Uh oh....

Dear Campus Community,

We have received serious and concerning allegations of NCAA violations involving our men’s basketball program. I want you to know we are committed to a thorough and complete investigation of the allegations that have been made.

To assist us in the preliminary review, we retained an outside legal firm that specializes in NCAA compliance and infractions matters. After its initial work, the firm advised us to notify the NCAA of the issue, which we have done. The NCAA, which commended us for our preliminary inquiries and correctly following protocol, has joined us in the investigation into the matter. We have and will continue to cooperate fully with the NCAA.

This is about more than potential NCAA rule violations. It is about the integrity of our program and therefore the integrity of our university. It is about the example we set for all of our students, the lessons that they learn by being part of our university community, and the values we demonstrate through our actions.

Athletic Director Darren Dunn and I are committed to ensuring the integrity of the men’s basketball program. In light of that commitment, and in the best interests of the program moving forward, we have made the difficult decision to terminate the contract of head coach B.J. Hill. We have placed the assistant coaches on administrative leave while we continue collaborating with the NCAA on the investigation.

Consistent with NCAA expectations, we won’t be able to comment further until the investigation concludes. I will follow up with a campus memo at that time.

We will examine ourselves honestly and unsparingly, take whatever actions are necessary, and we will emerge a better and stronger UNC because of it.

Sincerely,

Kay Norton

I feel badly for the kid that just signed this week. At least we will have an excuse for no post season play.

There's a silver lining here, the program was going down hill (  ) anyway! Opportunity for a new start!

Now that is Insanity!!!! Character and integrity are two traits adults should have. They are traits head coaches have the ability to teach young athletes. I always questioned if Hill had them, let alone the ability to teach them.

As they say, karma is a bitch.

BJ is a class A douche bag. I'm not surprised at all that there is an NCAA investigation, probably initiated due to all the players he's screwed over the years. The funniest thing is this comes on the day the Sam writes a "woe is me" article about all the players jumping shit. Sam again looks like a brown nosing butthole.

I'm glad there will be a house cleaning but I have absolutely no faith in Dunn making a hire that will be anything but mediocre.

BTW, I'm hearing there are quite a few football players walking away from Collins too - to mention another high quality, high class individual!

This is a bad situation for anyone to come into. Most likely because they're "serious" violations we will lose scholarships, post season play, etc. I don't even know who to start with as far as a replacement. I'll waive my magic wand and some how get Boyle back here.

Bearcub, Dunn has made some good hires, example the womens basketball coach and the wrestling coach.Maybe it can happen again.

Agreed. He will hire someone good, but who is going to want this job with incoming sanctions?

Any word on the street regarding the wrong doing? Most of the time these type of thing get leaked. Maybe the sanctions won't be so bad.

Regarding a hire there is always someone hungry for a D1 coaching job. When you think about it, there are only a little over 340 positions available in the entire country. Lets hope UNC can find a coach that the players will look to as that "Father figure".

We did self-report them, but remember the NCAA hammers mid-majors bad. They treat the bigger programs with kid gloves, but UNC will be punished harshly.

Troy Coverdale commented on his Facebook page yesterday that he was told it's a Level 1 violation, the most severe.

This is a travesty! I don't everything that has gone on within the program the past few years but BJ Hill was simply a demanding individual who wanted the best for his team and more importantly the best for his players. His guys (Beitzel, Proctor, Barden, Michael) were all vocal about how much they admired his leadership and how he genuinely cared for them. Tom Izzo gave his take on why kids transfer so much as of recent and I think he's spot on (Link below) College basketball is hard! And when kids face some real-life adversity for the first time in their life they want to run (aka transfer).

Im a huge hoops junkie and follow most of the current and former bears via social media and I'd be willing to bet the house that Cody Mcdavis had a huge role to play in this thing. He seems to climbing the ladder with the NCAA as some sort of spokesperson for student athletes and if he's garnered anyone's ear then I'm sure he voiced his negative opinion of BJ. Im making alot of assumptions there but I do remember BJ saying Cody decided to leave because "we couldnt make things work" which probably translates to Cody wasnt a Coach Hill fan so he left.

Im frustrated. Im not calling BJ a diamond in the rough but he had what we needed. A hard nosed, hard working guy who cared about his guys. Been the head guy in Greeley for 6 years...1 of those he won a conference championship, another year he had the Bears in first in the Big Sky for half of the year (Unruh and Barden's Sr. year). Thats no Bill Self version of the Big Sky but he could coach!!

It's going to be a tough road as we go through this review of our program, but it's crazy to assume the worse. I wasn't a fan of coach Hill, but I didn't see him as a cheater and allegations are just that...... Let's not convict the program of wrongdoing even before we know the allegations.

Regarding the Izzo article, it shouldn't shock us that kids and coaches transfer all the time. Look at how many assistant coaches have come and gone under Hill leadership. The Tom Izzos of the world really don't count. He has made it, so to speak, both in salary ( 4 million a year ) and programs. I wonder how many coaches have come and gone under his leadership?

College and basketball are supposed to be fun. Every student athlete spends countless hours at practice, lifting weights, studying and traveling all for a chance to play a game they love. When they don't get that chance or they perceive its no longer fun they look for other opportunities. It's becoming the norm in our society and shouldn't surprise us that it happens at UNC. Adversity builds character, we all know that. It's why I keep talking about that "father figure" role coaches have regarding young men. Some of these kids have great support structures at home. Some not so much. Great coaches have it figured out!!! Hill ????

Hoopsfan09, if Cody did have something to do with this, good for him. My guess is the NCAA doesn't consider Level 1 violations against a program without a little smoke and probable fire. Certainly most universities don't fire coaches who have just signed a 5 year contract without cause.

As they say, sunlight is the best disinfectant. We shall see.

Someone who would double down on another year of coach Hill at the helm really doesn't have a clue how he runs his program. I think Dunn is culpable in all this too! What oversight was he providing to the University?

What's tragic about it all is coach Hill let the success of his first season go to his head! He believed all the hype he was told about himself and his team (or more so Boyle's team) as if He created the success that year. Then reality set in the next year and he could never live up to the image he believed he had in his own mind. It is a tragedy and I never like to see someone fail but the reality is any program that lacks integrity from the leader will eventually fail!

I was involved with this program in the last year of the Rasmuson era, and I wanted to chime in with my mixed feelings here. I got to know Coach Hill, and I genuinely like him as a person. Having said that, this is disappointing for me, as I have firsthand memories of the beatings we took back then to allow this program to move forward. Nevertheless, given what little is public knowledge, it seems silly to make a bunch of snap judgements about who is involved or what took place here that led to this. To me, the discussion should shift to who the next leader of this program is, as the young men who are currently a part of it do not have any sort of leadership at this point.

I'll throw out these names:
Jeff Culver: currently the head coach at UCCS. Did work at UNC under Rasmuson, so he's got a connection to the school and the area, and has been at the lower levels (Johnson and Wales I believe prior to UNC) since he left.
Mike Rohn/Jean Prioleau: Both are assistants at CU, and both have been with Coach Boyle since he hired them 6 years ago. They are head coach material, and they've been intrical parts to what Boyle has done in Boulder, and understand the way he runs a program. Good choices I would think given how popular Boyle still is.
Adam Jacobson/Jon Montgomery: These are a little off the wall, as they're both on the staff at Hawaii, and don't have any connections to the area that I know of. They do, however, have some unique insight into the situation that this program now finds itself in, as Hawaii wasn't that far away from a Sweet 16 berth despite the cloud of their own NCAA investigation.

Let's try to look forward and not use the forum to rehash our feelings toward Coach Hill. Our program is in trouble and we need to try to chart a path for the future, not use all of our energy looking back. I'm hoping that one of Tad's asst coaches are looking for an opportunity or we can get a coach from one of the Big Sky's top programs. It's a good time to clean house and bring in talent. We need a coach that knows the region and can bring in talent. I'm tired of seeing talent leave Colorado. I agree, Hill wasn't the answer. Let's go find the coach that can get us moving in the right direction!

I like the idea of landing one of CU's top assistance. I'm sure Boyle will lend his hand and help out the program. Maybe he can encourage Rohn to apply for the job. After looking at his bio on the CU website, I really like what I see. Hard worker, good recruiter, etc.
