Sperbeck, UNEXPECTED DEPARTURE

OH23...I said they were the best assistants on the defensive staff...and they were. It was an example of Sperbeck's poor staff management. Regardless of how you feel about the strength of that staff, he took a guy who was no better than the third best coach on the defensive side of the ball and made him the coordinator.

Lazer...if you knew of violations and knew bringing them up to Wanless would ultimately cost you your job would you still have come forward?

I don't believe for one second the impetus of this letter came from a single entity. I think it came from multiple people who are ex-players and/or were fired and now have nothing to lose by exposing Sperbeck. The bottom line is if he was running a clean program they would have had nothing to report.

I assure you there are people outside the athletic program who know exactly why his tenure ended abruptly and there is more to it than a ten page letter.

Absolutely, if they were valid I would bring my concerns to Sperbeck, Wanless and Gonzalez in that order and give each a chance to correct the violations. Even if would cost my job. If no action was taken I would contact the NCAA. At least I would still have my self respect. If you would be let go for pointing out violations that would make the school and the violations look even worse.
I suspect that the letter was a collaboration by coaches, and maybe players that were kicked to the curb over the past several years are bitter and can't get over it. The front men are likely Roberson and Gigli since they were the last out and had the most recent about the program. I don't see the rational for Parker to shake the cage. He was the one retained by Sperbeck when the rest were kicked to the curb.
As a fan I'm sorry all this has come about we need to know the facts and move on. I hope that this has not caused too much damage to the program. I hope Baiz, Osterhout and Roberson enjoy what's left of their coaching careers at ARC working for the ex ucdungpile AD. I wouldn't want any of them back at Sac State under any circumstances.

Unfortunately, Sperbeck has fooled you all. He was inept and incompetent. I'm sorry but it is true. Many players have complained about hidden racism in the program for years. From direct sources I can tell you that many minority players were "randomly"(and I use that word loosely) drug tested very frequently. Other players (who actually "allegedly had drugs in there system were never tested) that is just one example I can go on and on but don't want to come off on the wrong note. If you know any of the kids you can ask them yourself. Seemed like a really good guy just wasn't the best coach in the world.

Talk about reckless comments, you even contradict yourself! How could an "inept and incompetent" coach then turn around a program with subpar facilities and what many regard as an under performing AD? Then on top of that, you want to play the race card. You could have just left it as him being incompetent. Next time, pick one dig. And then you contradict yourself by saying "I can go on and on but don't want to come off on the wrong note". My understanding is that when he came in there were issues, and he addressed those and cleaned up the program. I'm sure he stepped on a few toes.

Didn't someone say last weekend Blow Davidson was promising on some blog to release a follow-up article? Anyone know that status of that piece?

I agree with GL here. IMO by not speaking up while they knew of these infractions then they are just as culpable as Sperbeck. And had they spoken up such that it resulted in their firing then they would probably have a strong whistleblower case against the University that would have netted them a nice payday.

Unfortunately we’ll probably never know who did this so the best course might be to just assume all former assistant coaches under Sperbeck had a hand in this and therefore they should not be allowed anywhere near the program in the future.

Let me get this straight...Sperbeck gets caught cheating and turns the entire program upside down due to his untimely departure so EVERY ex-assistant coach should be banished from the program forever.
Really?

Another double standard gem by OSH. You accountability meter is all over the map. I find it comical that you are reluctant to give Sperbeck credit for rebuilding a hapless program, yet have no hesitation in placing all the blame at his feet. Accountability goes both ways.

As far as the ex-Sperbeck assistants go; yes, yes I would “banish them” for life. You floated the idea of this 10 page letter coming from a group of former assistants/players and you have no problem putting the program at risk for another letter by rehiring them? That would be negligent IMO.

Since none of them spoke up WHILE these infractions were going on, why would any administrator expect them to speak up about infractions if they were to rejoin the staff? If the authors of the letter didn’t agree with this line of thinking, they would have had no problem putting their names on the letter and owning. That didn’t happen so the department needs to take precautions about who they let around this program so that a similar situation of ex post facto infraction reporting is avoided in the future.

I never suggested hiring anyone back...I questioned your "banning all ex-assistants for life" statement...WTF does that mean anyway?
Rebuilt a hapless program? When did he do that? Sperbeck never once won more than six games in a season and got his ass out-coached routinely by Davis.
You want me to give him credit for being better than Mooshaigian? I'll do you one better...he was better than Mooshagian and Brady...but that's it. And neither one of those clowns got caught cheating.
He was the HC...he was absolutely at fault. He signed a contract allowing the university the ability to terminate him if he cheated and he went there anyway. If he would have been running a clean program there would have not been anything to report. If he wasn't guilty, why didn't he stay and fight?
If one of his players would have been caught cheating on a final they would have cut loose immediately and made an example of.
What kind of example was that molder-of-young-men setting? How many mother's of recruits are disgusted they allowed their son to go to Sac State? Do you have any idea how much damage he has done for recruiting seasons to come. The program will not fully recover for years.
Suggesting the letter may have been drafted by more than one entity doesn't mean I think I know who wrote the letter. I have no idea who wrote the letter. Someone else "floated the idea" that it might have come from someone currently on the staff. By your line of reasoning they should dump the current assistants too since at least some of them had to know about the infractions and might speak up later.
At this point the only person who needs to banished is the guy who just let the entire Sac State football team down by exercising poor judgment that ultimately got sent packing as they were supposed to be preparing for a successful season.
Double standard my ass.

You wouldn’t be so butthurt about it unless you actually think bringing those ex-assistants back is worthwhile. Only a delusional idiot would expect different results from rehiring the former assistants. As far as what I meant by “banning”, I was pretty clear about it above. Try and keep up.

The fact is Sperbeck has the best D1 accolades in Hornet history. Anyone not living in a cave for the last 7 years knows that. The Hornet football program is much better now than it was when he took over. Again, try and keep up. I would lay out some figures but I already know numbers are tough for you to comprehend.

Trivia question of the week: Only once has Hornet football exceeded 6 wins in the D1 era. What coach accomplished this?
Hint: This coach’s era concluded with a memorable cloud of aerosol cooking spray on the sidelines in Missoula. :dunce:

You want me to give him credit for being better than Mooshaigian? I'll do you one better...he was better than Mooshagian and Brady...but that's it. And neither one of those clowns got caught cheating.
Brady coached over 35 years ago so I guess that’s relevant. And there were a myriad of off the field issue with Moosh, but hey he wasn’t caught cheating!!! Yet another double standard by you.

I never argued Sperbecks wasn’t at fault. All along I have been saying he is accountable for the program, both the good and the bad. Try and keep up.

Unless more serious infractions come to light, I’m sure current and past players mom’s are horrified at the thought that their kids played for someone who was ousted for talking on the phone too long and dropping by to see a recruit during a “dead” period. Oh the horror!!! :o Let’s lock Sperbeck in a cage and throw away the key. What an evil monster he is! And it is absolutely comical that you think this program is not resilient enough to overcome those low level of infractions. Your “logic” regarding this damage is comical.

BTW I find it hysterical that someone who admittedly came on this board looking to drum up support for an anti-Sperbeck crusade is suddenly worried about the harm done to the program. It doesn’t get better than this, I mean you can’t make this sh!t up.

No, if current staff knew about the infractions and did nothing then they should be let go for that ethical lapse. This is only about the 3rd time in this thread that this point has been made. Again try and keep up.

Your “logic” regarding anything Sperbeck related is riddled with double standards and unbridled bias. Where is your outrage towards Volek due to Pam-gate? Where are the over the top doomsday predictions about the damage caused by the rock throwing idiots under Moosh? Surely those incidents pale in comparison to extended phone calls and unapproved recruiting visits.

Yeah OSH, no double standards by you at all. Keep the hits coming my man, because obviously they are endless.

Unless Sperbeck knew he wasn't capable of exceeding 5-6 at this level and took the first pass given to him out the building.

I'd be pissed too with clown 1 (Gonzo) and clown 2 (Wanless) making probably all kind of promises about facilities, etc. and having nothing but smoke screen and mirrors. And nylon tarp. With a big 'S' stenciled on the side.

Money is not an issue, he will be just fine with 22 yrs. of state pension and will land on his feet at XX JC and win the championship. All better.

Time for you to keep up.

He didn't actually walk away the University asked him to resign for one of a few reasons.

1 - Way to get out of 200k contract for a year or two and possibly bring in another HC for lower $$$
2 - Lesson any possible penalties that may arise from the infractions (note: if Sac St was 10-2 last year he would still be here, infractions or not. Don't believe me, look at Univ of OK, this past year they went through the same stuff and did self imposed sanctions...NCAA was fine with it, difference is record and $$$ to NCAA.

The infractions I have been privy too are, phone calls, a contact in dead period and extended summer workouts...nothing most programs BIG programs aren't creatively doing each year.

I know you may not like the guy because you felt he fired some good coaches over the years...but it's actually part of this Biz...people can't get butt hurt over firings just like HC can't be upset when an assistant leaves to take on bigger and better opportunities. The guy actually helped take a program that was facing pretty severe APR sanctions from the NCAA and made them a respectable team. Albeit, it never made the plateau of 10 win season that everyone was looking for, they are in a better place than it was with past coaches.

My only gripe with all of this is that basically some "coward" threw the current and future players "under the bus" for their own gratification....and for that I hope they find out who it was...so the just party can enjoy a new career in Pop Warner :)

They sent it anonymously because they new they would be black balled...same thing happened in CS Northridge years ago...assistants that sent it never worked in significant coaching jobs again.
