I know the season is barely started but if you were at the game today you noticed how flat the team came out. I pin that on the coaches. I have believed in Downing and after the San Diego game it looked like we finally have turned the corner, but I think the team has lost total faith in the coaching staff. Should Downing go? If so, who's going to coach us? Joe Glenn was at the game today. However, the guy is getting old and Breske, English and the others are still coaching at other schools. If we hire a new coach we have to start over recruiting. Should Hinrichs go? I have mixed fillings about him. I like how he helped with the facility upgrades and he hired some coaches like Tad Boyle.

So Bears fans...what's next??????????????

Someone finally realizes our offensive coordinator is older than the game of football itself?

Paging Joe Glenn.

I get to see two or three games a season on tv here in Maryland and always stick with it, especially the home games where they show a lot of campus shots. This one went off at half time. It was too sad to watch.

He should go, the entire program has a defeatist, dark cloud over it.... and people will say, oh, he's recruited good... OK show me the results, he's a nice guy.. granted, I'd buy a used car from him... but where are the results? Bottom line, he's a loser and we need a red ass in here, someone that actually gets pissed when the team comes out flat and shits the bed week after week.

And people that say the coach can only do so much I present to you Washington, 0-12 last year and this year they beat USC in he third week and they are now ranked #24. So yeah, coaching matters.

Anyone would be better... go get the best coach in the RMAC, North Sun, MIAA, Lone Star.. anywhere, get a guy who has won before as a head coach, not some special teams guy from a Big XII school, it's easy to coordinate recruiting at some big program when it's not your ass on the line, give me a winner at a small school that knows what it takes to overcome some disadvantages and I think thats our answer.

OK, so am I wrong? If so, explain why because I'm sick of being humiliated to be a UNC alum.

The Trib says we were without SEVEN starters for the game. That's tough to over come and I don't expect us to win with that many guys out. However, I still put it on the coaches for not preparing the kids. It's obvious we can't give the QB's that much time, so why put Waggener in there for that long? He's a pro-style qb that needs 5 seconds to throw. I would have put Orms in there. He's much quicker on his feet. The pocket collapses and Orms can run...Waggener not so much.

Yesterday was tough to watch, it was almost sad. I agree when UNC beat San Diego I thought they were finally going to turn the corner. But after seeing yesterdays performance, I think we were better last year. I know there has been some injuries, but this was the year we had the most depth, and there shouldn't be any excuse to why we almost got shut out 2 weeks in a row. Dixie State was able to put 20 points up on MSU, and we could only muster up 7 with under 2 minute to go? That right there shows something is wrong, and a change is needed to be made. Play calling is joke, 3 and 17, and you run that wide receiver swipe/reverse? How many times did we throw down field? I realize the O-Line has struggled but still. Thats probably one of the reasons why teams can get massive pressure on the QB all the time, they know we what we run all the time, couple sweeps, runs up the middle and couple of dump offs. That might be a reason why these kids come out flat they get tired of the play calling too. You'd think the staff would realize that this offensive scheme doesn't work.

I think Downing and the staff are done for after this year. Unless there's a miraculous change to the season, starting next week. I don't care who we get, just some body that has coached at the FBS or FCS level, not a tight end coach or special teams coach or whatever Downing was. Some one that knows the type of athlete needed to compete at this level. This program is in a world of hurt right now. UNC goes to NAU next saturday, NAU took Montana to OT, this one could get ugly as well. I'm going to make my prediction already, 42-0 NAU.

The only positive thing, is that UNC might be able to scrap out MAYBE 2 more wins. One against Idaho State, and the other against South Dakota. That and the season is still young.

Didn't South Dakota lay the lumber to someone yesterday??? Yes, I just looked it up, the beat SE Louisiana 44-13 so I'm guessing they come in here and clean house... hopefully that will lead to Downing resigning in shame. Maybe we beat Idaho State but that's about our only shot at this point.

Yeah injuries, hmmm, every team has injuries, it doesn't account for all the penalties which is not being prepared mentally to play the game.

I don't know if a "red ass" is what we need. Yes some passion would be great. But look at Hawkins at CU. He's full of piss and vinegar and he's about to be fired too. College football is about 89% recruiting. Downing has brought some nice talent in but not enough to compete in the Big Sky.

I say bring back Joe Glenn. If that's not the case than how about Brian Cabral over at CU? He was passed over for for the job last time.

As a former player, I was embarrassed by the lack of effort of the Bears. When leaving Nottingham by Butler-Hancock, I saw the Bears returning to the locker room after the debacle. By the way a lot of them were smiling and laughing, you would have thought they had won the game. The least you can do after an ass-kicking is to be pissed off about it.

I thought giving Downing the extension last year was a major mistake and it looks like I may be right. Everyone knows where I come out on the Downing debate so I won't even go there. It is not a question of if he should be fired but when. Of course since Hinrichs just gave him the extension so he has to let him go until at least the last game or two would be my guess.

That loss hurt in a lot of ways. First you get spanked at home in front of your fans and supporters. Second you had a ton of recruits in that watched you get destroyed and know of your recent history, no one wants to come to a program like that. Third any recruit or fan who was not watching saw the game on TV and just compounded the problem.

As for small steps Downing should do now.
1. The first thing he needs to do is fire his offensive coordinator. Sure its just ceremonial but it at least sends the message that you care and are not going to put up with this garbage.
2. He needs to run a lot of the wildcat offense. The wildcat is a very simple offense that has one advantage, you get an extra blocker into the run game. Since the o-line is garbage you need to realize that and give them some help.
3. Mobility is key with the o-line so get Orms in there more. He doesn't have to play the whole time, but get him a package of 15 plays he can run - options, wildcat, rollouts, etc. At least change the look for the defense. Or you could just keep calling the same 6 plays for Wagner and have under 100 yards of offense again.
4. Turnovers. Going to have to take more chances with the defense to get some turnovers. I understand being conservative and trying to keep everything in front but the d-line isn't generating any type of rush. The only chance this offense has to score is by getting a very short field to work with. We will probably get burned for a few long td's, but I just don't see any other option.
5. Resign :D

Watched the game on Altitude, made me sick and ruined my Saturday.

Reminded me of the lack of effort against Chadron State a couple years back.

Paging Bill O'Boyle and company! Paging Bill O'Boyle and company!

This guy O'Boyle is going 2W -3L so far and the only wins were from low caliber teams. He had success when he had some good talent and that goes likewise for everybody's favorite Joe the "I want to move on" Glenn. These guys are only as good as their talent. Glenn found that out at Wyoming. We must have the worst luck of any team out there. We suffered a lot of close games last year and the year before we had a lot of bad luck and the year before that we had to deal with the stabbing etc. This year we should have been one of the top teams and then the injuries pop up. These things are not caused by bad coaching, only bad luck. I still think if we can get some of these guys back on the field, we will be a good football team again.

Bad luck? We're a crappy team due to bad luck? What happened? Downing crash his car into a mirror store, after driving under a ladder?

I don't buy the bad luck excuse. Sure, we have had our share of misfortune, but every team does. Every college team deals with injuries, off field issues, player turnover etc.

Only winning one game a season is not bad luck.

Mass quantities of injuries always points to damn poor conditioning. Gleefully skipping off the field after being embarrassed points to lack of discipline, no other excuse.

Every coach is going to have ups and downs, and is not going to be able to win conference championships every year regardless of talent level...

O'Boyle I mentioned because he has taken teams deep into the playoffs in Division II while only working with two thirds the amount of scholarships that the opponents he faced, remember they destroyed MSU who had 63 full rides, and he only had 22 which were spread over his 100 man roster, hello?

You want to go after another coach that comes from a program that can spend a hundred fifty grand on gatoraide, or look for someone who can make lemonade out of lemons, hello again.

Looks to me like there is only room for one coach in division 1 who has bigger man boobs than the cheer squad, and his name is Mangino.

I feel the preparation and game planing has been horrible. Injuries, every football team has them. Ok so you lose a few starting guys, change the game plan up. Ok the O-line is young and inexperienced, change up something so you can get the best production out of them. But no you keep trying the same thing that doesn't work, it's like trying to make OJ with out the oranges.

Like I said before it really doesn't matter who we get, preferably a head coach, if not at least a O coordinator or D coordinator. Not a water boy like Downing.

When we look for a new coach (and I meant "when, not "if"), our no talent AD better use more of a criteria than "He worked at Nebraska". Did anyone even look at Downings resume?
I agree with a previous posting, the next guy needs to at least have been an OC or DC, if not the head dog. And, if he was the head guy and was fired, we need to look long and hard at why he was fired.

If we had recruited well, we should be able to get through a rash of injuries. 4 wins total in the last 4 years (so far) sould speak for itself. We have always started the first couple games strong with Downing and Co. but lost heart, motivation, the ability to overcome adversity, or whatever.

Remember our 2nd national championship run? Joe said at one of the Monday coaches lunches after we had won, that due to the amount of injuries the team had suffered, the coaches had wondered if a run in the playoffs could have been a negative (injury wise) for the next season because EVERYONE was injured and they were woried about too many possible career ending injuries! The team overcame the injuries and played with a lot of heart. Something that has been missing.

Jars mentioned Bill O'Boyle earlier. He would be a great head coach, but rumor has it that he would never leave Chadron. (I heard it from the town barber in Chadron)
I've got a great O'Boyle story if anyone ever wants to hear it.
