The PAC/MWC Dominoes Begin to Fall

This is strictly a CSU vs UC budget issue than anything else. R1 & R2 designation is determined by how much annual spending is budgeted towards research and the amount of doctorates offered. Sac State just earned R2 status. SDSU is the only CSU that is R1. Oddly enough, Cal Poly (SLO) is neither R1 or R2 status. Most, if not all, of the UC's are R1.

As more CSU alums become state legislature reps/lobbyists, more state budget dollars will be directed towards the CSU and doctorate restrictions for the CSU will be eased.

Completely agree with your 2nd paragraph.

CSU budget comes out of the general budget with every other state service.
UC budget has its own line item and not shared with other agencies.

If Sac State obtains those downtown facilities they ought to dedicate a majority of space to research functions. I agree R1 should be the goal.

R1 is more difficult for CSU schools because my understanding is they are limited in certain programs they are able to offer. It is very impressive for SDSU to get there. I believe our current school administration is modeling themselves after SDSU in more ways than one.

The Placer campus and hopefully a downtown campus will be huge for the schools potential growth and influence. Glad they are finally being aggressive.

Dr. Wood interestingly commented on this. "Friend"

Are both schools going down the same path?

Dr Wood I imagine does have friends at schools that should be supporting us for PAC (FSU & SDSU). Dr wood should have then step up and publicly sponsor the common sense decision to strengthen the west coast footprint.

Help minimize travel Costs substantially.when compared to east coast travel similar to Stan / Cal ACC

Should the PAC move ever happen I really feel for the basketball program, no matter what facility, coach, focus on recruiting etc… that will be a brutal yearly conference schedule. And if St Marys gets added it only gets worse…

USU 24-5 (in the tourney)
SDSU 19-7 (in the tourney)
Boise 20-8 (probably in)
CSU 19-9 (on the bubble)
Gonzaga 22-8, no explanation needed
St Mary’s #23, 26-4, Zags worst nightmare
OSU 20-10, beat the Hornets by 37 this season
Wazzu 17-13, ‘24 Tourney, ‘22 and ‘23 NIT
🥴🥴

And then Fresno 5-23 who squeaked by the Hornets to open the season

BBall is probably the single most reason Sac is not going to the PAC. Simply laughable on all fronts, even with an ‘upgrade’.

I don't think so, if that were the case then Fresno State would have never been considered. Their hoops program hasn't been notable in decades and now they have the gambling scandal hanging around their neck. As good as the PAC will be as a hoops conference, football will always be the driver that keeps them relevant as its every school's main revenue driver wrt athletics.

The ploy for PAC membership was always rooted in the PAC needing members, and in our case a member in a new sizable market. Texas State is the PAC's last remaining option to maintain its FBS status. The PAC isn't taking TSU because they want to, they will take them because they have to. Depending on how realignment shakes out, that could be what gets us an invite.

The next shoe to drop in the PAC saga will be if they and the MW come to a settlement on all the poaching fees. Depending on how that works out, it could mean the PAC poaches another MW member (UNLV) if there is enough money to do so...or the PAC just waits until the next round to grab them. I don't see the PAC staying at 8 FB members for an extended period of time.

At a macro level, the power leagues are starting to flex their muscles more and more. I think the market will dictate that they be their own super league (aka a new subdivision). Wood just needs to make sure he positions Sac State to be in the tier below the power subdivision, which he is on track in doing.

In the meantime we'll need to get meaningful facilities built (stadium and events center) and get MBB competitive in the Pavillion. G1 is more than sufficient for PAC play, but MBB has to see dramatic improvement under the new HC.
