Week 3: Sac State vs. Southern Oregon

Embarrassing game, but fortunately we avoided the embarrassing loss. That was the only good news of the night. My thoughts:

We are stuck with Safron for the entire season so the coaches burned Vercher's RS for no reason whatsoever. Safron had a good game and only faltered when his receivers let him down (Harrison dropped too EEEAAAASSSSYYYY catches that would have set up 1st and goal on two separate occasions, Norrise fell down which resulted in the lone Hornet INT of the night). Graham is a stud but we knew that already. Injuries are eating us up and we are only 1/4 into the season. Graham got dinged, Worthley went out and it looked serious. No sign of Coleman so he is clearly hurt. Warren fumbled on the first play from scrimmage which I think SOU fed off of and catapulted them to a stellar performance.

The defense is garbage plain and simple. Zero discipline, zero adjustments, just horrible all around. They were schooled by a lesser team (yes, a NAIA program is lesser no matter how many yards/points they put up). The worst part was the discipline. The Hornets would get a stop, only to prolong a drive with a STUPID penalty. 3rd and forever: personal foul face mask. 3rd and short: offsides, DL too stupid to watch the ball and not listen to the QB. 2nd and long: stupid personal foul for shoving a player after an in-completion. Just stupid thug bull sh!t that did nothing but benefit the other team.

Special teams was fine. We know Aguilar can hit PATs and the blocking can hold up. The lone miss was a 49 yarder that had a low snap but Vercher got it down. SOU didn't break off any returns and Graham and Carter had some good KR. One long punt was returned due to a penalty. Weldon and the punt coverage had a stellar night.

Bottom line is we won't win many games this season with this garbage play. I'm inclined to write off the season unless this is somehow some kind of a wake up call (as if getting outscored 69-0 in weeks 1 & 2 wasn't one already). Very disappointing play, very close to just needing to hit the reset button and clean house. A very hollow victory tonight. :ohno:

What makes me even more sick is we actually have good quality players that given our talent, we should have held these guys to under 20 pts. I clearly see a problem with us defending against a quick release QB. From the games I have watched like PSU/Cal, WSU/Utah, etc. are conference has gone to more of a quick release passing quick slants, etc. What is reprehensible is our coaching staff did NOTHING to adjust all game long. Do not even get me started on special teams, we almost missed that PAT at the end of regulation. The thing that disturbs me is these guys think they are way better than they are.

Offense rating: :o
Defense rating:
Special teams: :thefan: :thefan:

:isht: feeling this is what our season will be like.
I missed the last bit of scoring (gotta be at the airport super early) but I thought the ST was the lone bright spot of the evening. Totally agree with you on the defensive adjustments...or lack thereof.

Also, I believe Worthley and Sander will be done for the year...
What happened to Sander? I must have missed that.

Guessing bad shoulder injury. Had a defender jump on his back on the second drive and he crunched into the ground.

Ok I did see him come off. But now that I think of it he did not re-enter the game. The loss of Worthley will be the big loss. Backups looked fine against the undersized SOU front, but the DL the Hornets will face in BSC play will be much better.

Have you ever watched a QB throw for 7 TDs in a game and still have absolutely no confidence in him? That's me with Safron. The guy can make two throws, a slant and a deep fade, and thats about it.

The defense seems to have regressed to the Volek-era, making some of the dumbest mistakes I've ever seen a football team make. PFs, jumping offsides, facemasks. There was one drive where they stopped SOU twice on third down only to commit a penalty and extend the drive, which resulted in a deep TD. There is a real lack of a pass rush which is exposing our secondary. Josh Armstrong had one of the worst games I've ever seen a corner play, and the only thing worse was his attitude.

This team may win three games this year. Just don't see it. I'm optimistic about Sanders and Worthley. Don't think the injuries are season-ending by watching them move on the sidelines.

SOU is dangerous. Their QB Austin Dodge is a stud pocket passer. Regardless of the competition, he threw for 5000+ yards and 42 TDs last season (AS A SOPH!) and has good size at 6'2 200lbs. You will likely see him in an NFL camp as an UDFA after the 2014 season. Our secondary will be tested, for sure.

We failed!

I agree

As I said after the ASU game this team is in trouble no doubt about it.
The weird thing is that there wasnt that much turnover from last year, so what happened?
This team looks nothing like last years hornets.

Btw, Josh Armstrong isn't a good corner. He had similar issue in the San Jose State game...

Coaching or lack thereof happened. A telltale sign happened during the ASU game, when we were down 48-0 and ASU called a timeout. ASU coach had his guys on the sidleine coaching up the team. Sperbeck? Oh yea, the camera caught him standing by the water cool getting a drink and NONE of the coaches had the guys huddled up.

Our coaches have a "union Mentality". I worked a job when I was younger where a union existed. Someone left, and do you think the best person for the job got the position? Nope union rules the guy with seniority got the job.Too many positions on this team qualify here.....

I think 3-4 wins is about right AND Sperbeck gets a 7 year extension.

The Hornets played a scary, sloppy and uninspired game last night , I'm just glad we won. We nearly penalized ourselves to death. Many of those penalties were blatant, stupid, totally unnecessary which kept drives going and SOU in the game. I was glad to see some life back in the offense although it was hard to evaluate considering they were matched with a NAIA defense that had given up 30+ points in their two previous games. Graham had a huge game and Safron looked good most of the time. Safron was back to using his feet more last night, I think that was the difference. Safron doesn't have the greatest arm, but he does have the ability to cause defenses problems by his ability to run. On the interception he thew at the goal line from about the 25 he had a least 15 yards to run untouched if he choose. If the defense gives you something, why not take it? I also noticed that whenever we switched to a hurry up offense SOU could not adjust and those series ended up with tds. If something is working why not take advantage of it until it stops working? The defense was inconsistent all night they made some plays, but often negated their efforts with stupid penalties. At other times it looked like they were sleep walking. At San Jose the defense looked intense and focused, last night it was totally different. We need to give credit to SOU they came to win and played a great game, they outplayed and out hustled us most of the night. Their QB Austin Dodge is the real deal, in a lot of ways he looked better than Fales at San Jose. I would hate to see what he could do with better protection. He also took some major hits and just kept coming back and playing well, tough kid. I am not giving up on the Hornets this season, there is a lot football to be played and potential for a lot of improvement. I'm not sure how good this team can be, the talent's there but there is a different feel to it than last year's team. Although we have a lot of returning players we lost a lot of solid players like Ryan McMahon from last year. I heard we have 33 new players this year, it may take some time for them to find their roles and for chemistry to develop. The coaches have big job in front of them to clean up the problems, and to get this team moving and improving. That's why they make the big bucks as D1 coaches!

I give the Hornets credit, they came back and won when they could just as easily called it a night.

I tuned out after SOU took the lead with 1:34 left in the game. Pleasantly surprised to wake-up and read that the Hornets pulled it out to win.

Dodge is a hella QB, and that RB took the Hornets to school.

Attendance was 7,543 btw.
Not as bad as I thought it would be, but not as good as it needs to be. Kind of OK considering the Hornets came into the game scoreless and winless. SOU had a great turnout (quite a few players from the area on the SOU roster) and the student section was mostly full. Not too great of a turnout in the paying sections. Maybe the high score posted in this one will bring out a few more folks this week.

At least we outdrew the 4,900 that turned out for the dugpilers / Northern Arizona game! So much for the exciting home opener of the "Gould Era"! Seems like their main concern is that only two food trucks showed up on "food truck night" and that NAU rented our equipment truck which was looming over the stadium!

Guess everyone in the valley were glued to the Notre Dame-Purdue game
Can't really throw stones at this point, but it is nice to get a little laugh at our misguided neighbors to the west :D

The funny thing is we had 3 food trucks out at the tailgate. They probably didn't want to make the drive over to the dungpile.
