Week 3: Sac State vs. Southern Oregon

First I just want a win! If Safron does not click early we need to get the other QB's in quick to see if they can jump start this thing. I know that Sperbeck's name in on the bottom line, but I'm starting to think Petersen was a bad choice for OC. Early last season the offense was inconsistent as you would expect from a new OC/ system, toward the end it was much better. This year there seems to be poor play-calling and no coordination in getting the plays into the game, that is the OC's responsibility. If things don't work out in this game it might be time for Sperbeck to step in and find a new OC for next season.

Good points but I disagree on Peterson. One only needs to recall the impotent offenses we had without an OC. No reason to think Sperbeck will go out and hire a capable OC if a change is made; just look at the ST coach situation.

I agree with SD. I don't think Peterson is the problem. We had major, MAJOR issues when Sperbeck was doing double duty. I like the look and strategy of our offense, we're just not executing for a variety of reasons (skill level of competition, bad game management, poor decision making, etc.).

The offense is on Peterson. He came in with all the press clippings and high hopes, he needs to produce.
We've been in the red zone 5? times this season without a point. I remember 7 or 8 times in two games where we either ran out of play clock or had to take a last second time out. I understand he is calling the
plays in the press box and relaying them through Ingram. Maybe he needs to be on the sideline to see if that works better. His play calls are also bland and predictable. I really hope that I'm wrong but maybe he was a good QB coach who couldn't make the jump to OC. I will hope for the best but this team has way too much talent to be scoreless after two games.

Peterson was OC at SUU, he has OC experience and was a no-brainer hire. I think the issue is personnel, specifically Safron and this is exactly why Vercher needs some game time reps if Safron continues to falter. I agree to a certain extent on the time taken to get the play in, but how many times has the ball not been snapped due to all the song and dance at the line (audible?)? Can that be put on Peterson as well? Get a QB that can stretch the field with his arm (and throw an accurate ball) and read a basic defense and I think the rest will work itself out.

SD, he was passing game coordinator/ QB-WR coach at SUU not OC.
Let's hope you're right, I expect to walk out of the stadium tomorrow night with a win and my apprehensions eased!

I also would agree with SD. To me, the playing calling has Sperbeck written all over it. Basic stuff with no misdirection or creativity. I don't think an OC would go from what he did last year, that in my opinion was a huge improvement over Sperbeck's play calling, and revert to what was going on and did not work all that well prior to his tenure here.

We also have to keep in mind that one of the minor goals of games 1 through 3 is to be successful without putting too much of our gameplan on film. There's no way we pull out all the stops against and FBS/NAIA schools. I'd like to think we held back a little bit, especially once the games were out of reach...

Well since all SUU did was pass when Peterson was there, doesn’t that make him the defacto OC? ;)

We need to see some life from the offense tomorrow. It's an absolute must win situation imo.

For me, if we're having issues with getting plays called, I put that on the quarterback. Yes, in this era the OC (or the HC in certain situations like go-for-it 4th downs) likes to retain control. But if he's dilly-dallying, the quarterback has GOT to have the balls to just say, "Screw this. THIS is the play," and go with it. If he was paying attention to the OC's philosophy during Spring Ball and Fall Camp and studied the week's game plan, he shouldn't go far wrong.

Better that than give up five or a fumbled snap 'cause you tried to rush it....

I don't think anyone of us expected to beat ASU or SJS. We earned around $700 k and had no major injuries; that’s was I was looking for. Now we can start to build on getting people to attend home games. We have 4 home games all against lower tiers teams in our conference in the next 5 weeks, and we should win. Yes, I said win; and when we win, more people show up for the next home game. I am always talking to friends about attending the games with me, and sometimes they do, and when we win they will come back, but when we lose, they stay home. We need to win at home and fill our 21,195 stadium, just like Montana does.

Nicely said. I think anything less than a convincing win is unacceptable tomorrow (well tonight now). I know Southern Oregon is considered a formidable squad at its own level, but we are in a top echelon FCS conference, and have been searching for the next-step for years now. I think Sperbeck has done a fine job, but I'm starting to expect results. I like that Sperbeck has handed the offensive responsibilities to Peterson, but the offense needs to show promise. I didn't expect much from the SJSU and Az State games as both are major contenders of their respective FBS conferences, but we didn't show any real offensive potential. The Big Sky is tough this year, and we will have to be on our game to compete. The athletic department has made strides in upping our exposure and attempting to increase interest, but if we can't rack up wins, the stands will remain empty. There's only so much dissapointment our fan base can take.

Perhaps I got too negative here, but all I'm saying is its time to expect some success. Whether its Safron or another player, the Hornets need to find some rhythm. Maybe we're doing good for our level and program history, but it feels like perpetual rebuilding at times. Maybe we were just up against competition that was really that good, but if we want to talk playoffs someday, its time to up the game.

And if the QB is having these kind of "problems" who coaches the OB's and chooses which play that will give us the best chance for success?

No, unfortunately, I'm watching this bull S.

Must be on my end. My laptop is on its last legs. Keeping up with the ESPN Gamecast. I guess I should be thankful I can't see it. I'm irritated just reading about it.
