Week 8 - Sac State vs Weber State

The Massey predictions have us finishing 4-1, 7-5 overall with a loss to MSU.

I don’t have confidence in this particular team to be consistent enough to make a run like this, but as I’ve said in other threads, this is pretty much what has to happen if we want to have a SHOT at the playoffs. We unfortunately need UC Davis to come into the Causeway with a 10-1 record and top 5 ranking so a win bolsters the resume…

Will never apologize for winning, but sheesh.

This is not the right time or place for an OC to learn on the job. If Sac goes to FBS, the staff can not go with us.
I touched on this topic the other day.

Since AT became HC his defense hasn’t been as good either. Giving up lots of pts.

I had thought Bobby F w his years apprenticed w Troy Taylor that he would have been prepared. He wasn’t paying attention I guess? Maybe he didn’t understand how TT decided his playbook and play calling?

Clearly without a doubt. Bobby F. We appreciate your love for Hornet football. But you are NOT helping us at D1 level. You aren’t consistent enough. And under pressure. You FADE and make bad choices,

Too little too late. You started off solid then Q4 choked. Not Acceptable. Demote to QB coach or resign sir.

HC Thompson. Your defenses haven’t been as good as the previous seasons WHY? Are you too thin with time for D being HC? You need to decide if you need to hire DC or you need to go back 100% to DC and we hire new HC?

He called a great first half.

Second half, not so much. Especially Q4 when he made that indefensible trick play call then goes 3 and out the next two possessions after it.

OT he was better. But it shouldn’t have ever gotten to that point in the first place.
BF was rolling first 3 QTRS. Once his trick play blew up.
He got panicked and then his play calling Q4 was weak with several stalled drives.
To grow into FBS we need consistency and game to game improvements. His play calling did improve but then he hit panic mode and couldn’t get the offense moving Q4. Almost gave the game away!

Relax HFF, also you're wrong about the play calling last night. Yes the gadget play was a disaster, but the play calling stuck to the same strategy even after the game tightened up in the 4th quarter. ETT was still fed (and attempted to be fed) the ball. Conklin just missed on some reads, there were receivers open that would have kept the sticks moving. That was different from EWU in which the Hornets just started slinging the ball down the field in hopes of connecting on some big plays. Noticeable improvement in play calling strategy between the 2 games and putting Conklin in a position to be successful.

I went back and re-watched that goal line stand at the end of regulation. Leota, Jackson, and Knott came through huge in stopping the run plays and forcing a field goal in that sequence. They came through again in the 2nd over time. Gutsy performance in the clutch on that side of the ball.

We should see some wins and at least get to 500 on the year, but we're a longshot to make the playoffs. I think that ship has sailed.

I'm sorry. I missed the game. (Not televised and manning a booth to advertise my scout group at our local Pioneer Days celebration here in Twentynine Palms.) I'm hearing about a trick play, but not much in the way of details other than an RB option pass. While the area of the field under discussion is decidedly NOT where I would call such a play (and the point differential described would rule it out altogether for me), was this supposed to be a throwback to the quarterback? That worked out great for my favorite professional quarterback many times, but I highly doubt he or his coaching staff would have called it in the area or in the situation all y'all have described.

EDIT: I just saw an article. A throwback to the quarterback was EXACTLY what was going on. And I wholeheartedly agree that it was a totally wrong call for the situation. You call that between roughly the minus 40 to the plus 15 during the middle of the game, NOT inside the ten with a three-possession lead in the fourth quarter. SMH....

The game was televised. Just like the rest of our games and is available on demand. Not only that but video of the play was on THIS FUCKING THREAD.

GO AWAY. NO ONE WANTS YOU HERE YOU DUMB FUCK

Yes.. great stands a few times. Overall we gave up a lot of points. Defenses win championships.

So do offensive-driven teams.

As long as a team is good enough on both sides of the ball, and on special teams, it doesn't matter which side is the more prolific or dominant.

People love to repeat that overused axiom even though it isn't quite true.

You can cite as many great offensive teams that were just good enough on defense as you can cite great defensive teams that were just good enough on offense.

I'd be thrilled to have a dominant shutdown defense, but that is rare in the BSC, and will be even more so with NIL picking away star players.

Interestingly of note, the Hornet defense is atop the BSC in sacks, 2nd in interceptions, 1st in forced fumbles, 1st in fumbles recovered and are currently the best red zone defense (by percentage). The Hornet defense has also given up the 3rd fewest 1st downs. Keep in mind that this is with 2 FBS games on the schedule. The defense is giving up too many 3rd down conversion and big plays, but this is a talented unit that just needs to continue finding stops in critical situations.

For the time being, all the Andy Thompson haters should take a seat.

A dominant win would've gotten us more votes, but nonetheless we move up to #29 in the Country.

Wins against Idaho State and Portland State (which won't be easy) over the next two weeks would have us with a winning record (5-4) and probably ranked headed to Bozeman for a Top 25 matchup with the Cats.

MSU, Montucky seem to have figured out to have annually consistent low scored upon defenses. Same with FUCD and overall program success on both D & O.

Andy Thompson needs to be a full time HC or full time DC, not both.

Fresques/Thompson just about choked the game after the errant pick 6 and subsequent 17pt Weber onslaught to crawl back into the game. This team has to learn to put the game away. Bankston and 234yds was running at free will against the Hornets.

Hornets didnt win the game, they just didn't lose it. It was a failure of the Weeb kicker, which was a miraculous event in itself as he is their all time scorer.

MSU controls the ball and tempo with their run heavy power rushing offense, and have been for a number of years now. Their defense is pretty solid but when you have an offense that can dominate TOP like they do, they have plenty of room for error on the other side of the ball.

Montucky's defense is horrible this season, largely due to graduation from a stellar defense a year ago. They have given up 35 (WCU), 49 (EWU), and 55 (WSU) points in their last 3 games. Yeah, they really have it figured out.

The phags defense is nowhere near as good as last season but it's certainly respectable. When you have a high powered offense loaded with senior talent, you can score boat loads of points (think our '22 season) and make the job on the other side of the ball easier.

Not buying the "we didn't lose" the Weber game comment. This team could have rolled over in OT, it didn't. And the missed Weber kick would have only tied it. We couldn't find a way to win 2 weeks ago, this past week in similar circumstances this team found a way.

Our issue has been on the offensive side of the ball, primarily because our starting quarterback got hurt/bailed on this team. The offense (players and coaches) had to adjust to a redshirt freshman with 6 career starts and 11 appearances under his belt who is currently slinging the ball with a 4:1 TD to INT ratio. We're coming off our best offensive game of the season that featured over 350 passing yards for the first time since week 3 of 2021 and you MFers are dooming? Get a grip.

JUST WIN!!!

My favorite! I’m NOT a Raider fan since I believe they coined that term

I’m a fan of Carson Conklin. He’s developing well.
It’s the OC’s job to select good playbook then from sky box scout the D scheme and send QB his play call.
I feel we can win games if our OC has his act together. We have enough talent to play w anybody in the BigSky to be competitive.
The OC did a nice 3/4 game last week. When he can deliver 4 qtrs of drives (even if not scoring but controlling TOP, field position that would be fine to preserve a lead etc.
I hope he calls Awesome games rest of season and proves me wrong. Genuinely mean that.
But I do think we need a better OC.
