Thoughts on the game

Congrats to the Eagles on a super game vs the Huskies. Looks like BLM is picking up where he left off against us only better and those towering receivers are awesome. Wish I could say the same for us as the Middies just gave us an old fashioned butt whooping plus knocked out our starting QB.We could run on them and move the ball through the air reasonably well but couldn't contain that triple option. Oh well back to the drawing board. Good luck for your season to some good fans and who knows perhaps we can still meet again.

Thanks Henduster. Yeah, the difference in BLM between last year at this time and now is huge. How badly did Sasek get hurt? Hopefully nothing too serious.

To All,
I have seen the game twice now, and the score haven't changed. :) :) Our team played and outstanding game, :thumb: however, turnovers will kill you, as we discovered. I remember talking to Gabe Jackson on Friday night after the Volleyball Game against Boise State, which the ladies won 3-2 in games. I said to Gabe, should we play error free football, we will beat UW, Gabe agreed. 4 turnovers, and we almost pull the game out. That said, we need to suck it up and get ready for the rest of the games ahead.

I saw Paul Ena, and Zach Gehring yesterday, they stated it was he longest ride back to Cheney that evening.
Caleb Worthington, Jase Butorac, Ashton Miller, and the rest of the Offense held their own. I was impressed with the entire Offensive line. I saw Evan Day got his 1st College sack, great job. Grant Williams, David Gaylord, Paul Ena, Renard Williams, TJ. Lee, Will Katao, and others playing their Butts off.

We outplayed UW, except where it counts, the score, we lost by 3 points.  So close but yet so far. Had the last past that was thrown a little shorter, maybe Kauf could have taken it in for the victory. Wishful thinking, we must now get ready for the long trip to Vermillion, hope I spelled it correctly.

The way our team played on Saturday, and the National Championship in our corner, I just hope we can get the support from all our Eagle Fans, and really fill Roos Field the 4 games we have there. Have a "Great Labor Day" to all and their families, & Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace p.s. I have seen some new Billboards around the City, with the National Championship Team on it. Great. Vic

I drove my other two son's up from Katy, texas to watch the game and they are moving back in with their brothers for the season. After 2,500 miles of driving I have a few thoughts about the game. First, my appologies for guaranteeing a win. I was wrong, but not by much. Seattle and the stadium are absolutey beautiful and I met a lot of great Huskie fans. I had tickets in a terrible location, so I sat with some die hard Husky fans and they were great. My first thought was, "Where were all the EWU fans"? It was a three hour drive and I could see maybe 500 people in Red. Maybe they were wearing a different color, worrying about the outcome. I could be wrong about the number of fans but I will tell you the players were also disappointed at the lack of attendance by their fans. If Cheney and Spokane don't start supporting this team for winning a NC and playing their butts off, they don't deserve the team they have. What a shame? Katy and Cheney are about the same size. When Katy HS travelled to other towns to play, San Antonio, 281 miles, they had over 10,000 fans attend a game. We can't get that at a HOME game.

The people on this board are all great fans, because they care. Where are the rest of you? Students, Alumni, Locals. I know school is out, but I believe most of the students are from the Washington area. You need to start supporting this incredible team. They deserve nothing less. I think it could also impact future recruiting. No one wants to play for a school that doesn't support them.

wineguy,
I agree with you, those are the same things I talk about. I saw today, where we still are the #1 Team in "Flathead.com". I just hope the way our team plawed UW, and the National Championship" this will get more attendance, but I doubt it. Hope they make me out to be a liar.

We have had nothing but problems getting fans out to see our team, some would rather go elsewhere.
Do you know if the team is practicing today? Hope Coach give the the day off, rest up some of those sore bodys. I will be heading out there to check it out. If you are sticking around for the day, I would like to see if you can make it out to Northern Quest sbout 5:30pm today. Coach Beau wll be there. I promise to buy you a dinner should you show. If not, have a safe trip back to Texas, and remember you will always have great fans in this area. Have what is left of the "Labor Day" a great one. Go Eagles!!!!!Vic Wallace

Agree completely. We'll find out on the 24th what kind of a sports town Spokane is. The game was carried on the regional Fox affiliate and being against UW, I'm sure got pretty good ratings. The bottom line is if folks in Spokane saw the arial show that Eastern put on, and all that pure football talent on the field, and they don't show up in droves on the 24th to see it live; It will be pretty obvious there just isn't any appreciation of football in that town.

This team plays some highly entertaining football at the highest level.

My sense of it is that there were way more than 500. Hell, there were a couple hundred within eye sight of our tailgate, and that was one small corner of the E1 lot. Much of the west end zone was red and there were enclaves of red sprinkled elsewhere as well. Plus, it was Labor Day weekend, travel expenses in a down economy etc.

Don't get me wrong. I'm rarely pleased by our attendance and Spokane sucks when it comes to support. But baby steps...

BTW Wineguy, that kid of yours... :notworthy:

My guess was probably in the area of 2 to 3 thousand EWU fans there. The numbers cited earlier in that article were from earlier last week and only included tickets purchased through the EWU ticket office. Many purchased outside of that. I went back and watched the replay of the game and I noticed how loud our crowd was on some of the great plays in that game as well.

Bottom line is attendance has always been a struggle due to where we are located but measured increases year by year will happen as long as we keep winning. There should be a great crowd for the home opener.

i thought we had a pretty good crowd there. The visitors section had a nice crowd and there were lots of folks dispersed throughout the stadium. i thought i saw quite a bit of red in the end zone as well. Overall not bad. In reference to home crowds i really feel like the key to getting great crowds like we did the beginning of last year is getting max student participation. And some of the lazy alums in Spokane need to get off their behinds and get out and watch this great team.

Wineguy... glad to hear you had a great time. How's Bo's knee? I saw he had a heavy-duty looking lineman's brace on his left knee. The other Beau didn't mention it in the coaches show when talking about injuries, so I assume it's just minor?

I was sitting in the north end, upper deck, surrounded by rabid dawg fans. It was interesting because I had a 28 year old UW T-shirt on (47 yrs a game attender is hard to deny), while I was proudly wearing my Red/Black eagles hat. Got some really confused looks by the fans around us, not really sure where my allegiance lied. It started by them saying that EWU really shouldn't be here, bla bla bla, and that they were only here for the $$$. When BLM started dissecting the UW secondary, I turned to them and let them know that they were in for a long day if they couldn't put any more pressure on him than that. My hat off to the offensive line for some great protection, as well as the coaching staff for some great play calling. We had them on their heals all day. As the game rolled on, the frustration around me was quite humorous to me, because I have been in that same mind set for years under the previous Willingham years. Fans were using terms like "lucky catches, new starters with no experience...",etc, as excuses for EWU still hanging around in the game. I would just point to the stats board and ask them why we had twice as many first downs and 200 yards more than they did? That would generally shut them up.

As the game wore on, I'd stand up and look around and see more red every time...even a dedicated fan who was wearing his wool letterman's jacket in 85 degree heat. There were quite a few Eagles up in the higher elevations of the stadium, but were drowned out by the boos when a great play occured, which happened with great consistency.

The defense also was awesome, flying to the ball, putting pressure on Price, and keeping them from the really big plays, and showing the UW O line that they were meeting their match. All in all, I was very proud of our men and how they fought for 60 minutes and were there to have a chance at the end. Great things are ahead this year, and I'm excited to see what transpires.

GO EAGLES!!!

wineguy;
Your concerns are valid. I have not understood why we do not draw better over the years. People drive all the way to Pullman to see the Cougars lose and will not drive 20 miles to see a nat'l champ caliber team. According to Troy season tickets sales are especially strong after our strong showing against the Huskies. The biggest problem is getting money to improve facilities. Lisa Brown, one of the most influential legislators in Washington is an Eastern alum and used to work on campus, does not show much interest in helping the University.
Our facilities are as bad in the Big Sky as the Huskies are in the Pac 12. WE NEED MONEY but if we continue to win and give the University good exposure maybe it will come.
Now for the fan base. As game day becomes more of an entertainment event we will get more loyal fans.

Not me...The players need appreciation from every live body in Cheney and Spokane. This team is going to put up phenominal numbers and will hopefully make it back to Frisco, (so I can see another game) :). You can skew the numbers any way you want, 2,000 isn't enough for this caliber of game. I am sure it will be packed for the home opener against MSU. It's still a shame that we didn't get a better turn out in Seattle to support the football team.

I made a thread right after the game congratulating you guys on the way your team played and the EWU talent as a whole. In my opinion, you deserved that game more than us, and certainly looked like you wanted it more.

That said, we absolutely did play a vanilla scheme. If you would have watched any of our games last year, the contrast should be glaring and obvious. On the defensive side of the ball, Nick Holt had me scratching my head the entire game. I was fuming at his decision not to change up coverages. When you have a QB destroying your zone with quick slants off a three step drop, you switch to press coverage. Inexplicably, Holt did nothing to change the schemes. Furthermore, on those third and long plays he dropped everyone back and rush only three. This had me literally yelling at my TV. I don't care if you're playing a high school team, you give a receiver enough time and he WILL get open. For whatever reason, UW did not play their usual style of ball. This is a fact and really not up for any legit debate. However, it's not an excuse. Eastern is that good, and UW should be ashamed for taking them lightly.

You're right Wineguy, that West end should've been packed. A win over the Huskies would've opened a lot of eyes, but the Eagles still deserve the attention and support. A lot of people who would normally pull for Eastern unfortunately still give their allegiance to WSU (Gonzaga come basketball season). Lots and lots of Eagle alumni and students still see Eagle football as a BIG step down in the football popularity contest. No matter that our team is hugely talented. These people are holding out for the day when the Cougars return to a Rose Bowl, or any bowl for that matter. They've put all their "fan eggs" in the Cougar basket and can't bear the thought of admitting that somehow, someway EWU has figured out how to regularly win bigger with much less. They'll say stuff like "Of course the Cougars are better than the Eagles, they're in the PAC12", or "Sure we got pounded 42-0, but that was the might Arizona State Sun Devils we just played". Slowly but surely, this perception is dying as the Eagles continue to succeed. Another trip to Frisco would speed things up.
By the way, was that your car I saw last Friday on I90 westbound with the Texas plates and Katy auto dealership sticker? I told my wife there wasn't much chance it could be anyone else. Thanks for your support.
