The PAC/MWC Dominoes Begin to Fall

đź‘€

The look of resignation on their faces let's me know they really believe this to be true.
The TV man cometh, and the TV man taketh.

TV and markets are the top drivers of realignment. It was always that straight forward. Very excellent confirmation of what has been speculated on, now Dr. Wood just needs to deliver on the formalization of the stadium plans and then the real work begins. What an amazing week.

If what I've heard is true, all the existing PAC fanbases are going to lose their collective minds before the end of the year. Brains will really start to melt when the leaks/strategic releases of information pick up in about two weeks.

The PAC fanbase has been getting leaks and hints for weeks now and refusing to take them seriously.

Amanda Christovich wrote an article a month ago that said Sac State has had conversations with multiple FBS conferences. Yet fans on Twitter are acting as if Sac State is doing everything for show.

If those fans want to have the best TV deals possible for their conference, they better come to terms with Sacramento being a must have. The prestigious and historical programs already walked away. That ship has sailed.

Those new PAC-12 schools and their fans will also want to acknowledge that they didn't "earn" their way into the PAC-12. The conference fell apart, opening up an opportunity. The same opportunity Sac State is trying to exploit.

Yes… we will have done haters. 100%. Especially from Fresno state. They are some very jealous people at our growth plan and build projects.

I don’t care. I will only be embarrassed if our teams are not competitive. If we have competitive teams they will shut up and after few weeks of jealous tears.

Football & Basketball better get serious. New mens coach in BB 2-0 vs weak teams but his players look inspired and united.

Recently named "best" arena in the NBA. And for good reason.

But, yes, the vast emptiness will be a poor look. Unless they can drum up more interest in the program.
When Gonzaga visits G1C you guys seriously think it will only have a few hundred?

I’d expect f capacity is 17K? That 5000 would attend?

Sac is a basketball city! We need big time promotion, give away, etc get community to games.

Make it fun and entertaining

Sacramento State plans to move out of the outdated and cramped gym, called “The Nest” and into “The Well” on campus starting in December, school president Luke Wood said last week. The Nest seats 1,012, one of the smallest venues in all of college athletics, and though charming, it is not sustainable long term. The Well would initially have a capacity of 3,000 with plans to make it 6,000 in the coming years.

I don't know how realistic it is to use the Well for any significant period of time, but 6k would put them on par with Gonzaga. For higher profile games Gonzaga sometimes uses the cities larger arena, which happens often for college basketball programs. St. Johns, for example, doesn't always play at MSG. They have a smaller on campus venue for at least half their games.

My concern is weekday games in downtown. Personally, I have a hard time seeing my self fighting traffic to go see a game mid-week, but maybe there are others that would be more committed to the cause.

Pac twitter is already having issues stomaching the realization that the conference is out of options and we are a legitimate addition, but Fresno will take it especially hard as one of their narratives is that "Fresno owns the Central Valley" and claims Sacramento as their territory (lol). I'm a SoCal transplant and don't really jump into inter-valley beef but even I know that is a delusional claim.

This Twitter post sums it up perfectly:

I was only commenting on GCM asserting that it will be empty. I don’t pretend to know either way.

Like you, I suspect that when legit FBS opponents start coming to town, yes, the attendance will be greatly increased. Especially so if the Hornets program is competitive with these programs.

Just hope Sac is committed. Took us a decade to be competitive in the Sky. Hopefully, we can come out swinging.

But that decade happened under different leadership and those ill prepared.

If the Hornets had hired a Mark Orr and Troy Taylor type back when they joined the Big Sky — it wouldn’t have taken a decade.

Same can happen here. If Wood/Orr knows what they’re doing and hire the right people, it isn’t going to take a decade to be competitive.

The SAC metro area is rich with talent and the pipeline to SoCal (kids wanting to go to school far from home) will only get deeper if/when this program is competing at the highest level.

We aren’t likely to ever outdraw USC for Cali kids, but this program could start to draw kids away from the other FBS programs in CA as an up and comer.

Hire the right people and continue the winning.
