Starting Five!

So he should have spray painted the mullet circus colors to instill fear in the BSC?

I'm not understanding what toughness anyone thinks VanPelt could bring. I'm all for utilizing any talent the kid may have but toughness I don't see-- he's as thick as a toothpick.

James should watch some film on Darren Mahoney. That dude did not score a lot of points, but he was a monster defensive presence and a game changer. He found a way to help his team win by doing all the little things right. He brought toughness, defense, and rebounding. Not to mention, he found a way to get five or six points on put-backs or free throws, nothing fancy but a force to be reckoned with in the paint.

I read this site regularly and really enjoy the comments, but have not posted for a while. A couple of you know that I have a son on the team, and I would prefer to just leave it at that. At the risk of being attacked for my comments I wanted to say a couple of things and then will probably not post again. There are so many great comments about who we should recruit, how players should play, and how the coaches should coach. Through my son I have had the opportunity to get to know all of the players for several years and these are some of the greatest young men I have ever known. When I talk to them I have never heard so many “yes sirs” in my life. I understand that they are required to play well and win. I personally get very frustrated with the losses as well; however, sometimes I wish the player GPA’s showed up in the stat sheets, too.

Perhaps I get to know the players from a little different perspective? I can say that they are working very hard and trying to play to the best of their ability. Basketball makes up a large % of their lives as well as their education. The ones that are not playing well wish they were, and the ones who are not playing as much wish they were, too. I do think this team can do much better and I trust that the coaches will get us there. Reality is, if the team does not meet expectations there will be changes. That is a fact of life. I personally enjoy watching the struggles and growth as much as a W.

From what I have heard the kid has no fear. He is always wearing a mask for a broken nose. When you talk to James or Joel he battles them harder than the opposing teams down low on defense. Beyond that you might be right, we just don't know at this point.

You are absolutely right. These are great kids and have tremendous potential in the game and, more importantly, in life. They all have great value and deserve our respect. I have seen their basketball potential and know that they are not there yet. It's just hard for us fans to have patience and enjoy the development. However, that is exactly what we should be doing. What's best for all of these kids, and the coaches too, is best for all of us in the long run.

Here's hoping that we all can make significant progress toward our potential in the coming months and years. :thumb: :thumb:

I'm going to say it, Richardson should be starting.

PG: Senglin
SG: Gittens
SF: Richardson
PF: Bolomboy
C: Hajek

Hill is the first big and Golden the first guard in...with Coston and Hunter being the next two.

I wanted to concur with Oldrunner. Put in a position to actually speak to most of us face-to-face, you'd find we are very proud of the aspects of the program that you mention. Turning boys into responsible men is one of Rahe's greatest strengths -- and one of the things I really admire about him. As a guy just barely south of 60, I've raised three boys, watched them compete, understood their potential and seen their failings. Besides some typical parental mumblings, none of them were exposed to the emotionally raw nature that message boards take.

So, I would offer the advice to any parent that they steer clear of fan boards. This one has become much more active this year and the opinions are more impassioned and pointed. And that's OK. We hide behind avatars, launch our opinions as if we are actually experts on the subject. We're not. But there are some interesting thoughts and differing viewpoints that do bring more depth to our own understanding. So we read others, get irritated and respond -- or agree and acknowledge. Frustrations after games come out without filters. As a parent, wading through that criticism would be almost impossible. Personally, I wouldn't expose myself to it. There are too many positives (that you've highlighted) that get missed to make it a satisfying experience.

I would like to add something to this.......I've NEVER named any names when speaking of shortcomings of any team.....I only name names when citing something positive.....I believe forums should police themselves to NOT SINGLE OUT AND NAME ANYONE IN A NEGATIVE LIGHT....you can name the team and let the reader single out whomever they think maybe the offending party i.e. (Sac State has been turning the ball over too much), not naming who you think is turning the ball over too much. These kids play as a team and win or lose as a team. Try to show who the adults are.......

Forums are for fans and I would wager most players are smart enough to stay away from the emotion and back-and-forth of said fans. There's nothing wrong with discussing failures or weaknesses. It's nice when it can be done in a constructive, adult way but why tip-toe around where the failure or weakness is (according to us "experts")? Should box scores and other game/season statistics not be made public either on the chance a player feels bad? Nah, I don't see anything wrong with stating positives or negatives about a player, especially in a FAN forum.

Coaches give the same advice to players, for good reason. Coaches also discuss weakness or things players need to do better on, as well as heap praise for the positives. There's nothing wrong with addressing reality instead of pretending it doesn't exist.

I appreciate all the advice and don't get me wrong. I was not trying to change anyone's views or say that you should (or should not) be expressing them. This is a fan forum and you should say what you want. I am a huge basketball fan and personally follow 3 other fan forums for programs that interest me. Whether the players read these or not is of no consequence, I was only trying to share a little different perspective that's all. If you are going to coach, play, or otherwise be involved in D1 basketball you better have some thick skin. I find it interesting and will continue to read and follow.

Yea..., what he said! :thumb: :thumb:

From time to time, this forum needs a little reality. Truth is that nobody wants to get this thing together more than the players themselves. Nobody on this board could hold a candle to the last guy on that bench. I will try to keep that in mind, every time I think about expressing my opinion. :coffee:

I'll admit it...after losses I tend to lose it a bit and I end up writing things I shouldn't. One thing that tends to get forgotten frequently is appreciation for our players and coaches efforts. Playing DI basketball is a full time gig. The season really never ends for our players or coaches. They work hard all year for a few special moments of glory when wins happen but mostly have to settle for hundreds of thankless hours. Yes, for us they represent our school and community. We have a legacy of winning and that's expected by us, but we can't lose sight of the effort, sacrifice, and brutal work these guys give us every day. This season is having its growing pains but we will see the fruits of their efforts. Weber is right there and is becoming a scary program right before our eyes. So much to look forward to. I hope it starts Thursday night against Montana.

Unfortunately Weber got schooled by SUU, a team made up of journeyman. How can a team expect to win when their starting guards go 2-19? With the weak almost non existent defense of Bolomboy and Hill, two journeymen big men (Oliverson and Rawson) had career nights. Point is an equally big problem with no defense played and a shooting guard playing the position. Rahe is a problem also. He doesn't use his backups enough. Our bench was outscored 33-4 last night. SUU played 12 guys with 10 getting significant minutes. We played 9 guys with only 6 getting significant minutes. Our starting 5 was probably exhausted at the end of the game with all of them playing well over 30 minutes each.

Frontcourt Solution: Winning starts with defense. So I say start Hajek at Center and give him at least 20-25 minutes playing time every game. Start Bolomboy at the 4 and play him 20 minutes there with Hill picking up the second 20 minutes. For 15 more playing time Bolomboy can backup at center. Unfortunately, there is no one else to slot into these two positions since Braxton is redshirting and Coston should be playing D2 ball. I don't think Van Pelt will be back with the team next year. He's a good D2 or JC prospect.

Backcourt Solution: Gittens is solid, if not spectacular, at the wing. He will deliver solid defense and 10 points every night with good shot selection. I am surprised at the progress he has made in shooting the 3. Move Senglin to the 2 and play him 25-30 minutes with Richardson backing him up for 10-15 minutes per game. Richardson needs playing time to develop and if he doesn't get it Rahe will have wasted one of his eligibility years for no reason. Have him focus on defense while playing. He has the skills to be a good defender, just doesn't work at it enough. Sit Golden! He has only one "supposed" skill which is shooting the long ball. Reality is that he is more willing than capable. He needs to be playing at a lower level to shine. Sitting him free's up the time needed for Richardson.

Truth is, Weber needs a real point guard. They don't have one today that is ready to take on the load successfully. Senglin will never be a point first. Will always be a scorer first. He is willing to penetrate but has never seen a dish he likes. Play Hunter at the point. Yes, Hunter has potential but he is a ways away from being able to make a difference running a game. At least playing him now gives him development time in real situations. Hopefully Cannon will prove to be better at the point next year.

As for next year: Lose Coston and Golden. Hope that one of the incoming bigs is at the level to help and that Braxton is ready to be a productive starter who can play "D" and give us 8-10 points per game. Give up on the idea that Hill will ever be a three. He will not! Play him where he belongs at the 4. I think Emmanuel Nzekwesi, along with Juwan Williams, will help us next year. But Weber will probably not be at the level we expect again next year. The reality is that Rahe put his eggs in the Bolomboy and Senglin basket a few years ago and that basket has proven to have a few holes in it. They just are not as good as we expected them to be.

Conclusion: Weber is a 500 team. I hope that they don't somehow win the Big Sky conference tourney because it would be embarrassing to see them play in the NCAA's.

Baller.....this is the most objectivity I've ever heard coming from a Weber fan....good, honest post

I'll second that...good analysis 'baller'. Sure some regular posters will have different opinions, but that is what makes it interesting. Wish Coach Rahe would/could read your post 'baller', but knowing his stubborn ways, he'll press on as is. Yes, Arky & others mentioned the long 6 hr drive to Cedar City & SE's Jim Burton column says the Wildcats are missing something this year, experience. How long do we focus on those things, they play a part, but come on, Rahe's decisions sometimes appear to be like forcing a square peg into a round hole with little attention to adjustments needed in player strategy! :twocents:

I think Rahe panicked on the JC's. They are struggling and not improving. Their contributions have been minimal. Weber is trying to live off its reputation, but the truth is this is not a good team and .500 might be a stretch.

True words that Rahe is overplaying his starters and not developing back ups. It's going to be an issue for a couple of years.
