SUU Round 2

There were 2 rematches in the first round. Furman vs Elon and Kennesaw State vs Samford

During the regular season Elon beat Furman and Samford beat Kennesaw.

During the playoffs both Furman and Kennesaw got their revenge. NOW IT'S OUR TURN!

SUU's best defense in the first game was targeting Cantwell with illegal hits. I think that is Warren's MO, teach his players to cheat and hope the refs don't call everything.

That is how their basketball team plays as well.

Got my tickets. Staying in St. George, to do a little biking on their trails. Should be a good weekend. A win would cap everything off nicely.

 If Colter wasn't maintaining that "site" it would be all cobwebs, since about the last time Weber came away with a Cedar City win.

I just noticed Weber is the latest start time of the day by far, 3-and-a-half hours after the next latest, I think. That seems strange to me as Cedar has elevation and Winter, and no one outside Utah or possibly the BSC could care less about this game.

Thanks to the warm fall we've been having, the weather for the game should be great. Temps in the 50s/40s and no precip.

Read that standing room only is available for the game on Saturday. Should be a fun one in Cedar. Really like our chances of pulling the upset.

HC Warren said this morning they are hoping to get 11,000 to the game. The stadium is supposed to seat 8,500 with a 10,000 max capacity. That would be one packed place with 11,000.

Man, I sure hope that game on October 14th was an anomaly because statistically Weber has been the better team almost across the board.

I was intrigued by how equal statistically Weber and WIU were and after a great, competitive game with them I created a simple statistical comparison that used 15 offensive and defensive season stats for both Weber and WIU and their opponents. I scored and totaled the differences from Weber's perspective and divided by the number of games played. The result was +2.5. When I saw that and knew it was a 2 point win I was amazed at what I'm sure is pure coincidence. Still, wanting to have some fun with it, I created the same thing for the SUU game and the result is +7.1. If Weber wins by 7 I might take my talents to Vegas! Seriously, though, I hope this bodes well for Weber and supports the common belief that SUU did not compete against the real 2017 Weber team.

Taking a close look at scoring by quarter makes me nervous and wanting a better second half team offensively. It makes me nervous because if memory serves, the first SUU game was 13-13 in the first half when Cantwell went out just before the half. Scoring defense-wise, Weber is about the same vs opponents between halves and nearly identical between the 1st/3rd & 2nd/4th quarters, giving up 8.6 pts in the first half and 8.3 in the second half. Offensively, it's a different story-- 23.8 pts (8.8 & 15.0) in the first half and only 10.7 (5.3 & 5.4) in the second half. With SUU, they have defensive consistency too, giving up 14.6 pts in the first half and 13.1 in the second. Offensively, they are patterned similar to Weber by quarter but have more consistency between halves, 21.1 pts (8.0 & 13.1) in the first half and 14.3 (7.6 & 6.7) in the second half. Bottom line with all this is that even though Weber beats SUU in scoring difference between their own opponents (17.7 to 7.6) compared to each other Weber loses by 1.0, this due to the offensive letdown in the second half. Ya, the game was tied with Cantwell in the game but the 1st/2nd half scoring played out similar to the season stats without the pick-6 before halftime.

<t>Holy Hannah, I wish I was going. I have 2 son's and a teenage grandson that live down South that would love to take up 4 more seats. TALLHAD, you know me and know why I cant make it. This chemo/ immunotherapy is kicking my butt but I'm not a quiter. I'll come out of this stronger. My focus is on the team. They have the "lets git er done " mentality like I do. You're only beaten if you quit.<br/>
There is no room for quiters in this game. GOOOO WILDCATS!!!</t>

I know there has been some concern about Bruce and Downs being available tomorrow. However, Weber was able to beat WIU without two starters on the OL. Cannon and Latu are really good and aren't starting because Bruce and Downs are that much better. No matter, we are going to be fine whoever is playing on the OL. I think that says something about where the team is now, compared with a few years ago. When Jay first got here, the OL had a couple of solid players on it, now, it is legitimately two deep.

I think we win by 7 tomorrow. Not because we are that much better than SUU. We win because Cantwell has the clutch play maker factor that you can't teach. He will keep our defense rested by putting together long drives. Tomorrow SUU will be beat at their own game. Going to enjoy some greasy fried chicken tomorrow night.
