Week 2: Hornets at Cal
Cal (1-0, 0-0 Pac12) kicked off the season with a 31-24 win at Northwestern. The Bears looked strong for the first half but let off the gas and let Northwestern climb back into it. Cal looks much improved from a season ago, especially on defense.

The Cal offense runs out of the shotgun and typically has 4 WRs on the field. QB (#16) Jared Goff is a more than capable passer who has a good group of talented WRs to target. This will be a huge test for the Hornet secondary. Cal didn’t run the ball well and rotated QBs with (#8) Rubenzer to try and get the ground game going. Rubenzer (led Cal in rushing last week) usually just ran a QB draw or QB sweep when in the game.
The Cal defense played out of the 4-3 and was soft on underneath coverage. They did swarm the short yardage plays very well. I think Safron and the Hornet WRs should be able to connect on their short routes if the Bears’ defense plays a similar style this week. I think the key on offense will be stretching the field with some completions down the field. I don’t expect much from the ground game as the Bear defense did well against the run.
I’m not seeing a win in this one, but I think the Hornets can keep it close for a half. If the Hornets limit their mistakes and force a couple turnovers this game could get interesting.
Go Hornets!!!
