Week 2: Hornets at Cal

Cal (1-0, 0-0 Pac12) kicked off the season with a 31-24 win at Northwestern. The Bears looked strong for the first half but let off the gas and let Northwestern climb back into it. Cal looks much improved from a season ago, especially on defense.

Cal Stats: http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/stats/_/id/25/california-golden-bears

The Cal offense runs out of the shotgun and typically has 4 WRs on the field. QB (#16) Jared Goff is a more than capable passer who has a good group of talented WRs to target. This will be a huge test for the Hornet secondary. Cal didn’t run the ball well and rotated QBs with (#8) Rubenzer to try and get the ground game going. Rubenzer (led Cal in rushing last week) usually just ran a QB draw or QB sweep when in the game.

The Cal defense played out of the 4-3 and was soft on underneath coverage. They did swarm the short yardage plays very well. I think Safron and the Hornet WRs should be able to connect on their short routes if the Bears’ defense plays a similar style this week. I think the key on offense will be stretching the field with some completions down the field. I don’t expect much from the ground game as the Bear defense did well against the run.

I’m not seeing a win in this one, but I think the Hornets can keep it close for a half. If the Hornets limit their mistakes and force a couple turnovers this game could get interesting.

Go Hornets!!!

Does anybody know what the payout is for the Cal game?

I understand that the dugpilers made "only" $350,000 for the Stanford Game. Seems like we made about $500,00 when we played them a few years ago. I think the FBS/FCS payoffs are going down. Oregon State and Colorado paid about $475,000, I heard Arizona State only paid $425,000 last year. I expect Cal will pay about $350,000.

hopefully Cal will provide a nice pay out as the mothership of the UC system and lots of our tax dollars going to Cal and all the UCs. And being part of the big 5 FBS conferences with their own TV network the money is flowing in Berkeley. Glad Cal and all the Pac 12 schools accept USC and UCLA still offering FCS gootball schools an opportunity to play in football. Think in Oregon and Arizona that there is some sort of state law that was passed requiring Northern Arizona and Portland State to play an in state Pac 12 football opponent each year.

Just excited to get a chance for the Hornets to once again go to Berkeley and do their best. Nice to see Standford and Cal playing UC Davis and Sac State. Good that tax dollars are staying in this state for the Pac 12 schools being supportive of the FCS schools in CA. instead of giving the pay outs to Big Sky Schools outside CA.

Won't changes to the FBS playoffs change things? If toughness of schedule is a consideration for the the FBS playoffs, then playing and paying a FCS school is a lose, lose. Maybe this question is good for another thread or Condoleezza Rice.

I'm against playing these FBS teams where there is very little chance of winning. Why not take a little less money and play UNLV, Idaho or New Mexico State? The Aggies are screwed this year with Stanford and Colorado State in an 11 game schedule.

Been homebound since surgery a couple weeks ago, will not be able to get to a game until late October soo I was looking forward to watching the game on the Pac 12 Network. Pulled the channel up on Dish to make sure I recorded it and it shows Fresneck vs Utah. WTH?

Wellllll, the game will be televise on the Pac 12 network, at 1 am Monday morning. The game in 60 will be Tues at 4:30 pm so there will be some prime time play for us, but not like a live Saturday game.

Looks like I will be listening on Iheart....

You need the P12 Bay Area Channel to catch it live...which looks like is only carried by local cable providers...

He folks, here's a channel breakdown from the network. If you'll be attending hope you guys enjoy your visit!

In week 2, Pac-12 Networks will televise Fresno State at Utah, Eastern Washington at Washington and Sacramento State at Cal games at 12:00 p.m. PT. The Utah game will be carried on Pac-12 Mountain, Pac-12 Arizona and Pac-12 Network (national feed). The Washington game will be available on Pac-12 Washington and Pac-12 Oregon, while Cal-Sacramento State will be available on Pac-12 Bay Area and Pac-12 Los Angeles.
DISH will offer the UW-Eastern Washington game on channel 406.3 for Hoppers and 593 for non-Hoppers, while AT&T U-verse will have the UW game on channels 763 (SD) and 1763 (HD). For Cal-Sacramento State, DISH will offer the game on 406-02 on the Hopper and 592 for non-Hoppers. AT&T U-verse already makes Pac-12 Bay Area and Pac-12 Los Angeles available to all of their subscribers so they do not need an additional channel for the Cal game.
In addition, Comcast will make the Fresno State-Utah game available to all of their subscribers throughout Northern California on the Comcast Hometown Network, which is channel 102 in most areas. All three games will also be available to all fans that authenticate via their video provider through the Pac-12 Now app or Pac-12.com.

Conventional wisdom would be that the "BCS" school might overlook a game like this. But when that BCS school is coming off 1-11 and an embarrassingly close home game against Portland State last year, you can throw that wisdom out the window. I can't imagine anyone on this squad thinks they're too cool for this game, to be honest. Execution and health are probably the biggest concerns. Realistically, if Dykes wants full fan support for this year, he can't have a "bad win", never mind a loss.

We had a nice infographic this week on your squad which showed me that you have a lot of returning guys, but I don't really know what to make of your win last week seeing as I'd never heard of your opponent. And that it sounds like a house of worship. Sort of like when we played something called "Presbyterian" as a makeup game when we relocated to AT&T Park a couple years ago.

Unfortunately, I won't be there. Late summer weddings are killer. But I hope our fans treat you well. They should have no reason not to. I'm personally not the biggest fan of FCS games, but since we do have them, I would much rather we keep them in the CA public school family. Your travel costs should be minimal, so you should see a nice cut of the check. That makes me happy.

One suggestion, If you are going, don't bother trying to park on/near campus. Our VERY few parking spots are reserved for season ticket holders and donors.

Our last opponent just transitioned to D1…so basically they are a D2 level opponent. Can you provide a link to the infographic?

Agree with you about the in-state games. Some states have a law that require the public in-state FBS program to give public in-state FCS programs the right of first refusal for these money games…I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised the CA legislature isn’t smart enough to figure that out yet.

Yeah figured parking will suck, which is why the booster bus from campus to the game is a very appealing option.

Came across this article today. "Know Your Enemy: Previewing the Sacramento State Offense"

Holy Cow what a breakdown....SD I am going to ask that you step up your weekly breakdown from this point on....I want game film for each opponent...lol

Go Hornets!!!

Welcome sacagent. Excellent breakdown...and no, I do not have the time (or editing skills) to create something to that level of awesomeness.

Edit:
Sac Bee article on Cal game: http://www.sacbee.com/2014/09/04/6680540/sac-state-seeks-another-pac-12.html

Sac State is getting $435,000 for playing Cal and is scheduled to play at Washington next season for $450,000.

Given the difference in travel costs between the Bay Area and going to Seattle, plus the limited access to fans/students, the UW payout seems fairly small.

That’s kind of the norm. There also might be travel considerations but I don’t know, I heard there were for the Oregon State game a few years ago. The same article said davis only got $350k from Stanford so I guess we really made out with the $435k from Cal. I think SJSU paid us around that $350k mark last year.

The scheduling needs of the FBS school might determine the payout. We made about $500,000 to play Stanford after SJSU backed out and took a huge payout to play at Alabama. All the Pac 12 games that I've heard of pay in the $400,000s. Mountain West $300,000s, in the days of the old WAC $200,000s. I don't know why the Dung Pile made only $350,000 at Stanford. Maybe they were given extra blocks of tickets to sell?
