Time for Changes

Review of Staff
Paul Peterson
Bill Laveroni
Aaron Ingram
Fred Kelly
Tyler almond
Anthony Parker
Marshall Sperbeck

I would like to hear everyone's thoughts on current staff.
Peterson – Offense was anemic when Sperbeck was calling the plays. It will return to that level when Peterson is hired away and if he is not replaced with someone just as capable.
Laveroni – What Chi said. imo OL played better when Riley was here, a lot returns so we should see improvement next season so I guess that means the jury is still out.
Ingram – What Chi said. Seems like we have health issues at RB EVERY season.
Kelley – What Chi said. His hire made sense for the open OL coach spot, makes no sense as the ST coach spot. Maybe ST gets better since he has had a year to figure it out?
Almond – No idea, seems to be just another cog in the failure that is Hornet defense.
Parker – What Chi said. He should have been sent packing immediately following the final game of the season.
Sperbeck – What Chi said. It’s evident that this program has plateaued under his tenure. Things should be better (playoff appearances, winning the meaningful games), things could be worse (see Moosh era). He has 2 years to figure something out.

Any word on new DC
Someone posted on the Weber forum that Jody Sears will be your new DC. If true, sucks for you.
A move like that wouldn’t surprise me…but I’m not sure if anything could be worse than what our D did this past season.

I wouldn't be opposed to Sears as our new DC. His defenses at EWU were typically very talented; things just didn't work out for him as a HC (they more rarely do for defensive-minded HCs). I think he would bring a great deal of experience to the position.

If the Sears selection turns out to be a rumor only, I hope that Sperb has given given Jamar Cain some consideration. He is/was the D-line coach for the cowboys to started the season. Then, promoted to DC for remainder of the season. He was at Cal Poly before that and is a Sacto native. I haven't heard if Bohl plans to retain him at Wyo.

Ok I get it a local guy to the hornets but lets not sit here and pretend that Wyoming was a great defense, they actually got worst as the year we t on, that doesn't put it on him at all. I do imagine a minority does need to be hired

Cain came out to recruit Sacramento when at Poly, nice guy but was always very quick in and out. Not sure how relationship was with the rest of HS coaches. But didn't really get a chance to know him

While I agree that the Wyo D wasn't anything special, you're not seeing the bigger picture. He joined the cowboy staff this season after the impressive play of his mustang D-line vs. the cowboys the season before- Cal Poly beat Wyo at the line of scrimmage and for the game. He was only on the cowboy staff for half-a-season as a position coach before being promoted to DC. That indicates some, if not all, of the following: 1) rising young coach 2) very good football IQ 3) connects well with players & colleagues 4) knows how to teach skills 5) a good leader.

Being a local guy is a plus. A fact I wasn't aware of until I read his bio.

He was one of the best recruiters on Cal Poly's staff when he was there. Sac would be very fortunate to have Jamar on their staff.

Looks like Parker will coach the safeties. Almond is still at LB's, Gigli and Roberson gone.

No mention of DC. Maybe Sperbeck will take that over himself.

Jamar to North Dakota State. Looks like he will not be a hornet

I guess Craig Bohl didn't think he was DC material, that's good enough for me!

NDSU has been the best FCS program for the last 3 years; there isn’t a better FCS gig out there. With Parker remaining on staff, I wonder how many qualified DC’s will pass up the Sac opening to avoid a potentially toxic work environment.

That's Coach Sperbeck's call, he knows Parker's mindset better than we do. Some guys can keep a demotion/ criticism in perspective, some can't. I can't see a qualified DC passing on a opportunity just because the former DC is still on staff. If they are that insecure and unfocused you wouldn't want them anyhow.
They should have the National Football Coaches Convention this month, maybe Coach Sperbeck can touch base with a qualified candidate there.

So how did the DC demotion situation work out under Sperbeck last time? This is just another “do the same thing and hope for different results” example under Sperbeck.

IMO Sperbeck had 2 ways to approach the defensive coordinator situation; Option 1: Axe Parker, hire a new DC who can make changes as deemed necessary. Option 2: Axe all the D coaches and hire a new DC to build a new staff from scratch.

Whatever happens I hope a DC is brought on soon. National LOI Day is just a few weeks away.

Actually despite our frustration with the defense this season Parker was a upgrade over who he replaced. I don't claim to know any of these guys or their personalities, I met Coach Sperbeck once a couple of years ago at a high school track meet. I don't have a dog in this fight one way or the other.. My point is that some people react to change/ criticism differently than others. Maybe the last time the DC was changed Sperbeck thought that the other coaches released were unconformable with the changes and might become a distraction to the program, again his call. I also hope they name a DC soon but if it takes a little longer to find a quality candidate instead of the first guy that comes along it will help us in the long run.

That doesn't mean he wasn't DC material. All that means is that Cain wasn't the DC for Bohl's style of play. He landed in a solid situation regardless. The top FCS team brought him on board.

Looks like the other name I brought up, Larry Kerr of LAVC, was hired by UNCO to be the bears' DC.

He wasn't hired at NDSU as a DC he is coaching defensive ends. Still a good gig but not as much responsibility involved.

Yes. And Bohl is now at Wyo, not NDSU. In fact, the the current DC, Klinemann (?), will be the bison HC next season. Again, that mean he's not DC material. Chances are, Klinemann already had someone in mind before hiring Cain to be his DE coach.

Nevertheless I suspect that Cain was not promoted so much on the basis of skill-set but availability when the previous Wyoming coach fired the DC mid season. I would like to see us get a DC with a established good DC track record, not just filling in for half a season.
