St Katherine

In looking at the stat sheet, and my general impressions of how they played, I would say that Zack out played James in this outing. However, this is the first time, in the many times that I have watched them, that I would make that observation. James did not rebound nearly as well as I thought he would. James was the 4th big man in the rotation last night and got the kind of minutes that a player in that ranking would get. It is still too early to tell if Braxton has risen to the point of taking over the 4th spot, but if all you had was last nights performance, you might conclude as much. Even if he does win the ranking as the 4th big man, I'm not convinced that 10 to 14 minutes a game, when you have his kind of skill and potential, is worth burning a year of his eligibility for. The player that we didn't see at all, was Van Pelt. I think it is reasonably safe to say that, for now, he is the 6th big man in the rotation.

Of the freshman guards, I thought they all had their moments. Jefferson played with the most confidence he has had all fall and Hunter was steady. Richardson seemed to be rushing things a little. The first guard off the bench was Hunter and he got the minutes that you would expect. It was less clear who the 5th guard will be, although Jefferson played with the most confidence. We didn't see any of the walkons. :twocents:

One other observation; Hill seemed to earn more time at the 3 spot. If he starts playing the 4 spot as a starter and the backup role at the 3, that will increase the minutes for Johnson-Coston and potentially the 4th big man as well. It also increases the likelihood that two of the freshman guards can get a red shirt year in, and that would help them a lot. :coffee:

I have been away from the site for a while because high school football in Florida is more serious than anything Utah has ever seen and my son is a high school freshmen as a WR. However I wanted to hear about the game last night from those who were in the seats so I checked in today. Looking at the stats our starting 5 is as good as advertised and the new guys are coming a long. Here is what I am bothered by though Olds said this earlier this year and I guess some of us don't seem to care or they want to make people think they are basketball insiders and they are not. Parents of the players follow this site just to stay informed and if I were a parent of one of these kids and you all were talking about him leaving for whatever reason it would bother me to the point of calling the coaching staff everyday worried about my 18 - 20 year old son. I am sure the coaching staff doesn't want to deal with that as they try to prepare these young men for a tough long season. So why don't we stop acting like just because we walk on the same side walk with them or sit in one class or share the same dormitory as they do it means you know what is going on. Try enjoy the growth of our team and what they can accomplish this year instead of cause a parent who is thousands of miles away worry about their son.

I get what you're saying. For what it's worth, I think it's really only one guy going crazy, and everyone else telling him he is a moron...

You are correct as well so what we all should is not add to his stupidity by weighing in to that part of his conversation. Let's talk about how our team looked or how some of the individual players played.

:+1:

Absolutely. These kids are working so hard, competing every day, to build themselves and the program into something we all can be proud of. They certainly don't need some of the BS being spread by a few members on this site. If you have something to say, that you can't seem to frame in a positive way, It may be best to keep it to yourself. These are young men that deserve our full support, whether they are the #1 guy or the #16 guy. :bad:

Reminder to newer posters: this is an Internet Fans forum for all sorts of discussion. It is also very mild compared to those in the State or conference for that matter. Nothing I hate worse than posters trying to stifle conversation of any kind. CHILLAX!!! That's why it's very nice here when catcat goes hibernating. He tried to always control the convo like a shirtless Putin on horseback.

Youngguns; you are sooooo wrong on sooooo many levels. If they do red shirt Braxton, it is because they do have big plans for him, not the way you state it. Also, talking the way you do is very concerning to everyone connected to the program. It's one thing to speculate about red shirting. It's entirely another to start espousing that a transfer is in line. You are doing a disservice to the kids in the program and exposing yourself as ignorant of the situation.

I'm here everyday and know the situation! It's funny you guys think good players should just wait their turn! They want the chance to compete!!!! If they get beat out that's one thing and they'll work harder to win, but putting a highly recruited player in for 4 minutes of garbage time isn't a chance to compete! I hope he stays, but thought last night the program embarrassed him. More so after watching what players with more playing time did on the court! Don't play him because we have better players, not because he's only a freshman. I wonder if our new recruits know it's about senority.

Wow, you sound every bit of 18 years old.   If you are not allowed to drink under State Law, or would struggle to qualify for a $3,000 Auto Loan, you should post on the Football forum only. I'm sure SWeber could use a friend over there to help him break down the new recruits.
Wow! Take your shots as you force down your geritol and high blood pressure medication, but if we ever hope to do better than making the big dance it's got to be a different approach to the future. Now turn off your Lawrence Welk and call it a day!!! :shocking:

Majority of posters here are in their 30's, some of the more mature posters like wsuprof, olds, utahpirate, born2bleedpurple are the wisest for sure. You just sound dingbat crazy.

Wow! This thing blew up fast. Youngguns please stop insinuating that you are in the know. We all see through that. You read way too much into last night.

Here are my observations from last night:
1. Who ever measured Johnson-Coston at 6'6 needs an eye exam. He is 6'4 at the most with shoes on. I think he is too small to play the 4 consistently (starter minutes) in the Big Sky. I know that Olds is going to throw the Charles Barkley argument at me. But I really think the game and the 4 position has changed, to longer and more athletic 4's.
2. James did not look good last night. He got beat from the frontside, beat from the backside and could not effictively box out the bigs from St. Katherines. The one thing he had of note was that nasty block.
3. I would play Braxton ahead of James and Johnson-Coston. I would like to see the combination more of Hill, Braxton and Bolomboy on the court at the same time. It just might work.
4. Senglin is a force attacking the rim. He is a good free throw shooter and we will many games if he goes to the line as often as he did last night.
5. Golden is the next money shooter for Weber. I like his game alot.

Our starting 5 is amazing. From there it gets a little dicey. I think we will be better out of the gate than we were last year.

A couple of points:
1) I dislike all the in the know talk! Lots of talk of friends with Randy or hanging with the players. Seems like everybody feels like they have an inside source. Didn't hear a lot of comments to Old's numerous references to chats with Randy!

2) Basketball has really evolved the last couple of years and talent wins out every time. It's about can you play or not! Wouldn't want a player to show deference to another due to seniority. I would want every player on the roster to want to be on the court. Play a Freshman if they make the team better.

3) There has been a lot of talk about redshirting and now transfers on this site. I disagree with young guns, but find it hypocritical to chastise him for his comments, but others frequently refer to redshirting players by name.

4) The comments about Hajek and his hair wasn't necessary. He didn't look great on the court, but hopefully it wasn't his hair that impacted his performance.

It's going to be a great year, but the bench is going to need to improve. I'm looking forward to seeing how we play against Utah St.

How else do you explain him missing that dunk the way he did? Dude needs a haircut to be taken seriously, right now anyway, he played like he looked, silly.

I have zero issues with ANY of Olds posts, & enjoy his legitimate insight.

It's not insight when you claim "Randy told me" ......... Legitimate insight is your opinion based on your experience....... Not.... I'm getting inside info from the coach so you better beleive me! It sound like hanging out with the players to me! Same weak sauce!

Our starters all looked solid. Senglin was totally in control. Gittens was more aggressive in all aspects of the game. Golden looked poised. Hill was all of the above and more. Bolomboy looked good, but will only get better as the season goes on.

It is true that there was a drop off at the second level. That is to be expected. I feel that will improve as the season goes on and the rotation gets tighter. What we are seeing now is just the tip of the iceberg.

I know none of you care what I say but MidMajor is absolutely right. NO ONE should be naming players for possible redshirting and imply that they have inside info as that hurts YOUR PROGRAM. Anything that causes possible conflict amongst the team hurts everyone involved. I'm sure none of you want to do damage to a young man's dreams so I think Weber St. would be better served if you root and keep harmful opinions to yourself...........I know,, I know... mind your own business sacstateman...put your own son in the place of the kids being spoken about and I'm sure you would have a different opinion

You are absolutely right sacstatesman. Even though some on this forum may have attended a practice or two, talked to a player or two, talked to a coach or two, or in the case of one poster, washed their jock straps, no one on this site has been to all of the practices, all of the team meetings, and all of the coaches or player meetings. None of us knows what will happen with the playing time decisions or red shirting decisions. As fans, we like to speculate about these things and that is OK, in my opinion, until it gets too personal or the speculation gets to be damaging to any individuals involved.

I've tried to keep things general and positive. It's not always easy, I'll keep trying. :dunce:

I'm not going to say who is in the know and who isn't. If you are then you should only post those things that are for sure in the process of happening. If you know of a players dissatisfaction with the program, then you definitely need to keep that to yourself. If you are a family member or friend thinking that you can pressure a coach to play your son or friend from a fans forum, wow, you are truly misguided and couldn't be more wrong. Coaches don't care about forums. Okay...so moving on...As for the game. As for Hajek getting a chance over a freshman, YES, I do think, in an Exhibition game, he does and has earned that opportunity to prove that he deserves mins. If another player is better, when it counts, you can pretty much guarantee that Rahe is going to play the player who is going to help the team more. THIS WAS AN EXHIBITION! Yes, the Senior does deserve the chance to prove himself in this instance.

THESE ARE TOTALLY MY OPINIONS...feel free to contend them as much as you'd like (SIR VELO you wank):

Bolomboy: had a handful of turnovers that shouldn't have happened. He got stripped, I think, three or four times and then missed two dunks. His defense was pretty soft too. Okay, for an exhibition game. That is why they have them. Chance to work out the kinks. He will be fine. I'm not too worried.

Hajek: Love his efforts and his energy. But, he just didn't seem comfortable. He does continue to coach the other guys and help them understand what they can do to improve. You could tell that Braxton's screens were better on Saturday than the Purple and White game. Maybe that was from Hajek. He does have experience playing at this level.

Golden: He is going to be a star here at Weber. Very Bamforthesque! I like how he can hit the 3, create his own shot, and most importantly, hit the mid-length jumper. I believe, He was 100% when shooting from inside the arch.

Senglin: Yeah...he is the teams leader and plays well with Golden. That will only improve as the season moves on. Scary dynamic Duo.

Gittens: Yikes, he is sooo quick and it seems his shooting has, right now, improved. Buzz Cut had it out for him on Saturday. A couple of really dumb calls but they should help him in the long run. Help tighten up his game. He pushed it a couple of times. Needs to slow things down in some situations. He will get there.

Hill: Well...He has definitely improved. His shot is better, and he definitely has more speed. His defense is a bit slow when he is playing the wing and on the perimeter, but in the paint he is scary good.

Coston: Once he gets more comfortable. He should turn into a far better player. He will get there. I really like him but I see him more on the wing than as a 4. He is undersized. He got pushed out too often when going for a rebound. He needs to be tougher on the boards.

Braxton: He was running the court really well. He is far more mobile than Hajek and bigger than Bolomboy. Weber will need him. I think by conference he will be the main backup at the 5.

Jefferson: I know there is a lot of controversy about Braxton, but have we all forgotten that Jefferson was also a 3+ Star recruit? He seemed a lot more comfortable than in the P&W game. He is a scorer and has the ability and potential to really be a player who can create. His play was exciting. He is going to be a great player for the Cats.

Richardson: He made the most of his time and did well. I really hope he decides to red-shirt. With a year in the system and to hone his shot, he will become an absolute beast of a player. He has such great potential.

Hunter: I'll be honest, he has a long way to go. He had some nice passes and did some really good things, but to come in and play the point, in Rahe's system, is going to take some time. He is going to have some definite growing pains. He has great court vision and will be an assist machine. We shouldn't expect too much scoring from him right away. He is the next Jordan Richardson.

I really like our starting 5, but we definitely lose something with our next 5. I think once they get comfortable playing Rahe's system things will become a bit tighter and they will play better. It'll just take some time for them.

2 cents on Braxton issue, Number one, Hajek looks awful, & I'm not just talking his hair. (It needs to go, he looks like he's from the backwoods of Idaho) its embarrassing to see his mullet flapping when he's over shooting the rim and barely hits glass against St. Katherine bigs of all bigs, bricking free throws like he's never held a ball before. Panos looked All-American his Senior year compared to Hajek after 5.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. I know it's hard to come back from knee injuries (two in his case), but Hajek looks like a total liability out there. Horrible shooting touch, stupid fouls and overall wreckless play. Short of providing some senior leadership, giving our quality bigs a breather in late-half minutes, and his normal hollering from the bench, I don't see him being of much value this season.

I don't disagree that he had a bad game, but James is going to be a good contributor this year. You can't coach his size and the game Saturday was not a great match up for him. Hard to be his size and be able to match up with a team of guards and small forwards.

He'll show better against a traditional line up! I think his knees are fine!

Were you even there Youngguns? They had a big that was beating James in the paint. He was getting boxed out on the glass like crazy. I see your point if he was playing away from the basket. For the most part he wasn't. He didn't seem focused on offense or defense. You are like good cop bad cop. One minute your posting that Braxton needs more time and is going to transfer and the next minute your posting that James is going to be a major contributor.

Dude.... Taking some Liberty with my post? I said good contributor.... Not major! We need big bodies! Is it the right time to play Braxton? Yes it is, but you can play both players! I also believe if a player is suppose to be a leader for you in the future it makes no sense to not give him court time to develop! Do you not feel that he needs more time on the court?

I admit, wrong to use the T word, but we've had a couple the last two years!

I'd like to see Joel at 4 and use our bulk at 5..... That's my opinion!
