Week 1 Opponent - San Jose State

Next Thursday, FBS matchup, but I like out chances. They have a very good QB but I believe last season they only won one game and they last to UC Davis. Besides UNLV a few seasons ago, I think this is our best bet at an upset. This is the only game all season that is not televised. I think we win this by a 4 points.

A preview of SJSU. Hopefully it works.
They were God awful last year, but we it up either. I do believe though that we have improved more than they have. I think our offense will move the ball much better this year and our defense will be likewise improved.

I think it'll be a brawl between two teams that want to exorcise last year's demons, and I like our chances.

My wife and I still be going to the game, anybody else?

I'm right there with ya Beanhead. I think they're just dangling a carrot in front of him to remind him of what the hard work is for.
Regardless, my wife and I are making a mini vacation out of it. Neither of us have been to the bay area and we're planning on enjoying it.

A win would make it more enjoyable though. 😉

Wish I could make the trip, but have fun! I like our chances at the "upset."
The depth chart was released yesterday on the website. Not really any big surprises, but the ones that stand out the most is our wide receiver group. I believe Jarin Mitchell is going to be a very good receiver this year, along with Sole and Dante Warren. They might surprise some people. The o-line depth seems okay. They won't have to hold their blocks for a 7 step drop back with our new offense, so let us hope the sacks total is reduced big time. Also, does anyone know what happened with Corey Tate? The true freshman that was playing well during Spring ball? He's not on the roster anymore. I think he had a chance to play and maybe even start this year.

Wish you could make it BD. I think it's gonna be a good one.
I'm in agreement with your assessment of the offense. I'm still learning dudes' names, but I'm with you on the receivers. I see this offense moving the ball and putting up points.
Hopefully with fewer sacks Knipp will stay healthy.
I think we all know how huge that would be.

I've got the request in for info on what happened to Tate. I'll let you know if I hear something.

I find it odd that the game is on a Thursday night with no TV. Why would you have it on a Thursday night if it wasn't on TV?

ESPN ranked the Spartans as one of the worst 10 teams in the FBS. I will be pretty disappointed if we don't win tonight.https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/page/bottom082819/the-preseason-bottom-10-ready-do-worst

I was wondering the same thing. I thought at least it would be on ESPN+ or something.

I like this article, 4 reasons why SJ may win and 4 reasons why they may not.

15-28 4th quarter and we go for a FG? C'mon man, let's play to try and win this thing. Just some cowardly calling, if you want an upset you need to roll the dice.

Well, at least Collin Root was good.

Went to bed after the 1st quarter but recorded the game on Tunein Radio and listened to most of it this morning. Honestly, it sounded just like any of the games the previous seasons. Lets just hope that San Jose is better than people think they are. If not, it could be a very long season.

There are no moral victories, and I'm disappointed in this loss. The new offense is not good, and it's over-hyped at least so far. The Spartans defense knew exactly what we were going to do on offense. There were hardly any throws down the middle, it usually short throws to the outside receivers. I'm hoping this is just part of implementing a brand new system.

On defense...it's going to be a long year for our db's...especially when our defensive line (which was supposed to be a strength of the team) can not get pressure on the qb. Our line outweighed their offensive line, yet I don't think they had a sack. Is Jeff Butler getting these guys stronger? NO.

Our defense made their QB look like Joe Montana. Also as long as we cannot run the ball. As seen in the game stats.

Attempts 41
Average Per Attempt 2.7

We are not going to be very good. Also it drives me crazy when your idea of rushing is spreading 4 out and then handing the ball to Milo Hall in shotgun formation. :ohno:

I am not a Nebraska fan, but this is about as awesome as football gets.

Wow, the O-line in that video must have been having a blast. That's got to be a dream to run block all the time. Listening to the game they mentioned we were averaging over 4 yards per rush but that may not have counted Knipp's sacks/rushes. Hall average 3.9 yards per carry which is decent.

We are just always so predictable. Even the radio broadcast team was moaning that we were not throwing the ball down the middle (on crossing routs) and that are CB's were too far off the WR's. Surely the coaching staff should see that as well right?

Yeah Hall, is actually pretty good, like you said we are just a very predictable team. Let's now just focus on making it out of Washington healthy.

If San Jose is in the bottom 10 of the FBS, than this game is troubling but not surprising. I cant believe that the program brought Knipp back. He has had season ending injuries the past 3 years. During Spring camps and practices he has gotten 90 percent of the first team snaps, so when he has gotten injured, we were forced to play back up QBs that were never prepared to play. They come come in cold during the 2nd or third game of the season and have to try and catch up, but never really do. This year with a new OC the team should have selected a Sophomore QB and prepared him to start and used this season to help him gain momentum for coming seasons. Knipp is overrated, with his injuries and lack of durability, no NFL team will take him.

Typically the experts say you don't know what type of team you have until about Week 3. However, the problems that have plagued us for a long time seem to have not been fixed. The offense was horrible, and predictable. Say what you want about coach Boyer, but he was and is a heck of a play caller. Fulton deserves a D- grade in his first game as oc. Troy and Rath were both repeatedly mentioning how the Spartan defense knew exactly what what we were going to do on offense, it was not even close. The other is this...the guys are not getting stronger with Jeff Butler as strength coach and that is evident with our outmatched defensive line against the o-line of the Spartans. We outweighed them and they still pushed us around.

Did anyone see this game in person? If so did it look as bad as it sounded on the radio? It sounded like we have no offense and no defense of the pass. This was against a BCS team and we were expected to lose, but I hope we at least look a little better next game at Washington State and then play competitive in the Big Sky.
