requiring work. The line is "we will wait and see" but the true feelings are that first shoulder can be repaired again for normal living but will not take football without damage. I did not question if the young man was tough or not, I only stated what I had been told. Bo Jackson was a tough guy but his hip took him out of the game.

Great game by the Hornets, they were able to overcome some turnovers and get the win. I was very impressed by the pressure the front four was able to get on Herrick for the majority of the game. It was obvious Herrick was rattled and wasn’t able to get into any rhythm. This is how I imagined the D-line playing all season long. They need to keep this intensity level up for the remainder of the season. On the other side of the ball, the O-line was equally impressive. They came out and dominated the line of scrimmage in the 3rd quarter. The Hornets literally shoved the ball down the throat of NAU in the 3rd quarter. It was beautiful. The offensive line really saved the game, Smith was falling apart at the end of the 2nd quarter and if it wasn’t for this dominance, the running game wouldn’t have got going and this came would have had a different result. McCowan showed us all what he is capable of and it’s obvious he will be a huge weapon for the offense.

Special Teams really had a huge day. They didn’t allow any huge returns; they executed a beautiful fake punt early in the game that really set the tone for the Hornets. Also the kick and punt returns were solid and provided the offense with great field position. No missed field goals or PAT’s by the kicker and the punter had a great game and was able to pin the NAU offense deep in their own side of the field as well. The only knock on the special teams was the fumble by Richardson after a great return. Fortunately the Hornets were able to overcome this mistake. This just goes to show how vital special teams are in a game. The coaches obviously worked on special teams this week and it showed. They will need to keep this up for the rest of the season.

The defense had a great game in that they were able to get pressure on the QB and affect his play. There were some good open field tackles that were made by the secondary and they didn’t give up any big plays. The secondary made some huge plays late in the game and nabbed 2 INT’s to derail the NAU comeback. They are still allowing teams to convert 3rd and longs which is a concern. I think a lot has to do with the play calling. For example, NAU had a 3rd and 9 and the DB’s were playing 10 yards off of the WR’s. I mean how much more ridiculous can it get? How about a little bump and run with the safeties playing in a zone? Also the prevent defense play calling on the last drive allowed NAU to set up a potential tying FG. The worst was the call to not rush 4 D-linemen on a few plays. I mean the front 4 were getting good pressure on the QB most of the game and so the DC goes and takes one out? Unless it’s the last play of the game and the offense is going to throw a hail Mary, I see no reason why the D should ever rush less than 4 people.

The offense looked good for the most part. The offensive line came out in the 2nd half and controlled the line of scrimmage. The running game got going and was able get points. McCowan made some plays and had a huge impact. Smith had a great start to the game but fell apart late in the 2nd quarter. 14 points off of 2 INT’s is just down right awful. The offense played a lot better in the 2nd half but had two three and outs following the INT’s the defense had. Sperbeck got too conservative and didn’t go for the kill.

The bottom line is the team came out and played with intensity and some serious motivation. If they play this way the rest of the season, I think they can win out.

GO HORNETS!

As I reflect on yesterday's game, I have say it was the most exciting, best played, and most inspirational Hornet win I have seen. A really big improvement over last year's NAU game, too. The team's improvement is obvious, everyone kept fighting, and things are coming together. I cannot wait until we go to UNC next Saturday. I will be watching and cheering on our Hornets.

I have to say it again. The win against NAU was a great game, an awesome win, and definitely shows what kind of football team is at Sac State.

Go Hornets!!!!

Link to game pictures below. A bit more than usual of the band, cheerleaders, tailgating, etc-------but the costumes were too good to ignore.
