Walsh on UI's list
Tim Walsh, veteran coach at Portland State University, confirmed Saturday that he has discussed the football coaching vacancy with University of Idaho officials.

"I'm definitely interested," said Walsh, who has a 90-68 record in 14 seasons at PSU. He took over the program when it was in NCAA Division II and guided the Vikings' transition into the I-AA Big Sky a decade ago. "Right now, I've had a good conversation with Rob (Spear, UI athletic director)."

That discussion took place on the phone. Walsh said he hasn't been invited to Moscow to interview. That figures to change since Idaho's search is expected to extend into early next week.

"I'm hoping he calls," said Walsh, who was the head coach at Sonoma State prior to PSU.

Idaho is considering five candidates _ Blaine Bennett, Robb Akey, Jim Harbaugh, Walsh and possibly Art Valero.

We need an AD first.

Anyone have the scoop on how the search that officially started on the 8th is coming along?

I'd agree with that Pounder that Walsh is at best third on the short list. I guess if they are looking for someone who will go there and stay there, Walsh looks pretty good. Not sure what the reaction of Idaho supporters would be regarding Walsh.

Looks like UM's head coach is going to end up at Stanford. Nice move for him if it pans out that way.

Lof of coaching moves still to come in the BSC.

Anyone read Maves' comments today?

"There's some uncertainty about what happens with the new athletic director," he said. "I really don't want to leave Portland State at all. But I also think my players deserve respect (in the Big Sky Conference), and I don't think we get any respect."

Very interesting comments by Walsh. This could be taken as "If I'm not going to be AD, I'm outta here."

I don't think Walsh wants the AD position nor do I think he would be a good fit for it as well. Walsh is just being smart career postion on things like Ericson did. I don't blame walsh feeling the way he does. The Vacancy for the AD position has been open way to long and from being in the know of trully how long its been and what the administration is thinking it really reflects poorly on our program.

Personally if Walsh goes to Idaho, good for him its a step up. However he really hasn't made his situation trully to much better by what he has to work with. The incentives that I see is a bigger salary, more funding to his program, advancement of his career, and possibilities to play in bowl games! The disadvantages are rebuilding a bad program, recruitment will be hard until UI has a winning season, living under ericson's shoes for the first couple of season's especially if UI continues to have loosing schedules.

Even if Walsh leaves I feels its good for the PSU program. We need somebody to come in who has some energy and drive to take our Football program to that next level and I dont think Walsh is the person to do it. He has been close many times but has struggled to make it happen over the past decade.

My concern is that Terry Mariani stays on with the program long enough to work hard and recruit the coach that is deserving to the PSU football program! If not then I think things will significantly fall between the cracks with PSU athletics looking for both a New AD and Head Football Coach.

again this is all IMPO.

GO VIKS!!!!!!!!!!

"I love Portland State and I love my players, but at this point in my life (Walsh turned 52 on Sunday), it doesn't hurt to look around."

This quote just landed on Boise radio. Between the host noting the fact that Walsh had been at PSU for 14 years and the Statesman sports editor tearing apart the "doesn't hurt to look around" comment, you can tell the kind of laugh they were having, basically questioning Walsh's commitment. Of course, they went on to basically mention how Erickson and predecessor Nick Holt didn't know what they were getting into when they got to Moscow. Mr. Editor (Mike Prater) mentions, of the available candidates, perhaps only Wazzu DC Robb Akey "understands the situation" across the border.

Pit-in-stomach gut feeling, all the way from Boise- Walsh wants the AD job, and wants to keep himself as head coach. Well, whatever can realistically bump up his income will be attempted IMO... which is why he's talking about looking around in the first place. I wonder if PSU would have the stones to cite economic reasons to dump Walsh.

Meanwhile, the ESPN ticker screams that Jim Harbaugh has accepted the Stanford job.

Report tonight out here is that Walsh, Akey, and Blaine Bennett have interviewed in person... and more names are being added to the search. The list seemed to have Harbaugh on top before the Stanford rumor came to fruition. It's getting as ridiculous as usual in Lentil Town.

this is all kinda weird

I'm thinking that Walsh is using this "interest" in Idaho as leverage to get the AD position at PSU. Its gotta be a "either you give me the AD position or I'm outta here!" thing. I wish it wasn't that way, but that's what it looks like to me.

This can't end well.

Either Walsh leaves and we're high and dry without an AD and a head football coach, or he stays as head coach and will be looked at as a guy who wants to leave a place that he feels gets no respect. Should be fun recruiting. I don't think that Walsh will get the AD position.

something has to happen soon, wonder what Marini is doing right now about this, she has to have some plan

So Walsh contacted Idaho? I thought looking around was entertaining invites rather than calling other places about job openings. :-\

Erickson's comments sum him up in a couple of sentences.

Hmmm....not quite sure how I feel about that.

On the AD Front: I heard that there has been a really good turnout of quality applicants who have applied for the AD position. Lets hope the committee can choose a good one that will take PSU to the next level!
