Sacramento is not going to hurt you with outside shooting as much as they will with penetration and lobs into the post. Under pressure, their guards will turn it over a bit. Although I don't think we will see it, a zone could be effective against them. A press could force some turn overs as well. We will probably play them strait up man to man. They may well do the same. Being in a larger city, with an international air port, we will probably get good officiating. We always seem to play well there and that may be one of the reasons.

I expect a hard fought game. We need to, at least, split on our two remaining road trips.

Good luck Wildcats. I will be wearing my lucky socks.

Watched a lot of their 2nd half against Montana. Sac went after rebounds religiously. We may have won 5 straight but we were out rebounded in 4 of those 5 games. We need to improve in that aspect now that we are going back on the road again and not allow the Hornets to get many 2nd chance points.

Many people give the Hornets crap for their gym but it has given us fits in the past. Gonna have to play a good mistake free game

Go Weber

I agree, we have to continue to get better on the boards. Even though NAU out rebounded us, we did show improvement and it wasn't as big of a factor as it could have been. Sac is a good rebounding team, but maybe not quite as good as NAU.

Last year we won games with our rebounding. This year, not so much. Last year we were an inside out team. This year we are an outside in team. We are winning games this year with our shooting, ball handling, and defense. Even a slight improvement in rebounding helps a lot.

Katz thinks about zones the same way Randy does,.... not much. That actually plays in our favor. Our guys play against tough man D every day in practice. Sac may try to press us. For the most part, we have handled presses well this year. We turned it over a few times last night, but that has not been the norm. We are usually shooting layups when we get pressed.

The most effective D played against us, to date, was EWU. They slowed way down on offense and used a trapping man off of screens.

Sac, if they are on, can be dangerous. They have been playing with a little more swagger at home and can cause matchup issues with most teams. Weber, can use Dusty a bit more to off-set the matchup issues and stretch the floor. I say press them back and exhaust their starters. We have the deeper bench, but I know that Randy won't do that.

IMO, we will not press them back. I do think they will try to press us. It could backfire on them. They are not deep at guard. One or two of their guards in foul trouble would be significant for them. Also, we have been dunking on other teams presses. For the few turn overs they might get, the scoring they would give up would be significant. I also think they will try to throw a half court trapping D against us. Again, the same issues surround that tactic. ISU tried it to no avail. EWU did it with a little better results. However, EWU was doing it with 6'5'' to 6'7'' guys. That isn't how Sac's team is built.

In this game, we present more matchup problems for Sac than they do for us, IMO.

This isn't an easy win. None of them are. However, if averages prevail, we should be OK.

Game day.

This is a huge road trip, hopefully Weber can come in focused and play more of a complete game against the Hornets. We started off well against both NAU and SUU but really struggled toward the end in both of them. Cant do that on the road especially against a team and fan base that loves to hate us. Sac State's fans always show up and are rowdy when we come to town so we are gonna have to fight through the home court advantage.

Here's hoping for a solid start on this road trip as we pick up a win in Sacramento.

GO WILDCATS.

Yes. a win here would be huge. We have two road trips left. If we split or better on both of them , we win the championship. It's that simple. A loss isn't the end of the world, but it would make things harder.

I hope Sac does get a large crowd. That just gets our guys going. It's, sometimes, hard to get motivated to play in an empty house. The more vocal they can be, the better for us. It just gets our juices flowing.

By current day standards, they will probably have 10,000 in attendance tonight.

What the fetch is going on? I understand Senglin is only 2 3's away from the record but he is not hitting today but for some reason that is the only shots we are content to take in this second half. I knew this was going to be a tough game but we are making Sac look like world beaters.

being 4-11 from the free-throw line sure doesn't help. :wall:

Jeremy lost this game. I know he wins more than he loses, but tonight he was awful. The last 6 minutes of the game, he should have been benched.

Wasn't able to watch it, but could total guess how the game went. Well...we average a WTF game each season. We live and die by how our Senior SG plays.

Jeremy is a great player but he just needed to pass the ball a bit more down the stretch. It's good to take over the game offensely when everyone else is guarded. However, if they are basically leaving other players, the we need to trust our teammates more. Jeremy is a complete stud and we wouldn't be where we are without him. I'm not worried about this game because good teams are going to lose a bad game or two on the road. Just make sure we get the one at Portland State.

Rebounding and free throws are Weber's weaknesses and they jumped up and bit you on the road tonight. Usually Weber has enough offense to compensate but not when Senglin goes 1 for 8 from three. Saturday's game at PSU should be a real shootout. First team to 90 wins.

Exactly. Yes Senglin was 1-8 from 3. But Weber was killed on the boards last night. Gave up 12 offensive rebounds. Hornsby and Stuteville: 18 rebounds, 8 of them on the offensive end. Braxton and Hill 7 rebounds, 2 on the offensive end.

Reminiscent of the North Dakota loss. We got too far down, rallied, and the other team played well down the stretch when the pressure was on. Give Sac credit they didn't get rattled and stayed with their game plan. We turned it on, and they responded. Need a win at Portland.

Next Saturday night's game is looking like a really good one.

Weber's shooting .314 from 3 in losses and .480 in wins. Senglin's averaging 16.4 in losses and 22.9 in wins. This team relies heavily on 3 pt shots (41% of total shot attempts are from 3) and points from one player (25% of total shot attempts are from Senglin). When the 3's aren't falling and/or Senglin isn't scoring, any team in the conference can beat them, including Sac St. The rest of the team hit their 3's last night, hitting 9 of 10, but Senglin was only 1 of 8. :twocents:

Honestly, Sac presents serious match up problems for the Cats. Stuteville and Springs are under-rated posts and Hornsby can spread the defense. I posted, tongue in cheek, the other day that Weber should press Sac and possibly play a zone. To me, when there are match up issues, you make adjustments. I'm a Randy fan, but one thing that absolutely drives me crazy is that he refuses to change things up. He is far to committed to his system, which is good, but at times it is alright making a change.

Why press Sac? Weber has the far deeper backcourt. We are quick, talented, and we have the personnel to run and gun a bit. Why not force the team that has a short bench to play the entire length of the court? Not only would it have worn out their guards, but also, it would have worn out their bigs who were just better than ours last night.

Why Zone? Look at their shots! They scored most of their points inside the arc. Limits touches by their bigs and forces their bigs into taking bad shots. Also, it forces a team, that isn't the best at shooting, to shoot outside.

Even though we looked bad, got a chance to watch some of the game, we still shoulda, coulda, woulda won if Jeremy is on. Could we kinda blame this loss on the Deseret News?

That is so funny -- I was thinking about the same thing. We've gotten so much good press lately (which is unusual) you worry about the superstitious curse that results from those kind of things.

It's kind of like watching the Atlanta owner in the Super Bowl. Heck with Brady and the play of the Patriots -- as soon as I saw him standing down on the sidelines in the 3rd quarter (instead of staying in his loge seats) I thought, dude you are so messing with the Fates.

You have to love sports superstitions.

My take on the reason for the loss... could be any of a number of things.
1. Rebounding - no excuse for how poor we are at this.
2. Bad 3 pt shooting night, especially Senglin. Why did he keep putin'em up?
3. Cannon's inability to put any defense on their 6'0" 190 pound point guard. He put up 14 points in the second half when Cannon was on him. Cannon has to be the slowest point in a league of slow point guards. His inability to defend his man kept Sac in the game in the second half.

As for the positives. Thanks to Richardson for shooting us back into the game in the 4th qtr. I sure wish he would play like that every game. He was awesome, but doesn't seem to have the focus and drive to do it consistently.

The team shot very well from 3, minus Senglin. Senglin was 1 of 8, rest of the team was 9 of 10. I guess you have to take the bad with the good when it comes to Senglin. Without him the team would really struggle to score points and would probably be a .500 team at best, but at the same time because he is so much of the offense (he takes a full quarter of the shots) when he struggles it's difficult to win. I do think he could do a much better job of recognizing when he's off and try to get others more involved instead of continuing to shoot at his regular pace. Part of that has to be on Rahe as well. You saw this last Thursday vs SUU. He starts off on fire making 7 of his first 8 shots and the team goes up 24-5. Then he gets ice cold, misses his next 4 shots (all 3's) and finishes the game going 2 for 10, all the while SUU cuts the lead to 8. On one fast break I remember well Harding is sitting all alone under the basket and Senglin just ignores him, continues driving to the basket, and gets fouled.
