Week 1 Opponent - San Jose State

I was there budbear.
I have refrained from commenting for a while while I drank and calmed down so i could think about the game more objectively.

I saw things i liked, and things i didn't.
We did have a bad tendency to snap the ball to Knipp, he turns, fires to the outside receiver.
Time after time after time after time.
I think there was decent success once.

We did have some pretty decent success when we threw a screen pass.
A screen pass. I mean we threw one screen pass. We had good success with it. The one and only one that I remember.

Our secondary was bad. Not knocking the dudes, but they weren't getting the job done. They did a better job in the second half though.

I would have liked to have seen a run try doing around the edge. It looked like everything was between the tackles.

I think we got a bit of pressure in the QB twice. Both times it screwed with him and we had success.

The kids played hard and played hard to the end.

There is stuff that needs cleaned up, and I'm sure the coaches saw it too. Hopefully they can get it taken care of.
I honestly can't tell you I if we were that bad, they were thar much better, or a combination of the two.
Unfortunately I don't think we'll learn anything more next week. It'll probably be after the Sacramento game before we start getting an honest feel for this team.

Typically the experts say you don't know what type of team you have until about Week 3. However, the problems that have plagued us for a long time seem to have not been fixed. The offense was horrible, and predictable. Say what you want about coach Boyer, but he was and is a heck of a play caller. Fulton deserves a D- grade in his first game as oc. Troy and Rath were both repeatedly mentioning how the Spartan defense knew exactly what what we were going to do on offense, it was not even close. The other is this...the guys are not getting stronger with Jeff Butler as strength coach and that is evident with our outmatched defensive line against the o-line of the Spartans. We outweighed them and they still pushed us around.

I agree with Boyer being a good OC, just not at UNC. Boyer didn’t have any credibility with the players and had a tendency to play favorites. Boyer has a good offensive mind but he had a large number of plays that were complicated and slow developing. It’s difficult for any O line to hold a block for the majority of his plays let alone play after play. He should have had a simpler playbook with quicker plays. He also had a tendency make some idiotic play calls that left not just us but the players shaking their heads. I think Fulton can be successful, but he needs time he is in a completely new league.

That's fair, but I still believe the wrong coach was let go on the offense. Wikre should have been fired two years ago; the same with Butler. The guys are not as strong and physical and they're getting their asses handed to them game after game.
