Welcome Back Earnest!!!!!!!

mrlippy, I contend you're misguided on the two points still. I don't think a top priority is to have a football secretary, hell there are no secretaries in the entire department - why: they can't afford one. Secondly, it's not that they "don't want to pay fair market value" it's that right now they can't. Unless you drop sports that aren't required by the Big Sky. If they'd drop Baseball and Wrestling for instance they could probably pay everyone more and have the budget for more support staff - including the all important football secretary. Bottom line, if football and men's basketball enjoy success, there will be more revenue and that will lead to better staffing levels and better pay.

Look at the department staffing of our BSC brothers and tell me any school that has as few Assistant AD's and Associate AD's as we do. Hell we have one Associate AD and two Assistant ADs. I'm guessing that Idaho State is the next poorest school in the conference and they have 6 Assistant ADs.

You have to crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run as a DI athletic department and right now I'd say we're just starting to walk.

I don't think we're as bad a shape as Idaho State. They hired Mike Kramer who I think will be good for them, but almost all of his assistant coaches are grad assistants. They can't afford any experienced coaches. That's something I hope we can avoid and give Collins better resources. Who is going to the meet and greet today with coach Collins? If so, let us know how it goes.

Just reading the article about the press conference makes me what September to be here now. Collins has such a great passion for the program. I can't wait to see what he can do! Scott - is there any way to get a video up on the official athletic website of the press conference? I was hoping to get to the reception but weather held me back.

Yeah it's funny, more passion in that one press conference than the prior regime showed in 5 years.

That article does get you fired up... we won't win right away but the days of sleep walking through games and making excuses for choking are over!

i've contended that who ever got the job would benefit greatly from Downing's recruiting. I really think that we have a lot of talent that just needs to be directed in the right way and inspired on game day. We're not where we were 5 years ago. The table is set!

Boy, when coach Collins said,"I am sick of hearing about Montana", I got fired up! And the picture of him in the refs face. When was the last time we have seen that kind of passion from our coaching staff. That is the kind of excitement and passion that has been sorely missing around here!! Go Bears!

When I first heard about Earnest being hired I didn't think it was a bad hire but wasn't real excited about it either. Then I read the articles about his reception and it gave me chills like I used to get watching him play! I am so psyched to hear a coach with some passion in contrast to Downing or how Dave Logan would have been with their vanilla statements showing they could give a rat's ass about this school. I can picture Dave Logan's reception statements, if he would have taken the job, going something like this: "Well I think we can probably do a heck of a job here at Northern Colorado University, I think we can be real competitive here at the Division II level"

As much as I love UNC, I can't believe that the head coaching job here would be anybody's dream job. The best I hoped for would be a guy like Tad who didn't care about the program but did care about winning. With Earnest, I think we got the best of both worlds.

I keep hearing speculation but does anybody know how much of a pay cut Earnest had to take to come here? I'm hoping they found a way to come up with a decent amount over what Downing was getting.

What's going on Bear fans? We should have 5 pages on this thread. No one here is excited about Collins? I know a few of you have chimed in, but what about some of the older posters? Where's Ursa Major?

By the way, has Collins met with the players yet? I know they have been on Christmas break, were the allowed to meet with coaches?

I went to the press conference and I'm fairly well impressed. He really wanted the job, and I have a feeling his passion is going to drive this team.

My son says they meet with him on the 12th of January, next Wednesday. If I learn more at that time, I'll fill you in.

... if we want to be good, we have to pay good. or, we get what we have had..........

Or, if we don't pay the going rate, expect good coaches to touch down here long enough to add it to their resume, and then catch the next bigger, better ride out of town. We've had some good ones pass through but stay briefly.

I think Bedell is going to be one we wished had stayed longer.

Did he get fired or did he resign?

Thanks Beardown. Seems like a young hungry eager coach! Getting back to recruiting, it seems like we got about a 30 day window to snag some decent recruits.I hope they can turn some miracles!

Not a lot of info out there about the guy.

A 1998 graduate of the University of Iowa, Zach was a member of Hawkeye teams that made appearances in the Sun Bowl in 1995 and 1997 and Alamo Bowl in 1996.

Coached at Western Illinois, St. Joseph’s College Defensive coordinator, Galesburg High School head coach, Central Michigan secondary and Alcorn State defensive coordinator.

Good to hear. I think the players are going to like playing for Earnest. He won't take losing. He loves UNC too much to see the program slid.

Just a point of interest...
My son just told me this AM (Saturday, 8Jan) that he's already met with D.C. Zach Shaw...so he must be in town. Interesting that he's already here, too. Recruiting, I suspect...
