State Approves BH Improvements

From the Trib:

Before adjourning Tuesday, the legislature approved a $14.5 million renovation to Butler-Hancock Hall at the University of Northern Colorado. The revamp is part of a list of higher-education capital construction projects approved by state lawmakers.

Work will include a new air conditioning system and other improvements to the athletics hall, allowing more year-round use.

UNC President Kay Norton said the state money will help UNC develop a public-private partnership to fund a strength-and-conditioning facility at Butler-Hancock. "That's the sort of thing that ought to be privately funded," she said, noting that donors will be sought on the project.

that's an expensive air conditioning system. Does anyone know what else they will do with the money?

Yeah no kidding there is obviously much more to this story than what the Tribune is touching on. I'm sure though that the athletic website will have all the details posted soon.      :x :(

So after going back and reading the article it sounds like this is money earmarked for building maintenance so along with the A/C I'm guessing it will be upgrades and maintenance on other things that aren't that exciting... but 14M seems like a lot so why not just funnel that all to a north end zone team house facility at Nottingham?

Norton's comments don't really make any sense because she is talking about privatly funding a weight room which is great but has nothing to do with the 14M from the state...

Not the best written article I've ever seen, like most in the Tribune it leaves more questions than answers.

Public-Private partenerships often entail a split of costs and revenue. So maybe UNC ponys up half the costs of a better facility and the private company puts up the other half and gets any revenue from renting out the facility.

However $14 million seems like it could damn near replace the entire facility. In 2000 (the most recent year I could find numbers for) the entire replacement cost for BH was estimated at $8-9 million....

Perhaps this is a typo and it is $1.4 million.

I will see if I can dig up some more info.

Update from the Trib today:

Gov. Bill Ritter signed a bill today that will help provide money to the University of Northern Colorado to renovate Butler-Hancock Hall.

Under the bill — SB 233 — UNC will get nearly $11.6 million to help with the renovation of the sports facilities at the hall. In all, the bill appropriates more than $200 million for construction at colleges and universities around Colorado

Kind of another update this comes from the minutes of the Board of Athletic Control meeting in Feb

"Michael Johnson for the UNC Foundation delivered his report on Foundation and fundraising activities and announced that AAD Chris Kiser had resigned to take another position at Wyoming. A search will be done to find a replacement and the job description was being finalized. Efforts at resurrecting the Blue/Gold Club are ongoing, as is increased emphasis on the Fall Sports Kick-off Banquet and Reverse Raffle, all fundraiser devoted to scholarships and support for the Department. A weekly meeting between Advancement and Athletics has been implemented, and communication between the units is being improved. Johnson noted successes in the areas of outreach programs
to donors and alumnae, as well as former players. Fund raising efforts for renovations to Strength and Conditioning spaces are ongoing. In development are Hospitality Suites for Butler Hancock events and a possible relocation and development of the University Athletic Hall of Fame. This year’s fund raising goal of $770,00 in gifts and donations has been reached and surpassed. Johnson also gave an update on the plans for the university Capital Campaign, the culmination of which is now slated to coincide with the 125th Anniversary of the University. The Athletic Department projected allotment of Capital Funds raised will be approximately $10 million for facilities, scholarships, personnel, among other expenses."

More from a meeting in April

"SWA Sherri Frye, substituting for AD Hinrichs who was traveling with baseball, updated the Board about changes in personnel. A permanent business manager, Kristy Watson, has been hired to replace Marla Johnson who is rotating out of the position. The vacancy left by the departure of development officer Chris Kiser is now filled by Jack Maughan who will continue on as wrestling coach but also take on fund raising duties for the Department. Frye was asked to update the Board about the budget for 2008-2009 and noted that the budget will come in somewhere between 7.1 and 7.4 million dollars, well under the lowest comparable budgets of Big Sky Conference schools that begin at 8.5 million dollars. Affecting the budget will be fund raising efforts and expected revenue, some of which are in question. An expected annual $350K NCAA distribution which was supposed to start this year is in question as schools in their first year after reclassification were notified that there would be a two year lag before the distributions would begin. This grant-in-aid payout was targeted for sports scholarships, as was the special assistance funding projected for this year. Furthermore, the expected 9% tuition increase for the institution, as well as increases in program and other fees, will make scholarship and student support more expensive for the Department. Creative solutions will be explored to offset budget shortfalls. Educational efforts will be launched to better inform university stakeholders about UNC student-athletes and the Department in relation to budget and funding. On a positive note, Frye explained that the Department had received
a summer school financial aid windfall resulting from scholarship savings from the university. Summer school programs are helpful for student-athlete degree progress, APR scores, early graduation, bridge programs, and are also helpful in attracting high ability student-athletes in recruiting.
Jack Maughan, wrestling coach and Development officer, then gave a brief overview of upcoming fundraising efforts on campus in the areas of annual giving, the upcoming Capital Campaign, and major gifts. Maughan also emphasized the need for the restart and expansion of the university’s Blue/Gold Booster Club."

It's going to be another tight budget year I just hope we can fund the scholarships because if not it's a slipperly slope you're stepping on...

Nice find GoBears. Looks like a mixed bag there. We're still behind every one with our budget and the NCAA isn't distributing that money that we were counting on. I am with Blofeld, I hope we're still at 63 scholarships for football. Glad to see the Blue and Gold Club is making strides. I'll write a check as soon as I get info about it. Hopefully you guys will too. Donations are up but we've still got a long way to go.

I'll cut a check as soon as I can see some updated materials, and what they actually plan to do with the money.

Just think about it all you Hinrichs-Haters. He won't control a dime of the money! That alone should be enough reason for some of you to donate.
