"Near Perfect"? Are you kidding me?

He still has a weak arm and relegates us to stupid swing passes and WR screens. Then we get behind and he throws the obligatory pick 6. He needs to lead this team to more than 9 first half points. I know there was a key fumble, but c'mon...

Yea I think MBT should start this week at Portland too now, I mean after reading all your post it makes complete sense. I mean really, 26-34 for 320 yards, who only completes 76% of there passes, that's pathetic, I mean I know there was 3 dropped balls because his arm is to weak to get the ball there, I mean 5 passes for over 20 yards, that's horrible arm strength, I mean if I was playing QB I would have easily been able to throw for at least 400 yards with guys in my face all night. I think we should Smith to a local JV high school team to sharpen his skills, maybe he can lead a team to vicotory there, 9 pts in te first half, your not gonna win any games like that, especially when football only plays 1 half to determine the score of a game. What was up that interception????? He should have thrown it righ through that guy that hit man, I mean. 6'4" 240lbs MBT could have thrown the ball through that guy, and I'm sure he could have held onto that ball when no one blocked the D-lineman. I think we should all march down to the AD's office and have Sperbeck and Smith benced.

Whow....You do not know much about percentages in single games and obviously have never been a QtrBack. Also it takes more than just a strong arm. You need footwork and the knowledge to make reads etc. We saw MBT's footwork last year. His scrambling ability has a lot to be desired. Jason has done well. Look at the media guide and past school records for a comparison. Also here is this years standings as of today. I say Smith is doing a fine job.

#1HornetFan, you would make a son proud. Jason is inconsistent and I think many are saying when is is having an off day, there are other QB's on this team. The defense is showing that it cannot shut down the opponents this year so the offense will need to produce every game and produce big. When this is NOT HAPPENING, then mix it up before the last 5 minutes of the game when the game is out of reach. Also, the game calling is done by the coach so all three QB's will be dealing with the same game plan and it seems to me that some of the defenses are reading it like a comic book.

The Defense (mainly the LBs) is the main problem with this team. I don't think there's any arguing that...

NewFan,

How many of those yards are garbage-time yards?

if you couldn't tell from the post I was being sarcastic, I think the kid is doing a good job, especially having to play from behind every week. But seeing as this kid cant catch a break, what does he have to do to be considered a good QB in your eyes?

It's cool, I wasn't being sarcastic in my response or anything either...

I want to see Smith make big throws when it counts. Not when we're down 35-9. I want to see him lead a receiver instead of throwing behind them or underthrowing a ball so a receiver has to break stride to come back to the ball...

You can tell Sperbeck doesn't trust him to make DI throws because at least half of his throws are screens or to RBs in the flats.

I want the 2008 Jason Smith back or at least for the 2009 MBT to be given a shot...

Kadeezy, well said. It would be nice to be in the game in the forth quarter, or even ahead.

Thanks...No kids for this Hornet yet...But sure having fun trying

#1. If you ever do have kids, you will make them proud. Keep on having fun. :D

understandable, but do you think that possibly Sperbeck is thinking ball control just to keep our defense off the field? They say a good defense is a good offense, and the more we hold the ball the less the defense is on the field, which right now is our weak point.

Also from what i remeber during the game, the 3 balls that smith threw down field were not short at all, 2 of them Brandyn Reed caught and one should have been a TD, not sure what the ref was looking at. You have to remember we dont have Tony Washington speed anymore, i mean that kid could run like the wind, maybe thats why we dont push the ball down the field as much, as for MBT starting, i think we should give Smith another chance, his play saturday wasn't bad at all.

Good points!

The following is from the Big Sky Conference Web site:

FIVE FOR 300: Five Big Sky quarterbacks threw for at least 300 yards last Saturday. Northern Arizona’s Michael Herrick led the way, throwing for a career-high 440 yards in the overtime loss to Montana. It was the third-best single-game performance in school history and most by a Lumberjack since 1997. It also set a Walkup Skydome mark for individual passing yards, breaking the 19-year old mark set by NAU’s John Bond of 424 set against Nicholls State in 1990. Travis Brown is the only QB in NAU history to throw for more yards in a game. He had 474 at Montana in 1996 and 452 against Weber Stat in 1997…Weber State’s Cameron Higgins threw for 410 yards in the 36-29 win over Portland State. It was the 13th 300-plus passing day of his career. Portland State’s Drew Hubel threw for 353 yards in the loss to Portland State. Montana’s Andrew Selle threw for a career-high 349 yards in the win over Montana. Sacramento State’s Jason Smith threw for a career-high 320 yards in a loss to Eastern Washington. Combined the five quarterbacks threw for 1,872 yards, 14 touchdowns and two interceptions, and completed 68 percent of their passes.

Jason was also nominated for :Big Sky Player of the Week" Again!

Go Hornets!

Bench Smith, He sucks!!!!!! 17-29 for 256 and 3TD's with no turnovers, put MBT in!

I still think MBT is the better candidate, even though Smith is showing improvement. A third year QB shouldnt need three games to get his bearings. It's one game, where was he the first three?! Some consistancy from him WOULD BE NICE!

You've missed the entire point of this thread...

Regardless, StungAlum is right. This is the first game he did something good when it counted, not when we were down 35-9. He played a great, mistake free game against PSU.

Both arguments are valid but realistically there will not be a change in QBs at this point until something bad happens, another bad start or an injury. I wanted MBT to come in during the 3rd qtr of the Poly game when Jason was really ineffective. That game may have been able to be saved at that point, we made Poly look a whole lot better than they are. The difference that I see in Jason is that he is starting to use his mobility again, something that was lacking in the Poly game and the first half of EWU. He looked good in the second half of EWU and at Portland State. His mobility is really what he brings to the table, except for the mobility MBT is the better pocket passer with a better arm. Just a guess maybe after his injuries last season he was having trouble rebuilding his confidence to scramble like he used to and was a little tentative. In my experience both as a athlete and a coach I have often seen that after an injury has healed there is sometimes a mental block that tries to prevent you from doing what you were injured doing. Sometimes it takes a period of time before you can make yourself go all out again, you just have to work through it, maybe Jason is finally getting to that point.

Am i missing something here? What does this kid have to do to keep his starting job, with respects to the poly and UNLV game he has played well. If you remember against EWU he had surpassed 300 yards 8 minutes into the 3rd quarter, they only threw the ball 3 times in the 4th, also they scored on 2 of there 4 possesions in the first half, one of them was a fumble by Wilkins on the 6 yard line so I dont know how much more points he could have put up. As for the PSU game, he managed the game well, no turnovers, and 3 TD'S, Im just not sure what else you expect from the guy, and he was missing Reed and Wilkins against PSU, Lane did a great job stepping up and playing a great game.

I like your analysis, it makes sense. And your take on the different qualities both QB's possess is spot on.

I think some people were frustrated with his play during the first three games, I know I was. Smith is in his third season now, he shouldnt need time to adjust like the JUCO's.

Smith is progressing, I think that if he keeps it up, you'll hear less criticism. :)

And, I guess I lost a lot of respect for Smith last season when one of his comments regarding the upcomming Montana game was published in the Bee. He was asked whether or not he knew the all-time record between the two schools, his reply was no. He had no idea that the team had never beaten Montana and was surprised to learn that Sac State was 0-14 against them. And this was in his second year with the team!

Respectfully,

StungAlum
